Getting Started Installing the USIM and battery 2 Remove the battery 1 Remove the battery cover Press and hold down the battery release button and lift off the battery cover. Hold the top edge of the battery and lift the battery from the battery compartment by using the battery cover. WARNING! Do not use your fingernail when removing the battery. WARNING! Do not remove the battery when the phone is switched on, as this may damage the phone.
3 Install the USIM card Slide the USIM card into the USIM card holder. Make sure that the gold contact area on the card is facing downwards. To remove the USIM card, pull it gently in the reverse direction. TIP! The metal contact of the USIM card can be easily damaged by scratches. Pay special attention to the USIM card while handling. Follow the instructions supplied with the USIM card. 4 Install the battery Insert the top of the battery fi rst into the top edge of the battery compartment.
Getting Started CAUTION! • Do not force the connector as this may damage the phone and/or the charger. 5 Charging your phone Slide back the cover of the charger socket on the side of your KU990i. Insert the charger and plug into a mains electricity socket. Your KU990i will need to be charged until a message reading Fully Charged appears on screen. • If you use the charger out of your own country, use an attachment plug adaptor for the proper configuration.
Memory card TIP! Installing a memory card • The memory card must be removed or inserted only when necessary as its removal/insertion may lead to failure. Expand the memory space available on your phone using a memory card. The KU990i will support up to a 2GB memory card. TIP! Memory card is an optional accessory. 1 Remove the battery and battery cover as before. 2 Insert memory card. Slide the memory card into the slot at the top, until it clicks into place.
Getting Started • It is recommended the card be initialised within the mobile phone. The memory card includes some system space for any external memory file so some capacity may survive the initialisation of the memory card. • It is always advised to make a backup of any data stored on your memory card. • A few memory cards cannot be compatible with a phone, so please contact manufacuture for details.
Getting to know your KU990i The icon indicator bar The icon indicator bar shows what operations are currently taking place, it also the displays the status of the battery and signal strength. This appears through all activities. The table beiow gives a brief explanation of the icons and their function. Instant Launcher Tap the icon, you can view some graphic information supplied by the network provider in the idle screen.

Your standby screen Whenever your KU990i isn’t in use it’ll return to your home screen. From here you access all the menu options, make a quick call and view the status of your phone - as well as many other things. Touchscreen tips The home screen is also a great place to get accustomed to the touch screen. No need to press too hard, the touchscreen is sensitive enough to pick up on a light yet firm touch. Use the tip of your finger to touch the option you require.
Getting to know your KU990i The quick keys T The quick keys provide easy, one-touch access to your most used functions. T Touch to open the full menu which is separated into four submenus. Touch each sub-menu’s vertical tab to view further options. Touch to access the Messaging options menu. From here you can create a new SMS or email, or view your message folder. Touch to bring up the touch dialling pad to make a call.
The status bar Icon Description The status bar indicates, using various icons, things like signal strength, new messages and battery life as well as telling you whether your Bluetooth or GPRS is active. Message sending failed Below is a table which explains the meaning of icons you’re likely to see in the status bar.
Getting to know your KU990i Icon Description Description Indicates that BGM (Background Music) is playing. You can move to player by clicking this icon. While a bluetooth headset is connected, listening a music is possible with stereo functions enabled. Indicates that BGM (Background Music) is being paused. You can move to player by clicking this icon. Call reject - Indicates call reject option has been selected.
Changing your profile from the status bar Touch the icon that represents your current profile setting in the status bar. Select a profile type, for example Silent, and touch OK to save and close. Using the Multitasking function Touch to open the Multitasking menu. From here you can view all the applications you have running and access them with one touch. From any application, touch and select Home screen to return to the standby screen without exiting or closing the application.
Getting to know your KU990i TIP! The quality of the conversation may change depending on network coverage. When the signal strength is below 2 bars, you may experience muting, call drop and poor audio. Please take the network bars as an indicator for your calls. When there are no bars, that means that there is no network coverage: in this case, you won’t be able to access the network for any service (call, messages and so on).

