Other sources of information Publications CD The publications CD provides information about loading paper, clearing error messages, ordering and replacing supplies, installing maintenance kits, and troubleshooting. It also provides general information for administrators. The information on the CD is also available on the Lexmark Web site at www.lexmark.com/publications.
Step 1: Unpack your printer CAUTION: The base printer weighs 80.5 kg (177 Ib) and requires at least four people to lift it safely. Anytime you move or lift the printer make sure you have enough people to help you. Use the handholds on the side of the printer when lifting. Note: Leave the printer in the box until you are ready to place it into position. 1 9 8 7 Remove all items from the box except the printer.
Step 2: Select a location for your printer Choosing the correct location for your new Lexmark C912 printer is vital to ensuring the printer provides you with the quality of service you expect. Considering environmental issues Note: Adequate ventilation is important if you expect to print high volumes of materials or print continuously.
When selecting a location for the base model, make sure you have at least the amount of space indicated in the figure. 740.6 mm (29.1 in.) 127 mm (5 in.) 152.1 mm (6 in.) 1498.6 mm (59 in.) 660.4 mm (26 in.) 330.2 mm (13 in.) 1181.1 mm (46.5 in.) Space and clearance requirements change depending on the printer model. See the table below for the requirements for your model.
Step 3: Set up the printer and paper handling options If you only purchased a base printer with no options, follow the directions under “Positioning the printer” on page 6. Note: Be sure to set up the items in the order listed in the table. Use the following table to locate the setup instructions for your printer and any paper handling options you may have purchased. Installing the printer base or cabinet You can purchase an optional printer cabinet or printer base. To install the printer cabinet or printer base: 1 Remove the cabinet or base from the box. 2 Remove all packing material. 3 Follow the instructions that came with the option to assemble or prepare the cabinet or base for installation. 4 Place the cabinet or base in the location you have chosen for your printer.
3 If you have additional 550-sheet drawers: a Align the positioning posts on the lower drawer with the holes in the 550-sheet drawer. b Lower the 550-sheet drawer into place. Seat it securely on the other drawer. c Repeat steps a and b for each additional drawer. Positioning the printer You are ready to position the printer. CAUTION: The base printer weighs 80.5 kg (177 Ib) and requires at least four people to lift it safely. 1 Have three other people help you lift the printer.
2 Have three other people help you place the printer in the chosen location. If you are installing the printer on a 550-sheet drawer, align the positioning posts on the drawer with the holes in the printer. Seat the printer securely on the drawer. 3 Remove any tape or packing material. Installing an optional heavy media tray Your printer supports an optional heavy media tray.
Installing an optional duplex unit Note: Refer to the publications CD for information about the types and sizes of paper the duplex unit supports. Your printer supports an optional duplex unit that provides two-sided printing. 1 Remove the duplex unit from its packing material. 2 Remove any shipping tape and additional packing material. 3 Open the duplex unit access door on the left side of the printer.
4 Align the duplex unit with the slots in the printer. 5 Slide in the duplex unit. 6 Align the thumbscrews on the duplex unit with the holes in the printer. 7 8 Tighten the thumbscrews. Close the duplex unit door.
Installing an optional high capacity feeder Your printer supports an optional high capacity feeder. You can load up to 3,000 sheets of letter or A4 size paper in the high capacity feeder. Note: You must have an optional printer cabinet with one Remove and unpack all items from the box. Make sure you have the following items: optional drawer or an optional printer stand with three optional drawers in order to install a high capacity feeder.
Attaching the docking frame 1 Remove the two side covers from the top 550-sheet drawer. You may need to use a small flathead screwdriver to pry the covers up and outward. 2 Insert two screws through the top screw holes of the docking frame as shown. 3 Use the wrench to tighten the screws. 4 Insert two screws through the bottom screw holes of the docking frame as shown. 5 Tighten the screws. 6 Place the wrench in the holder on the high capacity feeder.
