General safety guidelines Always observe the following precautions to reduce the risk of injury and property damage. Service Do not attempt to service a product yourself unless instructed to do so by the Customer Support Center. Use only a service provider who is approved to repair your particular product. Note: Some parts can be upgraded or replaced by the customer. These parts are referred to as Customer Replaceable Units, or CRUs.
Extension cords and related devices Ensure that extension cords, surge protectors, uninterruptible power supplies, and power strips that you use are rated to handle the electrical requirements of the product. Never overload these devices. If power strips are used, the load should not exceed the power strip input rating. Consult an electrician for more information if you have questions about power loads, power requirements, and input ratings.

About the Super Multi-burner drive This manual provides information on registering, installing, and using the ThinkPad® Super Multi-burner Ultrabay™ Slim Drive, and is available on the Software and User’s Guide CD in the following languages: v Brazilian Portuguese v Czech v English v French v German v Italian v Japanese v Simplified Chinese v Slovak v Spanish v Traditional Chinese v Turkish The appendixes of this guide contain warranty information and legal notices.

Contact your place of purchase if an item is missing or damaged. Be sure to retain your proof of purchase. It might be required to receive warranty service. Direct-to-Disc (DLA) This software enables you to write directly to CD-RW, CD-R, DVD-RAM, DVD-RW, and DVD-R media using the drive letter like you would if you were writing to a diskette. All disc format types can be formatted by DLA. With DLA, you can drag-and-drop files, create new directories, or save files from any application directly to your Super Multi-burner. v Intervideo WinDVD This software enables you to play back DVD videos on your computer or to play video files from your hard disk drive.
This software enables you to install software for reading DVD-RAM, DVD-RW, and CD-RW media on computers with DVD drives. It also allows you to read DLA-created discs on systems without DLA installed. Note: Some graphics adapters such as the FIREGL, Intergraph, and 3dLabs, do not support DVD video playback.
Chapter 2. Using the Super Multi-burner drive This section provides information on how to handle, load, and care for DVDs and CDs and how to care for your Super Multi-burner drive. Before you begin For best results, review the following guidelines before using the drive: v Do not move your ThinkPad computer while formatting or writing a disc as this might cause data errors. Also, minimize typing while formatting or writing to a disc, as this might also cause data errors.
Loading a disc 1. Press the Eject button. The tray slides out of the drive. 2. Place a disc in the tray with the label facing up. 3. Close the tray by gently pushing the tray in until it latches. Attention: Do not use force or insert foreign objects to open the tray. If your tray does not open when you press the Eject button, see “Manually ejecting a disc” for more information.
v Always store discs away from direct heat sources. v Remove discs from the computer when not in use. v Check discs for cracks BEFORE each use. IMPORTANT: Do not use discs that are cracked. v Do not force discs into the computer or packaging. v Do not bend or flex discs. v Do not use commercial cleaners to clean discs. v v v v Do not write on the surface of discs. Handle discs by the edges or the center hole. Do not touch the surface of discs.
Using the tip of a ball point pen, push and break the lock pin tab 1 . To remove the disc, use a ball point pen to push down on the cartridge lid lock 2 and pull the cartridge lid out 3 . When the cartridge lid is open, the disc can be removed. Note: The cartridge lid lock and the cartridge lid tab are located on the side of some cartridges, as shown in 2a and 3a above. Attention: media.
Using CD-Rs and CD-RWs The Super Multi-burner drive can write to both CD-R and CD-RW discs. CD-R discs cannot be erased, but can be used with standard CD-ROM drives and CD players. You can use CD-R discs to record audio tracks, store data, archive files, and copy files from another CD. CD-RW discs can be erased and rewritten, but can be used only with newer CD-RW-compatible CD-ROM and DVD-ROM drives. You can use CD-RW discs to back up, store, and update files or to copy files from another CD. Notes: 1.
8. Click Go. The software you selected will install silently. 9. Reboot after the completion message. Note: if the software fails to install silently, you can select interactive installs of individual packages from the bottom line of the installer page. Using Intervideo WinDVD Creator With Intervideo WinDVD Creator, you can capture, edit, and record video and audio files. You can also use Intervideo WinDVD Creator to create and record DVD videos using your own video and audio files.
4. Windows 2000: You must install service pack 2 or higher, and DirectX. 5. Windows NT: You must install Service Pack 6 along with Internet Explorer 5, DirectX, and a third party IDE DMA driver. This configuration is not supported due to Microsoft not providing any official DirectX for Windows NT. Note: You can check which version of Windows 95 you are using by following these steps: 1. Click Start, move the cursor to Settings, and then click Control Panel. 2. Double-click System.
Enabling DMA This section explains enabling the DMA setting with Windows 2000 and Windows XP. For Windows 2000 1. 2. 3. 4. 5. 6. 7. 8. 9. 10. Click Start, move the cursor to Settings, and click Control Panel. Double-click System. Click the Hardware tab. Click the Device Manager button. Click IDE ATA/ATAPI controller to pull down the submenu. Double-click Secondary IDE. (Double-click Primary IDE if you are using the ThinkPad A21e computer.) Select the DMA is available as the Transfer Mode. Click OK.
Using Direct-to-disc (DLA) Direct-to-disc (DLA) is provided so that you can write data to DVD-RAM, DVD-RW, DVD-R, DVD+RW, DVD+R, CD-R, and CD-RW media. DVD-RAM, DVD-RW, DVD+RW, and CD-RW media can be written to many times, while DVD-R, DVD+R, and CD-R media can only be formatted and written to once. To format and write to DVD-RAM, DVD-RW, DVD-R, DVD+RW, DVD+R, CD-R, or CD-RW media: 1. 2. 3. 4. Insert a disc into the drive. Double-click My Computer. Right-click the Super Multi-burner drive letter.
To start Multimedia Center for Think Offerings in Windows Me or Windows 2000, select Start→Programs→ Multimedia Center for Think Offerings. To start Multimedia Center for Think Offerings in Windows XP, select Start->All Programs->Multimedia Center for Think Offerings-> Multimedia Center Home. When the Multimedia Center first starts, you are taken to a Quick Links page. This page show the four most used tasks for your convenience.
CDs. All other disc formats require GI images. Saved DVD images can be as large as 9GB, and CD images as large as 730MB. Ensure that you have adequate hard disk space before proceeding. Appendix A. Troubleshooting Computer problems can be caused by hardware, software, or user error. The information in this section might be useful to help you solve problems or to gather helpful information you can pass on to a service technician. You might also need to refer to your computer, operating-system, or sound-adapter publications. Review the following list for any problem descriptions that might fit your situation. You cannot create a multi-session disc.
