Reading the safety and handling information first helps you avoid the risk of personal injury, property loss, or accidental damage to your tablet. • Damage to a battery (such as cracks, dents, or creases), discharge from a battery, or a buildup of foreign substances on the battery. • A cracking, hissing, or popping sound, or strong odor that comes from the product. • Signs that liquid has been spilled or an object has fallen onto the tablet product, the power cord, or power adapter. • The product, power cord, or power adapter has been exposed to water. • The product has been dropped or damaged in any way.
limits the tablet's maximum wide band true RMS output voltage to 150 mV. To help protect against hearing loss, ensure that the headphones or earphones you use also comply with EN 50332-2 (Clause 7 limits) for a wide band characteristic voltage of 75 mV. Using headphones that do not comply with EN 50332-2 can be dangerous due to excessive sound pressure levels.
CAUTION: Hazardous moving parts. Keep fingers and other body parts away. Power cords and power adapters DANGER Use only the power cords and power adapters supplied by the product manufacturer. The power cords shall be safety approved. For Germany, it shall be H05VV-F, 3G, 0.75 mm2, or better. For other countries, the suitable types shall be used accordingly. Never wrap a power cord around a power adapter or other object. Doing so can stress the cord in ways that can cause the cord to fray, crack, or crimp.
Plugs and outlets DANGER If a receptacle (power outlet) that you intend to use with your tablet equipment appears to be damaged or corroded, do not use the outlet until it is replaced by a qualified electrician. Do not bend or modify the plug. If the plug is damaged, contact the manufacturer to obtain a replacement.
Electrical current safety information DANGER Electric current from power, telephone, and communication cables is hazardous. To avoid a shock hazard: • Do not use your tablet during a lightning storm. • Do not connect or disconnect any cables or perform installation, maintenance, or reconfiguration of this product during an electrical storm. • Connect all power cords to a properly wired and grounded electrical outlet. • Connect to properly wired outlets any equipment that will be attached to this product.
General battery notice DANGER Batteries supplied by Lenovo for use with your product have been tested for compatibility and should only be replaced with approved parts. A battery other than the one specified by Lenovo, or a disassembled or modified battery is not covered by the warranty. Battery abuse or mishandling can cause overheat, liquid leakage, or an explosion. To avoid possible injury, do the following: • Do not open, dissemble, or service any battery. • Do not crush or puncture the battery.
Lenovo is not responsible for the performance or safety of products not manufactured or approved by Lenovo. Keep your tablet and accessories away from small children: Your tablet contains small parts that can be a choking hazard to small children. Additionally, the glass screen can break or crack if dropped on or thrown against a hard surface.
Chapter 1. Meeting ThinkPad 10 Get an overview of the tablet, such as the connectors, indicators, features, specifications, and operating environment. In the box Your shipping box contains the following items. Depending on the model, your tablet might come with one or more of the accessories. If your tablet does not come with some of the accessories, you can purchase them from a Lenovo reseller or from the Lenovo Web site at: http://www.lenovo.

Chapter 2. Getting Started Learn the basics to get started with your ThinkPad tablet. Follow the instructions to set up your tablet, use the multi-touch screen, connect to a network, and put your tablet into proper power modes. Setting up your tablet When you use the tablet for the first time, do the following to complete the initial setup: 1. Connect your tablet to ac power (steps a to c as shown). 2. Press the power button to turn on the tablet. 3.
Zoom in Zoom out Put two fingers on the screen and move them farther apart to zoom in. Put two fingers on the screen and move them closer together to zoom out. Rotate Swipe in from the top edge to the bottom edge Put two or more fingers on an item, and then rotate your fingers clockwise or counterclockwise. Close the current full-screened app. Swipe in from the left edge Swipe in from the right edge For Windows 8.1: Switch back to a previous app. For Windows 8.
• Gently wipe the screen using a top-down motion. Do not apply any pressure on the screen. Connecting to a wireless network Connect your tablet to the Internet or other wireless networks so that you can browse on your tablet and share information. Your tablet supports the following wireless networks: • Wi-Fi network The Wi-Fi feature provides network access at distances of up to 100 meters (328 feet) depending on the Wi-Fi router and your surroundings.
To replace or install a micro SIM card: 1. Turn off the tablet. Insert a straightened paper clip into the hole of the micro-SIM-card tray. The micro-SIM-card tray ejects, then gently pull out the micro-SIM-card tray. 2. If a micro SIM card is installed in the tray, take out the micro SIM card. If no micro SIM card is installed in the tray, skip this step. 3. Install a new micro SIM card into the tray. Ensure that the new micro SIM card is installed in correct orientation. 4. Insert the tray into the tablet.
Power button and power settings If you will not use the tablet for a period of time, put the tablet into sleep mode or turn off the tablet to save power. You also can adjust the power settings to achieve the best balance between performance and power saving. Putting your tablet into sleep mode and waking up your tablet If you are not going to use the tablet for just a few minutes, put your tablet into sleep mode to lock it and save power.