1 Align the two holes on guide rail Attaching the guide rail and feeder with the studs on the docking frame. 2 Slide the guide rail down until it is fully seated on the docking rail and flat against the floor. 3 Place the high capacity feeder on the guide rail. Note: Make sure all four casters are on the guide rail.
4 Roll the high capacity feeder toward the printer and check the alignment of the pins with the holes in the docking frame. If the pins do not align with the holes in the docking frame, see “Installing height adjustment spacers” on page 15. 5 Roll the high capacity feeder toward the printer until the feeder locks to the docking frame. You hear a click when the feeder locks into the correct position. 6 Attach the interface cable to the back of the printer and tighten the thumbscrews.
7 Attach the interface cable to the rear of the high capacity feeder and tighten the thumbscrews. 8 Insert the point on the cable holder into the hole on the back of the top optional drawer. 9 Place the high capacity feeder cable into the holder. 10 Close the cable holder.
Installing height adjustment spacers If the pins on the high capacity feeder do not align with the holes in the docking frame, adjust the height of the feeder. You can either remove the factory installed spacer or add two spacers between each caster and the bottom of the high capacity feeder. Use the following steps to add or remove spacers. 1 Determine the height difference between high capacity feeder alignment pins and the docking frame.
To remove the factory installed spacer: a Remove the spacer from the top of the caster. b Insert the four screws through the caster. c Align and insert the screws into the screw holes on the high capacity feeder. 5 Tighten the four screws to secure the caster. 6 Repeat steps 3 through 5 to add or remove spacers on the remaining three casters. 7 Return to step 5 on page 13.
Step 4: Install printer supplies Opening the top cover To access the Lexmark C912 printer supplies: 1 Remove any shipping tape and packing material. 2 Open the front door. 3 Rotate the top cover locking lever to the left.
Note: The top cover opens very quickly; keep both hands on the top cover when opening. 4 Place both hands on the lifting points and squeeze the right top cover latch. 5 Lift the top cover until it stops.
6 Remove the shipping strap that holds the cover: a Push down slightly on the cover. Shipping strap b Twist the top part of the strap slightly to pull it down and toward the front of the printer until it is free of the cover.
c Remove the bottom part of the strap from the printer. 7 Remove any shipping tape and yellow packing material from inside the printer. Installing the fuser oil coating roll 1 Remove the coating roll from its packaging. CAUTION: Do not touch the coating roll. Only touch the coating roll’s outside housing.
2 Slide the coating roll into the fuser by pushing it firmly all the way back until it clicks into place. Make sure the coating roll drops down into position. It clicks into place with no gap between it and the fuser.
Installing the photodevelopers Your printer ships with four color-coded photodevelopers which you must place inside the top cover. Each photodeveloper has its own color-coded position. Warning: Do not touch, drop, or place anything on the transfer belt. Touching the surface of the transfer belt or placing items on it may damage it. 1 Transfer belt Lift and remove the four shipping spacers from the transfer belt. 2 Remove any shipping tape and packing material.
5 Align the photodeveloper with the slot in the printer. A label above each slot indicates which color photodeveloper should be installed. 6 While holding the photodeveloper with your left hand and the photodeveloper cover with your right hand, slide the photodeveloper in until the unit is fully seated. As the photodeveloper slides in, remove its cover. 7 Repeat steps 3 through 6 to install the remaining photodevelopers.
Installing the toner cartridges Your printer ships with four color-coded starter toner cartridges. Starter toner cartridges have a yield of up to 8,0001 pages. Note: Use a brush or cold water to remove any toner that Install the toner cartridges inside the top cover of the printer. Each cartridge has its own color-coded position as indicated by a label to the left of each slot. has soiled clothing. 1 Remove one of the toner cartridges from its packing material.
3 Remove the shipping tape and any additional packing material. 4 Align the toner cartridge with its slot in the printer. The toner cartridge is placed to the right of the corresponding colored label.
