Introduction About your printer Your printer is available in five models: • Lexmark C752 (base model) – 1200 dots per inch (dpi) resolution – 128MB of standard memory – One 500-sheet tray – USB and parallel connectors 5-bin mailbox (see Page 12) or • Lexmark C752n (network model) – 128MB of standard memory – Ethernet 10BaseT/100BaseTx print server installed – USB and Ethernet connectors Output expander (see Page 10) • Lexmark C752dn (network, plus:) – Duplex unit • Lexmark C752dtn (network, plus:) – Du

If you purchased a finisher to go with your printer, refer to the documentation that came with the finisher for information about setting it up with the printer. Other sources of information If you need more information after you have completed setup, refer to the other printer documentation.
To print these pages: 1 On the operator panel, press Menu until you see Help Menu. 2 Press Menu until you see the topic you want to print, and then press Select. We strongly recommend that you print the Jam Clearance guide and keep it by the printer. These pages are also available on the publications CD that shipped with your printer.
Step 1: Unpack the printer Setting up a multifunction printer Note: More information is available on our Lexmark Web site at www.lexmark.com/multifunctionprinters. If you purchased a multifunction printer (MFP) that copies, faxes, and scans, refer to the documentation that came with the device to see if furniture or other hardware needs to be set up first. Unpacking 1 CAUTION: The printer weighs 47.7 kg (105 lb) and requires at least two people to lift it safely.
Note: Leave the printer in the box until you are ready to install it. Then have someone help you lift it using the handholds (see “Positioning the printer” on page 8). 2 Remove all items except the printer from the box.
Step 2: Set up the printer and paper handling options If you only purchased a base printer with no options, follow the directions under “Positioning the printer” on page 8. Note: Be sure to set up the items in the order listed in the table. Use the following table to locate the instructions you need to set up your printer and any paper handling options you may have purchased. Topic Go to page...
Installing a 2000-sheet drawer Your printer supports one optional 2000-sheet drawer. Warning: If you have an optional duplex unit and a 2000-sheet drawer, you must install a 500-sheet drawer between the duplex unit and the 2000-sheet drawer. 1 Unpack the 2000-sheet drawer and remove any packing material. 2 Place the drawer in the location you have chosen for your printer.
4 Adjust the four leveling feet on the bottom of the drawer, if necessary. 5 Continue with “Installing a 500-sheet drawer” on page 6 or “Positioning the printer” on page 8. Leveling feet Note: You will install the power cord for the 2000-sheet drawer later.
Installing a 500-sheet drawer Your printer supports up to three additional 500-sheet drawers. However, if you install a 2000-sheet drawer, you can only add one additional 500-sheet drawer. Warning: If you have an optional duplex unit and a 1 Unpack the 500-sheet drawer and remove any packing material.
Installing a duplex unit Your printer supports an optional duplex unit that lets you print on both sides of a sheet of paper. Warning: If you have an optional duplex unit and a 1 Unpack the duplex unit and remove any packing material. 2 Place the duplex unit in the location you have chosen for your printer or install it on a 500-sheet drawer: 2000-sheet drawer, you must install a 500-sheet drawer between the duplex unit and the 2000-sheet drawer.
Positioning the printer Once you have selected a location and set up any optional drawers or a duplex unit, you are ready to position the printer. 1 CAUTION: The printer weighs 47.7 kg (105 lb) and requires at least two people to lift it safely. Have someone help you lift the printer out of the box. Use the handholds on the front and rear of the printer.
2 Have someone help you place the printer in the location you have chosen. If you are installing the printer on an optional drawer or a duplex unit, align the positioning posts on the option with the holes in the printer. Make sure the printer is seated securely on the option. 3 Remove any tape or packing material from the outside of the printer. 4 If you purchased an output expander or mailbox, continue with this chapter. Otherwise, skip to Step 3: “Set up the print supplies” on page 14.
Installing an output expander Your printer supports an optional output expander that lets you stack up to 650 sheets of paper in one bin. Note: After you unpack the output expander, install it immediately. Otherwise, the edges of the mounting brackets could damage tabletops or fabrics. 1 Unpack the output expander and remove any packing material. 2 Remove the printer top cover. 3 Align the mounting brackets on the bottom of the output expander with the slots in the top of the printer.
