Thislong-rangewirelessdatatransmissiontechnologybasedonthe802.16standardisexpectedtoprovide
theuseralastmilebroadbandconnectivitysimilartothatprovidedbycableorADSL,butwithouttheneed
tophysicallyconnectacabletothepersonalcomputer.
EstablishingwirelessLANconnections
Yourcomputercomeswithabuilt-inwirelessnetworkingcardandacongurationutilitytohelpyoumake
wirelessLANconnectionsandmonitorthestatusofyourconnection,sothatyoucanstayconnectedtoyour
networkwhileyouareintheofce,inameetingroom,orathome,withnoneedforawiredconnection.
Attention:
IfyoucarryyourcomputerwiththewirelessLANfeatureintoanairplane,checktheserviceswiththe
airlinebeforeboardingtheairplane.
Iftherearerestrictionsontheuseofcomputersonanairplanewiththewirelessfeature,youneedto
disableitbeforeboarding.Todisableit,refertotheinstructionsin“Enablingordisablingthewireless
feature”onpage36

TipsforusingthewirelessLANfeature
PlaceyourcomputersothatthereareasfewobstaclesaspossiblebetweenthewirelessLANaccess
pointandthecomputer.
ForthebestconnectionofthewirelessLANfeature,openyourcomputerdisplaytoanangleofslightly
morethan90degrees.
Ifyouusethewirelessfeature(the802.11standard)ofyourcomputersimultaneouslywithaBluetooth
option,datatransmissionspeedcanbedelayedandtheperformanceofthewirelessfeaturecanbe
degraded.
SettinguptheWirelessLANconnection
Tousethebuilt-inwirelessnetworkcard(the802.11standard)tocommunicate,starttheAccessConnections

Note:BeforeyoustartsettingupwirelessnetworkconnectionsbyusingtheAccessConnectionsprogram,
obtainaNetworkName(SSID)andyourencryptioninformationfromyournetworkadministrator.
EstablishingwirelessWANconnections
WirelessWideAreaNetwork(wirelessWAN)enablesyoutoestablishwirelessconnectionsoverremote
publicorprivatenetworks.Theseconnectionscanbemaintainedoveralargegeographicalarea,suchas
acityoranentirecountry,byuseofmultipleantennasitesorsatellitesystemsmaintainedbywireless
serviceproviders.
SomeThinkPadnotebookcomputerscomewithabuilt-inwirelessWANcardintegratingsomewireless
WANtechnologies,suchas1xEV-DO,HSPA,3G,GPRS,orLTE.YoucanconnecttotheInternetoryour
companynetworkwiththebuilt-inwirelessWANcardandthecongurationutilitytomakeawireless
WANconnectionandmonitoritsstatus.