5 Slide the toner cartridge in until the cartridge is fully seated. 6 Push the waste toner arm onto the photodeveloper until it snaps into place. 7 Repeat steps 2 through 6 to install the remaining toner cartridges.
Attaching an adhesive operator panel overlay If English is not your preferred language, attach the overlay that has the appropriately translated button names: 1 Locate the adhesive overlay packaged with your printer. 2 Peel the backing off the overlay. 3 Align the holes in the overlay with the buttons on the operator panel, and then press it into place. 4 Peel the covering away from the overlay.
3 Lifting points Top cover lever Rotate the top cover locking lever to the right. If you cannot rotate the locking lever, the cover is not fully closed. a Place both hands on the lifting points and squeeze the right top cover latch. b Lift the top cover. c Press down firmly until the top cover clicks into place. 4 Install printer supplies 28 Close the front door.
Step 5: Install memory and option cards If you did not purchase any memory, firmware, or option cards, skip this step and go to “Step 6: Load paper” on page 38. CAUTION: If you are installing memory or option cards after initial printer setup, turn the printer off and unplug the power cord. If you have any other devices connected to the printer, turn them off as well and unplug any cables going to the printer.
1 Loosen the eight screws on the system board cover. Do not remove the screws completely. Screws Screws 2 Slide the cover up and away from the printer.

Installing a memory card Complete the following instructions to install either a printer memory card or a flash memory card. Memory cards must have 168-pin connectors. Note: Memory options designed for other Lexmark The system board has three connectors for optional memory cards. You can install any combination of printer memory and flash memory cards in the connectors. However, the printer only recognizes one flash memory card at a time. printers may not work with your printer.
Installing a firmware card If an option card has been installed, you need to remove the option card before installing the firmware card. 1 Remove the system board access Note: Firmware cards designed for other Lexmark printers may not work with your printer. cover (see page 29). Warning: Firmware cards are easily damaged by static electricity. Touch something metal, such as the printer frame, before you touch a card. 2 Alignment pins Unpack the firmware card.
Installing a hard disk Warning: Hard disks are easily damaged by static electricity and physical shock (such as dropping). Touch something metal, such as the printer frame, before you touch the hard disk. If an option card has been installed, you may have to remove the option card before installing the hard disk. 1 Remove the system board access cover (see page 29). 2 Align and press the ribbon cable connector into the connector on the system board.
Installing an option card Your printer has one expansion card slot that supports a number of option cards. The following table describes their function. Card Function MarkNet™ internal print server Adds an Ethernet, Token-Ring, or Fiber port to connect your printer to a network. Install a MarkNet N2501e or N2401e internal print server if you received either of these cards as part of a multifunction printer upgrade.
4 Align the connector on the option card with the connector on the system board. The cable connectors on the side of the option card must fit through the connector slot. 5 Push the option card firmly into the option card connector. 6 Secure the card to the system board with the screws.
Reinstalling the system board access cover After you finish installing cards on the printer system board, reinstall the system board access cover. 1 Align the holes on the access cover with the screws on the printer. Screw slot 2 Place the cover against the printer and slide it down. 3 Install memory and option cards 37 Tighten the eight screws.
Step 6: Load paper Note: Use recommended media (paper, envelopes, transparencies, card stock, and labels) for your printer to avoid printing problems. For detailed information about media characteristics, refer to the Card Stock & Label Guide located on our Lexmark Web site at www.lexmark.com. The following table lists page numbers where you can find loading instructions for the standard and optional trays, as well as for the multipurpose feeder.
Your printer supports a wide variety of paper types, sizes, and weights. The standard tray (tray 1) and optional trays 2, 3, and 4 are marked with stack height letters A, B, and C. The optional heavy media tray is marked with stack height letters D, E, and F. The following table lists recommended media, weights, and the stack height guide to use when loading the paper trays.