5 Attach the printer top cover to the output expander. 6 Attach the output expander paper bail to the top cover. 7 Go to Step 3: “Set up the print supplies” on page 14.
Installing a 5-bin mailbox Your printer supports a 5-bin mailbox that lets you collate and stack up to 500 sheets of paper. Note: After you unpack the mailbox, install it immediately. Otherwise, the edges of the mounting brackets could damage tabletops or fabrics. 1 Unpack the mailbox and remove any packing material. 2 Remove the printer top cover. 3 Align the mounting brackets on the bottom of the mailbox with the slots in the top of the printer. 4 Lower the mailbox into place.
5 Attach the printer top cover to the mailbox. 6 Attach the mailbox paper bail to the top cover.
Step 3: Set up the print supplies Warning: Be sure to remove all packing materials or the printer may be damaged. Setting up the print cartridges Set up the print supplies 14 This step describes how to prepare the print cartridges and remove the packing materials inside the printer. 1 Open the printer front cover.
2 Remove the packing material on top of the cartridges. 3 Remove the print cartridges. For each cartridge: a Pull up slightly on the handhold. b Pull the cartridge straight out and use the handle to lift it off the guides. Handle c Set the cartridge on a hard, flat, clean surface in the upright position.
4 Detensioner Remove the packing material from the image transfer unit belt: a Grasp the detensioner located 1 2 on the right side on the inside of the machine. b Gently but firmly pull the 1 detensioner and the attached sheet up and out of the printer. Warning: Do not touch the image transfer unit belt with your fingers.
5 Reinstall the print cartridges. For each cartridge: a Rotate the cartridge in all directions to distribute the toner. b Turn the cartridge over so that the handle is on the bottom. Warning: Failure to remove the packing material from the print cartridges damages the printer. c Remove the plastic packing material from the photoconductor drum. Discard the packing material. d Turn the cartridge so that the handle is on the top.
Warning: Do not touch the photoconductor drum on the bottom of the print cartridge. e Holding the cartridge by the handle, rest the spokes on the cartridge on top of the guides inside the printer. Be sure to match the cartridge color with the colored label in the printer. f Slide the cartridge in as far as it will go. The cartridge lowers into place.
6 Close the front cover. Warning: If the front cover does not close completely, reopen the cover and press in firmly on the cartridges to make sure they are fully seated. Attaching an adhesive operator panel overlay Set up the print supplies 19 If English is not your preferred language and your printer shipped with an adhesive operator panel overlay, attach the overlay that has the appropriately translated button names: 1 Locate the adhesive overlay packaged with your printer.
Refer to the publications CD for instructions on changing the language of the text displayed on the operator panel.
Step 4: Install memory, firmware, or option cards If you do not have any memory, firmware, or option cards to install, skip this step and go to Step 5: “Load paper” on page 31. You can customize your printer memory capacity and connectivity by adding optional cards. CAUTION: If you are installing memory or option cards sometime after setting up the printer, turn the printer off and unplug the power cord before continuing.
Removing the system board access cover 1 Locate the access cover on the back of the printer. 2 Remove the four access cover screws (two at top, two at bottom). 3 4 Remove the access cover. Use the illustration on Page 23 to locate the connector for the card you want to install.

Installing a memory card Follow the instructions in this section to install a printer memory card. Memory cards must have 168-pin connectors. Note: Some memory options offered for other Lexmark printers cannot be used with your printer. Installing a hard disk Follow the instructions in this section to install an optional hard disk. You need a small Phillips screwdriver to attach the hard disk to the mounting plate. 7 Press the ribbon cable connector into the connector on the system board. 8 Flip the hard disk over, and then press the three posts on the mounting plate into the holes on the system board. The hard disk snaps into place.
Installing an option card Your printer has one expansion card slot that supports a number of option cards. The following table describes their function. Card Function MarkNet internal print server Adds an Ethernet or Token-Ring port so you can connect your printer to a network. Install a MarkNet™ N2501e or N2401e internal print server if you received either of these cards as part of a multifunction printer upgrade. Parallel 1284-B Interface Card Adds a parallel port.
