Networkingproblems
Thefollowingarethemostcommonnetworkingproblems.
Ethernetproblems
•Problem:Thecomputercannotconnecttothenetwork.
Solution:Makesurethat:
–TheEthernetextensionadapterisconnectedcorrectly.
ThenetworkcablemustbesecurelyconnectedbothtotheEthernetextensionadapterandtotheRJ45
connectorofthehub.Themaximumallowabledistancefromthecomputertohubis100meters.If
thecableisconnectedandthedistanceiswithinacceptablelimitsbuttheproblempersists,trya
differentcable.
–Youareusingthecorrectdevicedriver.Toinstallthecorrectdriver,dothefollowing:
1.OpenControlPanelandclickHardwareandSound➙DeviceManager.Ifyouarepromptedfor
anadministratorpasswordorconfirmation,typethepasswordorprovideconfirmation.
2.Iftheexclamationmark!isdisplayednexttotheadapternameunderNetworkadapters,you
mightnotbeusingthecorrectdriverorthedrivermighthavebeendisabled.Toupdatethedriver,
right-clickthehighlightedadapter.
3.ClickUpdateDriverSoftware,andthenfollowtheinstructionsonthescreen.
–Theswitchportandtheadapterhavethesameduplexsetting.
Ifyouconfiguredtheadapterforfullduplex,makesurethattheswitchportalsoisconfiguredforfull
duplex.Settingwrongduplexmodecandegradeperformance,causedataloss,orresultinlost
connections.
–Youhaveinstalledallnetworkingsoftwarethatisnecessaryforyournetworkenvironment.
CheckwithyourLANadministratorforthenecessarynetworkingsoftware.
•Problem:Theadapterstopsworkingfornoapparentreason.
Solution:Thenetworkdriverfilesmightbecorruptormissing.Updatethedriverbyreferringtothe
previoussolutionfortheproceduretomakesurethatthecorrectdevicedriverisinstalled.
•Problem:MycomputerisaGigabitEthernetmodelandIuseaspeedof1000Mbps,buttheconnection
failsorerrorsoccur.
Solution:
–UseCategory5wiringandmakesurethatthenetworkcableissecurelyconnected.
–Connecttoa1000BASE-Thub/switch(not1000BASE-X).
•Problem:TheWakeOnLANfeatureisnotworking.
Solution:EnsurethatWakeOnLANisenabledinThinkPadSetup.Ifitis,checkwithyourLAN
administratorforthenecessarysettings.