Loading the paper trays Each paper tray holds 550 sheets of paper. Note: If you have an optional heavy media paper tray, Follow these instructions to load paper in all the paper trays. make sure you review the heavy media tray section in the table on page 38 and follow the heavy media tray instructions on page 44. 1 Pull the paper tray out until it stops. 2 Press the metal plate down until it locks.
3 Squeeze the left guide and slide it to the position for the size of paper you are loading. 4 Release the paper guide. Note: The position of the left paper guide tells the printer the size of the paper in the tray. If the left paper guide is in the wrong position, you may experience paper feeding problems or incorrect page formatting. 5 Flex the sheets back and forth to loosen them, and then fan them. Do not fold or crease the paper. Straighten the edges of the stack on a level surface.
6 Place the paper in the tray, print side down. Note: Do not exceed the maximum stack height for the size and weight media you are using (see page 39). Overfilling the tray may cause jams. 7 Squeeze the front paper guide lever and slide the guide until it lightly touches the stack of paper.
8 Rotate the paper size dial until the size of the paper in the tray is indicated. 9 Push the tray completely in the printer.
Using the heavy media tray The optional heavy media tray replaces tray 1. The heavy media tray is specially designed for use with heavier plain paper, transparencies, and labels. For instructions on installing the heavy media tray, refer to your publications CD. Note: Using the heavy media tray with lighter weight When the heavy media tray is installed, it turns the auto size sensing off. You must set the operator panel to the size and type of media you have placed in the tray.
8 Tray 1 Type Press Menu until you see Tray 1 Type, and then press Select. 9 Press Menu until you see Custom Custom Type 1 1 Menu 2 Select 3 Type 1, and then press Select. Return 4 10 Press Return once. 11 Press Menu until you see Custom Types, and then press Select. Go 5 12 Press Menu until you see Custom Stop 6 Type 1, and then press Select. 13 Press Menu until you see the type of media you loaded in the heavy media tray, and then press Select. 14 Press Go. Ready is displayed.
To load the multipurpose feeder: 1 Open the multipurpose feeder. 2 Slide the paper guides to the correct position for the size of paper you are loading. Note: The guides are interconnected. When you move one, they both move together. 3 Press the paper feed plate down until it locks into place. 4 Flex the sheets back and forth to loosen them, and then fan them. Do not fold or crease the paper. Straighten the edges of the stack on a level surface.
5 Place the paper print side up between the paper guides. Note: Do not exceed the maximum stack height. Overfilling the feeder may cause jams. 6 Move the SET button to the left to unlock the tray. The multipurpose tray can be closed by lifting it. However, it must be locked down before closing.
Loading the high capacity feeder The optional high capacity feeder provides an additional input of 3,000 sheets of paper. Note: Do not load any print media other than paper in the high capacity feeder. To load the high capacity feeder: 1 Open the top cover. The paper guides are set at the factory and may already be configured for your paper size. 2 Inspect the position of the paper guides. If the paper guides are correctly set for the size of paper you are loading, go to step 6 on page 49.
4 Slide the guides left or right to the correct position for the paper size you are loading (A4 or Letter). 5 Tighten the left and right paper guide thumbscrews. 6 Flex the sheets back and forth to loosen them, and then fan them. Do not fold or crease the paper. Straighten the edges of the stack on a level surface. 7 Place the paper against the paper guides with the print side up. Note: Do not exceed the maximum stack height. Overfilling the tray may cause paper jams.
8 Press the paper tray button. The paper tray lowers so you can load another 500 sheets of paper. Note: If there is only a partial stack of paper in the tray, the paper low sensor will not allow the tray to go down. Add more paper to lower the tray. 9 Place the paper against the paper guides, with the print side up. 10 Repeat step 8 and step 9 until you have filled the tray or loaded the desired quantity. 11 Close the top cover.