Chapter 3. Using your tablet Learn the skills to make the best use of your tablet such as using Lenovo apps, connecting a near-field-communication (NFC) device, and using the fingerprint reader.
System Update This app enables you to keep the software up-to-date by downloading and installing software packages, including Lenovo apps, device drivers, and third-party apps. SHAREit SHAREit enables you to share files easily and rapidly across devices even without any Internet connection. WRITEit WRITEit gives you instant handwriting input wherever you need it. You can write directly in any app and text field, edit text in real time, see your full screen, and convert your handwriting into digital text.
Note: Settings might not be displayed in the Start menu. In this case, tap All apps to find Settings. 3. Follow the instructions on the screen to select a presentation scheme. Using Bluetooth devices Bluetooth is a short-range wireless communications technology. Use Bluetooth to establish a wireless connection between your tablet and another Bluetooth-enabled device within a distance of about 10 m (32.8 ft). To pair your tablet with a Bluetooth device: 1.
To pair your tablet with an NFC-enabled smartphone: 1. Align the smartphone with the extension line of the camera flash center as shown. Ensure that the smartphone screen is facing upward. 2. Move the smartphone within a 15 mm (0.6 inch) distance to the right of the extension line. Then hold the smartphone for seconds until you are prompted that the smartphone has been successfully detected.
To install a micro SD card: Hold the card with the metal contacts facing downward and pointing toward the tablet. Insert the card into the micro-SD-card reader until you hear a click. To remove the micro SD card: 1. Push the micro SD card inward a little until you hear a click. The micro SD card ejects. 2. Gently slide the card out of the card slot. Using a smart card Depending on the model, your tablet might come with a smart card reader.
To install a smart card: Attention: • Before handling the smart card, touch a metal table or a grounded metal object. Otherwise the card might get damaged by the static electricity from your body. • During the data transfer, do not put your tablet into sleep mode; otherwise, your data could get damaged. Hold the card with the metal contacts a facing downward and pointing toward the smart card reader. Insert the card into the smart card reader as shown. To enable the plug-and-play feature: 1.
Enrolling your fingerprints To enable fingerprint authentication, enroll your fingerprints first by doing the following: Note: It is recommended that you enroll more than one fingerprint in case of any injuries to your fingers. • For Windows 8.1: 1. Tap Settings ➙ Change PC settings ➙ Accounts ➙ Sign-in options. 2. Follow the instructions on the screen to enroll your fingerprint. • For Windows 10: 1. Open the Start menu , then tap Settings ➙ Accounts ➙ Sign-in options.
– The surface of the reader is dirty or stained. – The surface of the reader is wet. – The reader often fails to enroll or authenticate your fingerprint. Using passwords You can set a supervisor password to prevent your tablet from unauthorized use. Supervisor password protects the system information stored in ThinkPad Tablet Setup. Without the supervisor password, no one can change the configuration of the tablet.
• For Windows 10: Open the Start menu , then tap Get started in the right panel. To get comprehensive help content: • For Windows 8.1: Swipe in from the right edge of the screen to display the charms. Tap Settings ➙ Help. • For Windows 10: Search whatever you want to know in the Search box on the taskbar, or ask Cortana® personal assistant. Note: Cortana is your personal assistant for Windows. Cortana is available in some countries or regions. If your tablet is preinstalled with the Windows 8.
2. Tap the Airplane mode control to disable all wireless connections. • Be careful about the seat in front of you on the airplane. Place your tablet in a safe position so that it does not get caught when the person in front of you leans back. Tips on carrying tablet accessories Consider to take the following accessories when you are planning to travel.
Chapter 4. Accessories The following accessories are designed to enhance your experience with the tablet: • “ThinkPad Pen Pro and pen holder” on page 23 • “ThinkPad 10 Gen 2 Ultrabook Keyboard” on page 25 • “ThinkPad 10 Quickshot Cover” on page 26 Depending on the model, your tablet might not come with certain accessories. Installing a battery to power the pen Depending on the model, your pen might not be installed with a battery. To install an AAAA alkaline battery, do the following: 1. Unscrew the end cap. 2. Insert an AAAA alkaline battery into the battery compartment. 3. Reinstall the end cap. 4. Tighten the end cap. Using the pen holder to store the pen Your tablet might be shipped with a pen holder. Use the pen holder to store the pen on your tablet by doing the following: 1. Insert the pen holder into the USB 3.
ThinkPad 10 Gen 2 Ultrabook Keyboard Depending on the model, your tablet might come with a ThinkPad 10 Gen 2 Ultrabook Keyboard (referred to as the keyboard in this section). Attach the keyboard to your tablet so that you can transform your tablet into a portable notebook computer. This section introduces the basic use of the keyboard. For more information, refer to the documentation of the keyboard. Keyboard overview 1 Pen slot and pen-slot cover You can store the pen in the pen slot of the keyboard.