General Functions Adjusting the Volume Lock Touchscreen and Keypad Use the wheel on the backside of the phone to adjust the volume during a call. Keypad Lock Mode can be activated by pressing the key. Answering a Call Signal Strength When you receive a call, the phone rings and the animated phone icon appears on the screen. If the caller can be identified, the caller’s phone number (or name/picture if stored in your Contact list) is displayed.
Changing the Text Input Mode 1. When you are in a field that allows characters to be entered, you will notice the text input mode indicator in the upper right corner of the display. The word changes as letters are typedignore what’s on the screen until the word is typed completely. Example 2. If you want to change modes, tap to step through the available modes. You can go back to previous letter mode by long press .

For example when dialling call centres or other automated telephone services.
Call menu Speed dialling 3 Press You can assign a frequently-called contact a speed dial number. 4 Both calls will be displayed on the call screen. Your initial call will be locked and the caller put on hold. 1 Touch and select Contacts. 2 Touch Speed dials. 3 Your Voicemail is already set to speed dial 1. You cannot change this. Touch any other number to assign it a speed dial contact. 4 Your address book will open.
Viewing your call logs Touch and select Call logs. Choose to view: TIP! Touch any single call log entry to view the date, time and duration of the call. All calls - View the complete list of all your dialled, received and missed calls. Using call divert Dialled calls - View the list of all the numbers you have called. 1 Touch , select settings. Received calls - View the list of all the numbers that have called you. 2 Touch Call divert and choose Video calls or Voice calls.
Call menu 3 Choose any or all of the six options: All outgoing Outgoing international Outgoing international calls except home country All incoming Incoming when abroad 4 Enter the call barring password, which is set to 0000 as default. TIP! Select Fixed dial number to turn on and compile a list of numbers which can be called from your phone. You’ll need your security code which is factory set to 0000. Only numbers included in the fixed dial list can be called from your phone.
Changing your video call settings 1 Touch , select settings. Contacts and choose Call 2 Touch Video call settings. 3 Choose the settings of your video calling. Determine whether to Use private image and select one, switch on the Mirror (so you can see yourself on screen) and select an Image size. Search Searching for a contact There are two ways to search for a contact: From the standby screen 1 From the standby screen touch open the address book.

Or select to switch to address book view and select the tab corresponding to the first letter of the name. 3 Your address book will bring up a list of the contacts corresponding to the letters you’ve entered. TIP! You can switch between the keypad search screen and the alphabetical address book screen by touching the or icon in the top right corner of the screen.
Speed dials This menu allows you to configure speed dial numbers. You can select a number as a speed dial from 3 to 9. You can configure speed dial numbers for any of the 7 numbers for a specific contact address so that a contact address may have multiple speed dial numbers. Settings Display data You can set View contacts from/Name display. (Default setting is Handset & USIM/First name first.) Synchronise contacts Groups This menu allows you to manage group information.
Call menu Restore contacts Memory info. Allows you to restore contacts. You can check the status of USIM or phone memory. Clear contacts This menu deletes contact address information. You can delete contact addresses saved in the handset memory and you can delete the numbers saved on the USIM card. My business card You can compose a business card. If you select Edit, you can make a new business card.
You can send a message to the number in the call record. You can view detailed information about the call records such as the date, time and call duration. You can clear call records. All calls This menu allows you to view all of the missed, received, and dialled call records. You can make a call, or send a message to the number you have selected from the records. You can also save the number in the Contacts.
Call menu Call info Messaging Call durations Your KU990i combines SMS, MMS and email into one intuitive and easy to use menu. Shows call duration time by type. Tap the and select the [Clear] to reset. A security code will be requested. All calls: Displays overall call duration. Dialled calls: Displays dialled call duration. Received calls: Displays received call duration. Last call: Displays the duration of the last call made in hours/minutes/ seconds.
WARNING! You will be charged per 160 character text message for each person that you send the message to. Entering text There are four ways to enter text: T9 predictive, Abc manual, Keyboard and Handwriting recognition. To switch between text entry methods touch the corresponding icon at the top of the screen. Handwriting recognition - Choose Handwriting-Screen or HandwritingBox T9 predictive text - Touch to turn on T9 predictive text then select T9 abc, T9 Abc or 123.
Call menu Abc manual In Abc mode you will see Handwriting recognition . In Abc mode you must touch the key repeatedly to enter a letter. For example, to write ‘hello’, touch 4 twice, 3 twice, 5 three times, 5 three times again, then 6 three times. Keyboard In Keyboard mode the screen flips to landscape and a full qwerty keyboard appears on screen.
Alphabet K If you select capital letter mode (ABC), letters you type will be inserted by capital letters even if you write in small letters, vice versa. Create new message Email Sending a message To send an email, you should first set up an email account. You can write and edit text message, checking the number of message pages. 1. To make text input easier, use T9. icon, you can view 2. If you tap submenus as follow: Insert: You can insert images, video, sounds, symbols, template, emoticon, name & number, new slide or subject. Save to drafts: You can save the message in drafts. Input method: Select the desired dictionary mode.
Call menu Inbox Reply to: You can reply to the sender. You will be alerted when you have received messages. They will be stored in the Inbox. Forward: You can forward the selected In the Inbox, you can identify each message by icons. If the phone shows ‘No space for USIM message’, you have to delete some messages from the Inbox. If the phone displays ‘No space for message’, you can make space of each repository by deleting messages, media and applications.
Email When you access this menu, you can either connect to your remote mailbox to retrieve your new email messages, or you can view the previously retrieved email messages without logging in to the email server. You can check the saved emails, drafts, outbox, and sent emails. In the mailbox, up to 300 emails are stored. Viewing email message list Set as read/unread: You can set the selected email to read or unread. Message info.