Step 7: Attach cables CAUTION: Do not connect or disconnect a communication port, a teleport, or any other connector during a lightning storm. You can attach the printer to a network or directly to a computer to print locally. Attaching a local cable Attach your printer locally using either a USB port or a parallel port. USB A USB port is standard on all Lexmark C912 printer models. Windows 98 SE, Windows Me, Windows 2000, and Windows XP operating systems support USB connections.
Parallel A parallel port is standard on the base model. To attach the printer to a computer: 1 Connect the printer to the computer using a parallel cable. A base machine’s parallel port requires a 1284 A-B parallel cable such as Lexmark part number 1329605 (3.05 m [10 ft]) or part number 1427498 (6.1 m [20 ft]). A parallel port on an RS-232C Serial/Parallel 1284-C Interface Card requires a 1284 A-C parallel cable, such as Lexmark part number 11K4078 (1.83 m [6 ft]).
Turning on the printer 1 Plug one end of the power cord into the socket on the side of the printer and the other end into a properly grounded outlet. 2 If you installed an optional high capacity feeder, plug one end of the high capacity feeder power cord into the socket on the side of the high capacity feeder and the other end into a properly grounded outlet. 3 Turn on your printer. • If the printer is attached locally, leave the computer and any other attached devices turned off.
Step 8: Install drivers for local printing A local printer is a printer attached to your computer using a USB or parallel cable. If your printer is attached to a network instead of your computer, skip this step and go to “Step 9: Verify printer setup” on page 64. Note: For Windows operating systems, you can skip the hardware wizard and use the drivers CD to install your printer drivers. Launch the CD and follow the instructions to install printer software.
Windows In addition to the following driver installation instructions, you may need to refer to the documentation that shipped with your computer and your Windows software. Before you install Some versions of Windows software may already have a system printer driver for this printer included. Installation may seem automatic in later versions of Windows. System drivers work well for simple printing, but they contain less functionality than our enhanced custom driver.
Using Windows 2000 with USB or parallel cable Note: You need administrative access to install printer drivers on your computer. When the Found New Hardware Wizard screen appears: 1 Insert the drivers CD. If the CD auto launches, exit the CD. Click Next. 2 3 4 Select Search for a suitable driver, and click Next. Select only Specify a location, and click Next. Browse to the location of the printer driver on the drivers CD. D:\Drivers\Win_2000\ 5 Click Open, and then click OK.
5 Select your printer and driver from the list, and then click OK. Make sure you select the driver in the correct language you want to use. D:\Drivers\WIN_9X\ 6 After the printer driver is installed, click Finish. 7 Use the default printer name or type a unique name for your printer, and then click Next. 8 Click Yes (recommended), and then click Finish to print a test page. 9 After the test page prints, click Yes to close the window.
11 Select Yes to print a test page, and then click Finish. All the necessary files are installed on your computer. 12 After the test page prints, click Yes to close the message window. 13 Click Finish to complete the installation. You are now ready to print. Using Windows NT with a parallel cable The easiest way to install a driver is to use the drivers CD that shipped with your printer. available for Windows NT operating systems.
Macintosh Creating a desktop printer icon (Macintosh 8.6–9.x) Macintosh OS 8.6 or later is required for USB printing. To print locally to a USB-attached printer, you must create a desktop printer icon (Macintosh 8.6–9.x) or create a queue in Print Center (Macintosh OS X). 1 Install a printer PostScript Printer Description (PPD) file on your computer. a Insert the drivers CD. b Double-click Classic, and then double-click the installer package for your printer.
9 Specify a printer name, and then click Save. Your printer is now saved as a desktop printer. Creating a queue in Print Center (Macintosh OS X) 1 Install a printer PostScript Printer Description (PPD) file on your computer. a Insert the drivers CD. b Double-click Mac OS X, and then double-click the installer package for your printer.