4 Align the connector on the option card with the connector on the system board. The cable connectors on the side of the option card must fit through the connector slot. 5 Push the option card firmly into the option card connector. 6 Secure the card to the system board with the screw.
Replacing the system board access cover After you have finished installing cards on the printer system board, you must replace the system board access cover. 1 Align the slots at the top of the access cover with the screws near the top of the printer. 2 Slide the cover up under the top cover lip as far as it will go, and then tighten the screws at the top of the cover. 3 Insert and tighten the four screws to the bottom of the cover.
Step 5: Load paper Note: When loading specialty media such as transparencies or card stock, refer to the User’s Reference on the publications CD. Source Paper sizes supported The following table lists page numbers where you can find loading instructions for the standard and optional trays, as well as for the multipurpose feeder.
Loading the 500-sheet trays Follow these instructions to load any of the 500-sheet trays. Warning: Never remove paper trays while a print job is 1 Remove the tray. 2 Squeeze the front guide lever and slide the guide to the front of the tray. 3 Squeeze the side guide lever and slide the guide to the correct position for the size paper you are loading. printing. Note: Do not exceed the maximum stack height indicated on the front guide. Overfilling the tray may cause jams. 6 Squeeze the front guide lever and slide the guide until it firmly touches the stack of paper.
Loading the 2000-sheet tray Follow these instructions to load a 2000-sheet tray. Do not load any print media other than paper in the 2000-sheet tray. Load paper 34 1 Pull open the tray. 2 Squeeze the side guide lever, lift the guide, and place it into the appropriate slot for the size paper you are loading.
LT.LG 3 Squeeze the two front guide levers and slide the guide to the correct position for the size paper you are loading. 4 Slide the bottom support toward the front of the tray until it touches the front guide. 5 Flex the sheets back and forth to loosen them, and then fan them. LT.LG A5 EX B5 A4 A5 EX B5 A4 Do not fold or crease the paper. Straighten the edges of the stack on a level surface.
6 Place the paper against the back left corner of the tray, print side down. Do not load bent or wrinkled paper. 7 Close the tray. Make sure the tray is pushed completely into the printer. Note: Do not exceed the maximum stack height. Overfilling the tray may cause jams. Loading the multipurpose feeder Load paper 36 You can use the multipurpose feeder one of two ways: • Paper tray—As a paper tray, you can load paper in the feeder with the intention of leaving it in the feeder.
Follow these instructions to load the multipurpose feeder. 1 2 Open the multipurpose feeder. 3 Flex the sheets back and forth to loosen them, and then fan them. Squeeze the paper guide lever and slide the guide all the way toward the front of the printer. Do not fold or crease the paper or specialty media. Straighten the edges of the stack on a level surface.
4 Arrange the stack of paper or specialty media correctly for the size, type, and print method you are using. 5 Place the paper or specialty media, print side up, along the left side of the multipurpose feeder, and then push it in as far as it will easily go. Do not force the paper or specialty media. Note: Do not exceed the maximum stack height. Overfilling the feeder may cause jams. 6 Load paper 38 Squeeze the paper guide lever and slide the guide until it lightly touches the side of the stack.
Step 6: Attach cables and power cord CAUTION: Do not connect or disconnect a communication port, a teleport, or any other connector during a lightning storm. The printer can be attached to a network or directly to a computer to print locally. Attaching a local cable You can attach your printer locally using either a USB, parallel, or serial connection. USB A USB port is standard on all models.
2 Plug one end of the printer power cord into the socket at the back of the printer and the other end into a properly grounded outlet. If you installed an optional 2000-sheet drawer, plug the printer power jumper cord into the back of the drawer, and then plug the drawer’s cord into a properly grounded outlet. 3 Turn on your printer. After the printer completes its internal tests, the Ready message indicates that the printer is ready to receive jobs.
Parallel A parallel port is standard on the base model and is available on an option card for network models. See “Installing an option card” on page 28 for more information. If you install an optional Parallel Interface Card in any of the network models, you need a 1284 A-C parallel cable, such as Lexmark part number 11K4078 (6 ft). To attach the printer to a computer: Serial 1 2 Connect the printer to the computer using a parallel cable. 3 4 Turn on your printer.