Drafts Using this menu, you can preset up to five multimedia messages that you use most frequently. This menu shows the preset multimedia message list. Email You can configure settings for receiving and transmitting emails. 1. Email accounts: You can create or configure an email account including the email server and user ID. Incoming server port - Normally, this is 110 for POP3 accounts and 143 for IMAP4 accounts. SMTP authentication - Choose the security settings for the outgoing mail server. SMTP username - Enter the SMTP username.

Call menu Info. Service Info service messages are text messages sent by the network to GSM phone users. They provide general information such as weather reports, traffic news, taxis, pharmacies, and stock prices. Each type of information is associated with a number, which can be obtained from the service provider. When you receive an info service message, a popup message will indicate a new message receipt or the info service message will be displayed directly.

Multimedia menu My stuff My images You can store any multimedia files into your phone’s memory so that you have easy access to all of your pictures, sounds, videos and games. You can also save your files to a memory card. The advantage of using a memory card is that you can free up space on your phone’s memory. To access the Multimedia menu, touch then . Touch My stuff to open a list of folders storing all of your multimedia files.
Sort by - Sort images into a specific order. Memory manager - View the memory status. TIP! You can store .JPG (.JPEG) files in both the phone and memory card in the Photos folder. In the Images folder in both the phone and external memory you may store JPG, BMP, PNG, GIF, WBMP and other image format files. To setup a JPG/BMP/GIF/PNG file from the Photo folder as wallpaper, go to Menu-Multimedia-Photo album and then select Set as wallpaper in Options menu.
Multimedia menu If you tap the icon in a list, you can view the submenus as follows (in Thumbnail view): Memory manager: Displays the memory status(handset or external memory card). Use as: Use the video as a ringtone. Send: You can send the selected video clip via Message, Email, Bluetooth or Youtube if not protected by Digital Rights Management (DRM). Move: Moves the file into handset memory or external memory.
Others Any type of file can be stored here. This folder is mainly used for transporting files from one PC to another. Blogger / Youtube posting Blogger: You can upload your image to Blogger even if you do not have an account. After inputting the title and description, you can upload this to a temporary blogger URL. After uploading is finished, you have 3 options : Go to URL, Send message and Add to bookmark. You will also get an automatic SMS message containing a temporary URL and a claim token.

After you’ve taken your photo Your captured photo will appear on screen. The name of the image runs along the bottom of the screen together with four icons down the right side. Touch to send the photo as an MMS, Email or via Bluetooth. See Sending a message or Bluetooth, for details. TIP! Move the camera mode switch to to open the photo gallery. See Viewing your saved photos, for details. Touch to take another photo straightaway. Your current photo will be saved.