The Sun Solaris and Linux packages are available on the drivers CD and on our Lexmark Web site at www.lexmark.com. The User’s Guide in each package gives detailed instructions for installing and using Lexmark printers in UNIX and Linux environments. All the printer driver packages support local printing using a parallel connection. The driver package for Sun Solaris supports USB connections to Sun Ray appliances and Sun workstations. Visit the Lexmark Web site at www.lexmark.
6 Press Return to exit the menus when finished. 7 Print a Menu Settings page and verify that your serial parameters are correct. Keep this page for later use. a Press Menu until you see Utilities, and then press Select. b Press Menu until you see Print Menus, and then press Select. c Look under the Standard Serial (or Serial Option X if you installed a serial interface card) heading to find the serial parameters.
3 Select the communications port you assigned to the printer (COM1 or COM2). 4 Click Properties. 5 On the Port Settings tab, set the serial parameters to the exact same serial parameters in the printer. Look for the printer settings under the Serial Standard (or Serial Option X) heading on the Menu Settings page you printed earlier. 6 7 Click OK, and then close all the windows. Print a test page to verify printer installation. a Click Start Settings Printers.
Step 9: Verify printer setup Printing a menu settings page Note: For more information about using the printer operator panel and changing menu settings, refer to the publications CD. Print a menu settings page to review the default printer settings and to verify that printer options are installed correctly. 1 Make sure the printer is on. 2 Press Menu until you see UTILITIES MENU, and then press Select. 3 Press Menu until you see Print Menus, and then press Select to print the page.
3 Press Menu until you see Print Net Setup, and then press Select. The network setup page prints and the printer returns to Ready status. UTILITIES MENU 4 Check the first section on the network setup page and confirm 1 Menu 2 Select 3 Go 5 that Status is “Connected.” Return 4 If Status is “Not Connected,” your LAN drop may not be active or your network cable may be malfunctioning.
Step 10: Configure for TCP/IP If you have TCP/IP available on your network, we recommend that you assign an IP address to the printer. Assigning a printer IP address If your network is using DHCP, an IP address is automatically assigned after you connect the network cable to the printer. 1 Look for the address under the “TCP/IP” heading on the network setup page you printed in “Printing a network setup page” on page 64. 2 Go to “Verifying the IP settings” on page 67 and begin with step 2.
6 Change the address by pressing Menu to increase or decrease each number. Press Select to move to the next segment. Press Select when you are finished. The message Saved appears briefly. 7 Press Menu until you see Set IP Netmask, and then press Select. 8 Repeat step 6 to set the IP Netmask. 9 Press Menu until you see Set IP Gateway, and then press Select. 10 Repeat step 6 to set the IP Gateway. 11 When you are finished, press Go to return the printer to the Ready state.
Step 11: Install drivers for network printing After you have assigned and verified the TCP/IP settings, you are ready to install the printer on each network computer. Windows In Windows environments, network printers can be configured for direct printing or shared printing. • Direct printing means the printer is attached directly to the network using an available LAN connection or open port on a hub. In this type of network printing, printer drivers are typically installed on each network computer.
Supported network printer ports • Microsoft IP port—Windows NT 4.0, Windows 2000, and Windows XP • Lexmark network port—Windows 95/98/Me, Windows NT 4.0, Windows 2000, and Windows XP Supported printer drivers • • Windows system printer driver Lexmark custom printer driver System drivers are built into Windows operating systems. NetWare Lexmark provides a printer driver package for each supported UNIX and Linux platform. The User’s Guide in each package gives detailed instructions for installing and using Lexmark printers in UNIX and Linux environments. You can download these packages from our Lexmark Web site. You may also find the driver package you need on the drivers CD.
Step 12: Using the publications CD Viewing and using the CD contents The User’s Reference includes helpful information about using your printer and solving common printing problems. Copies of the Setup Guide, the Quick Reference sheet, and the Clearing Jams sheet are also on the CD. The publications CD is shipped inside the Setup Guide.