• Attach for carrying Attach the keyboard to your tablet as shown so that you can easily carry them around together. Note: This method only applies to tablet models that are not equipped with a smart card reader. ThinkPad 10 Quickshot Cover Depending on the model, your tablet might come with a ThinkPad 10 Quickshot Cover (referred to as the cover in this section). The cover is designed for ThinkPad 10 tablet models that are not equipped with a smart card reader.
Closing and opening the cover Closing the cover This action puts the tablet into sleep mode. Opening the cover This action wakes the tablet from sleep mode. Launching the camera The cover enables you to launch the rear camera in a quick way. You can launch the rear camera by just flipping over the magnetic tab of the cover as shown. Using the cover as a stand Fold the cover as shown so that it serves as a tablet stand. Chapter 4.

Chapter 5. Advanced configuration This chapter provides information about the advanced configuration and features. Installing device drivers The device drivers are available at http://www.lenovo.com/ThinkPadDrivers. Choose your tablet product name to view all the device drivers for your tablet. Attention: Always go to http://www.lenovo.com/ThinkPadDrivers for the latest device drivers. Do not download them from the Windows Update Web site.
You can update the UEFI BIOS and the ThinkPad Tablet Setup app by starting your tablet with a flash update application running in the Windows environment. When you add software, hardware, or a device driver, you can consider updating your UEFI BIOS for the new addition to work properly. To update your UEFI BIOS, go to: http://www.lenovo.com/ThinkPadDrivers System management This section is intended primarily for network administrators.
Chapter 6. Accessibility Lenovo helps users with disabilities to access information and technology easily. Some accessibility tools are available in the Windows operating system, and others can be purchased from third-party providers. This section gives a brief introduction to the available accessibility tools. For details about how to use the accessibility tools, refer to the Windows help information. See “Getting help about the Windows operating system” on page 20.
Magnifier Your tablet is equipped with the Microsoft Magnifier to help visually impaired people use the tablet more comfortably. Magnifier is a useful utility that enlarges part or all of your screen so that you can see the words and images better. Magnifier is part of the Ease of Access Center. To open Magnifier, type Magnifier into the search box. Zoom You can use the zoom feature to enlarge or reduce the size of text, pictures, maps, or other objects.
Chapter 7. Troubleshooting If your tablet encounters a problem, find a solution here. Frequently asked questions The problems and solutions described in this section are meant only as a guide. They are not definitive problem-solving techniques. If a problem persists, you can get support from Lenovo. For more information, see “Lenovo Customer Support Center” on page 40. Attention: When you observe a problem, stop operation immediately, because taking further action might result in data loss or damage.
Audio problem Poor audio quality or no sound output? Ensure that: • The speaker is not covered. • The speaker mute function is disabled. • If you are using a headset, unplug it, then plug it in again. • The volume is not turned to the lowest level. Failed to play a song, video, or other media file? Ensure that the media file is not corrupted.
• Message: 0183: Bad CRC of Security Settings in EFI Variable. Enter ThinkPad Tablet Setup. Solution: Checksum of the Security settings in the Extensible Firmware Interface (EFI) Variable is not correct. Enter ThinkPad Tablet Setup to check security settings, and restart the system. If you still encounter a problem, have the tablet serviced. • Message: 0187: EAIA data access error. Solution: The access to EEPROM is failed. Have the tablet serviced.
Attention: If you refresh your tablet, the apps that came with your tablet and the apps that you installed from Windows Store will be reinstalled, but all other apps will be removed. To refresh your tablet, do the following: 1. Swipe in from the right edge of the screen to display the charms. 2. Tap Settings ➙ Change PC settings ➙ Update and recovery ➙ Recovery. 3. In the Refresh your PC without affecting your files section, tap Get started. 4. Follow the instructions on the screen to refresh your tablet.
Creating and using a recovery USB drive You can create a recovery USB drive as a backup for the Windows recovery apps. With the recovery USB drive, you can troubleshoot and fix the problems even if the preinstalled Windows recovery apps are damaged. Creating a recovery USB drive The USB drive that you use to create the recovery USB drive should be at least 16 GB of storage. The actual USB capacity that is required depends on the size of the recovery image.
Windows recovery apps (Windows 10) The Windows recovery apps enable you to reset your computer or use advanced startup options. It is recommended that you create a recovery USB drive as early as possible. Store the recovery USB drive as a backup or replacement for the Windows recovery apps. For more information, see “Creating and using a recovery USB drive” on page 39. Resetting your computer If your tablet does not perform well, you might consider resetting your computer.

2. Open the ThinkPad Tablet Setup app. See “ThinkPad Tablet Setup app” on page 29. 3. Tap Startup. On the Boot submenu, drag USB CD/DVD or USB HDD to the top to make it the first startup device. 4. Tap Save, and then tap Yes to save your configuration. 5. Tap Restart and follow the on-screen instructions to restart the tablet. After the tablet restarts, the recovery app runs automatically. 6. Follow the on-screen instructions to reset your tablet to the factory default settings.