Settings - Touch this icon to open the settings menu. See Using the advanced settings for details. Camera mode - Camera mode is selected. Flash status Macro on/off Flash - See Using the flash. Quick settings Contrast - See Adjusting the contrast. Shot type - See Choosing a shot type. Back - Touch here to return to the standby screen.
Using the flash The flash is set to off as default, but there are other options. 1 Select from the top right corner of the viewfinder to enter the flash sub-menu. 2 There are three flash options: Auto - Your camera will assess the lighting needed to take a good picture and use the flash as necessary. 4 When you’ve made your selection the flash menu will automatically close, ready for you to take your picture. 5 The flash icon in the viewfinder will change according to your new flash mode.
Multimedia menu Using the quick settings Choosing a shot type 1 Touch to open the quick settings options. These include various options for taking photos at night (e.g. Night or Party), for landscape or portrait photography or to photograph moving subjects (e.g. Sport mode). Select High Sensitive for a more luminescent photo. 1 Touch types. 2 Touch the preset quick setting which best suits the conditions. 3 Take your photo.
Taking a panoramic shot Using the advanced settings Capture life as it appears using panoramic shot. The camera will let you take three photo’s, all aligned, and combine them into one image so that your wide angle view becomes a panoramic photo. From the viewfinder touch to open all the advanced settings options. 1 Touch to open the available shot types and select Panorama. Image quality - Choose between Super fine, Fine and Normal.
Multimedia menu ISO - ISO determines the sensitivity of the camera’s light sensor. The higher the ISO, the more sensitive the camera will be. This is useful in darker conditions when the flash can’t be used. Choose an ISO value from Auto, ISO 100, ISO 200, ISO 400 or ISO 800. Colour tone - Choose a colour tone to apply to the photo you’re taking. See Choosing a colour tone. Self-timer - The self-timer allows you to set a delay after the capture button is pressed.
TIP! The settings menu is superimposed over the viewfinder, so when you change elements of the image colour or quality you’ll be able to see the image change in preview behind the settings menu. Remember to touch Save before exiting to apply any changes. Changing the image size The more pixels, the larger the file size, which in turn means they take up more of your memory. If you want to fit more pictures on to your phone you can alter the pixel number to make the file size smaller.

Viewing your saved photos Viewing the details of a photo 1 You can access your saved photo’s from within the camera mode and from the standby screen. From within the camera you simply move the camera mode switch to , whilst from the standby screen you should move the and then camera mode switch to press the capture button. 1 Touch the photo to bring it to the front of the gallery screen. 2 Your gallery will appear on screen.

Adding and accessing your bookmarks For easy and fast access to your favourite websites, you can add bookmarks and save web pages. 1 From the standby screen select , and choose Browser. then touch 2 Select Bookmarks.
Saving a page 1 Access your required webpage as described above. 2 Touch and select Save this page. 3 Enter a name for the webpage so you can easily recognise it. 4 Touch Save. TIP! This menu will also allow you to edit titles of saved pages, protect or unprotect the screen memo, and delete saved pages. 2 A list of web page titles you have accessed recently will be displayed. To access one of these pages, simply select the required page and touch Connect.
Tool menu Cache Session clear Enabling Cache allows you to store accessed pages to your phone. Once a page has been stored in cache it will greatly enhance the page loading speed on subsequent browsing of the same page. Secure (WTLS/TLS) session data can be cleared using this option. Session data should be cleared to establish a new secure session. Cookies Enabling Cookies allows you to store cookies sent from the server. Disabling this function will prevent cookies from being stored on your phone.

Daylight saving This function enables Summer time. Configuring Daylight saving to On immediately applies summer time for the cities which observe daylight saving and currently daylight saving period is running. (For example, if the current time is 04:53 and daylight saving is running in the currently selected home city in World time then time will change to 05:53). Power save If you set On, you can save the power when you don’t use the phone.

When switching on: Locks the handset whenever the handset is switched on. If USIM changed: Locks the handset when the phone’s USIM card has been changed. Immediate: Locks the handset immediately. None: Deactivates the lock function. You are requested to enter the security code to confirm the selection.
Connectivity - Search: You can select one from the network list stored in the phone. Network settings - Enter new network: You can enter the country code (MCC) and the network code (MNC) to add.