Attaching a network cable You can attach your printer to a network using standard network cables. Ethernet A 10BaseT/100BaseTx Fast Ethernet port is standard on the network model. To attach the printer to a network: 1 2 Make sure the printer is turned off and unplugged. 3 Plug one end of the printer power cord into the socket at the back of the printer and the other end into a properly grounded outlet.
4 Turn on your printer. After the printer completes its internal tests, the Ready message indicates that the printer is ready to receive jobs. If you see a message other than Ready on the display, refer to the publications CD for instructions on clearing the message. Look for information about understanding printer messages. 5 6 Fiber optic Turn on your computer and any other peripherals. Continue with “Verify printer setup” on page 52. Fiber optic is a type of Ethernet, but uses different cables.
Step 7: Install drivers for local printing A local printer is a printer attached to your computer using a USB or parallel cable. If your printer is attached to a network instead of your computer, skip this step and go to Step 8: “Verify printer setup” on page 52. Note: For Windows operating systems, you can skip the hardware wizard and use the drivers CD to install your printer drivers. Launch the CD and follow the instructions to install printer software.
Windows In addition to the following driver installation instructions, you may need to refer to the documentation that shipped with your computer and your Windows software. Before you install Some versions of Windows software may already have a system printer driver for this printer included. This may mean that installation will seem automatic in later versions of Windows. System drivers work well for simple printing, but they contain less functionality than our enhanced custom driver.
Using Windows 2000 with USB or parallel cable Note: You need administrative access to install printer drivers on your computer. When the Found New Hardware Wizard screen appears: 1 Insert the drivers CD. If the CD auto launches, exit the CD. Click Next. 2 3 4 Select Search for a suitable driver, and then click Next. Select only Specify a location, and then click Next. Browse to the location of the printer driver on the drivers CD.
8 9 10 Using Windows 98 with a USB or parallel cable Note: Depending on the software and printers already installed on your computer, your screens may vary from those in the instructions. Click Yes (recommended), and then click Finish to print a test page. After the test page prints, click Yes to close the window. Click Finish to complete the installation and close the wizard. You are now ready to print. You must install both a USB port driver and an enhanced custom print driver.
Using Windows NT with a parallel cable Note: USB support is not available for Windows NT operating systems. Note: You need administrative access to install printer drivers on your computer. Using Windows 95 with a parallel cable The easiest way to install a driver is to use the drivers CD that shipped with your printer. 1 2 3 4 5 6 Insert the drivers CD. 7 Click Finish to complete the installation. You are now ready to print. Click Install Printer and Software. Click Printer.
Macintosh Creating a desktop printer icon (Macintosh 8.6–9.x) Macintosh OS 8.6 or later is required for USB printing. To print locally to a USB-attached printer, you must create a desktop printer icon (Macintosh 8.6–9.x) or create a queue in Print Center (Macintosh OS X). 1 Install a printer PostScript Printer Description (PPD) file on your computer. a Insert the drivers CD. b Double-click Classic, and then double-click the installer package for your printer.
Creating a queue in Print Center (Macintosh OS X) 9 Specify a printer name, and then click Save. Your printer is now saved as a desktop printer. 1 Install a printer PostScript Printer Description (PPD) file on your computer. a Insert the drivers CD. b Double-click Mac OS X, and then double-click the installer package for your printer.
UNIX/Linux Local printing is supported on many UNIX and Linux platforms, such as Sun Solaris and Red Hat. The Sun Solaris and Linux packages are available on the drivers CD and on our Lexmark Web site at www.lexmark.com. The User’s Guide in each package gives detailed instructions for installing and using Lexmark printers in UNIX and Linux environments. All the printer driver packages support local printing using a parallel connection.
Step 8: Verify printer setup Note: This is also a good time to print Quick Reference and Clearing Jams information. See “Printing Quick Reference information” on page 53. To verify printer setup, you should print the setup pages. Setup pages list all the options you purchased or installed. If a feature or an option is not listed, you may need to check your installation.
Printing a network setup page Note: If an optional MarkNet print server is installed, you see Print Net1 Setup on the display. If the printer is attached to a network, print a network setup page to verify the network connection. This page also provides important information that helps you configure for network printing. 1 2 3 Make sure the printer is on. 4 Check the first section on the network setup page and confirm that Status is “Connected.
Step 9: Configure for TCP/IP If you have TCP/IP available on your network, we recommend that you assign an IP address to the printer. Assigning a printer IP address Note: Instructions for other methods of setting the IP address are in the online documentation on the drivers CD that shipped with your printer. Launch the CD, click View Documentation Network Printer Install. If your network is using DHCP, an IP address is automatically assigned after you connect the network cable to the printer.
7 8 9 10 11 Press Menu until you see Set IP Netmask, and then press Select. Repeat step 6 to set the IP Netmask. Press Menu until you see Set IP Gateway, and then press Select. Repeat step 6 to set the IP Gateway. When you are finished, press Go to return the printer to the Ready state. Verifying the IP settings 1 Print another network setup page. Look under the “TCP/IP” heading and make sure the IP address, netmask, and gateway are what you expected.
Step 10: Install drivers for network printing After you have assigned and verified the TCP/IP settings, you are ready to install the printer on each network computer. Windows In Windows environments, network printers can be configured for direct printing or shared printing. Both network printing methods require the installation of a printer driver and the creation of a network printer port.
Follow the steps for your printing configuration and operating system to configure your network printer: Printing configuration Operating system Go to page... Direct Windows 95/98/Me, Windows NT 4.0, Windows 2000, Windows XP, or Windows Server 2003 57 Windows NT 4.0, Windows 2000, Windows XP, or Windows Server 2003 58 • Printer is connected directly to the network using a network cable, such as Ethernet. • Printer drivers are typically installed on each network computer.
Note: If you don’t know the IP address, print a network setup page and look under the TCP/IP heading. For help, see “Printing a network setup page” on page 53. Shared printing from a server using Windows NT 4.0, Windows 2000, Windows XP, and Windows Server 2003 Server Printer Clients b Enter the IP address in the text box. c Click Add Port. 10 11 Click Done until you return to the Method of Connection screen. 12 13 Click Finish to complete the installation.
Note: If you are missing files, you may be prompted to provide the server operating system CD. 5 In the Alternate Drivers section, select the operating systems of all the network clients that will print to the printer. 6 7 Click OK. Check the following to make sure the printer was successfully shared. • • The printer object in the Printers folder now has a shared indicator. For example, in Windows NT 4.0, a hand appears under the printer object. Browse Network Neighborhood.
3 4 Click Network Print Server. Select the network printer from the Shared printers list. If the printer is not listed, enter the path of the printer in the text box. The path will look similar to the following: \\\ Note: If this is a new printer, you may be prompted to install a printer driver. If no system driver is available, then you will need to provide a path to available drivers.
Mac OS 8.6 to 9.x Note: Installing the custom PPD is required only if this is the first time the printer has been set up. If the printer was previously installed, go on to “Step 2: Create a desktop printer” on page 61. Step 1: Install a custom PPD file 1 2 3 4 Insert the drivers CD into your CD-ROM drive. 5 Click Install to install the PPD file for your printer. Double-click Classic. Double-click the Lexmark Installer icon. Select the language of your operating system, and then click OK.
Mac OS X version 10.1.2 and later Step 1: Install a custom PPD file 1 2 Insert the drivers CD into your CD-ROM drive. Click Mac OS X . For example, Mac OS X 3 English. Double-click the installer icon for your printer to run the installer. Step 2: Create a print queue in Print Center Note: If you don’t know which printer to select, look on the Network Setup page under the AppleTalk heading to find the default name of the printer.
UNIX/Linux Your printer supports many UNIX and Linux platforms, such as Sun Solaris and Red Hat. Visit our Lexmark Web site at www.lexmark.com for a complete list of supported UNIX and Linux platforms. Note: The Sun Solaris and Linux packages are available on the drivers CD and on our Lexmark Web site at www.lexmark.com. Lexmark provides a printer driver package for each supported UNIX and Linux platform.
Step 11: Using the publications CD Viewing and using the CD contents The User’s Reference includes helpful information about using your printer and solving common printing problems. Copies of the Setup Guide and Quick Reference information are also on the CD. Note: The publications CD is shipped inside the Setup Guide. We recommend that you print the quick reference and clearing jams information and store it near the printer for easy access when needed.
