manufacturersoftabletstonotifyusersofthehealthhazardandtorepair,
replace,orrecallthetabletssothatthehazardnolongerexists.
AlthoughtheexistingscientificdatadoesnotjustifyFDAregulatoryactions,
theFDAhasurgedthetabletindustrytotakeanumberofsteps,including
thefollowing:
•SupportneededresearchintopossiblebiologicaleffectsofRFofthetype
emittedbytablets;
•DesigntabletsinawaythatminimizesanyRFexposuretotheuserthatis
notnecessaryfordevicefunction;and
•Cooperateinprovidingusersoftabletswiththebestpossibleinformation
onpossibleeffectsoftabletuseonhumanhealth.
TheFDAbelongstoaninteragencyworkinggroupofthefederalagencies
thathaveresponsibilityfordifferentaspectsofRFsafetytoensure
coordinatedeffortsatthefederallevel.Thefollowingagenciesbelongtothis
workinggroup:
•NationalInstituteforOccupationalSafetyandHealth
•EnvironmentalProtectionAgency
•OccupationalSafetyandHealthAdministration
•NationalTelecommunicationsandInformationAdministration
TheNationalInstitutesofHealthparticipatesinsomeinteragencyworking
groupactivities,aswell.
TheFDAsharesregulatoryresponsibilitiesfortabletswiththeFederal
CommunicationsCommission(FCC).AlltabletsthataresoldintheUnited
StatesmustcomplywithFCCsafetyguidelinesthatlimitRFexposure.The
FCCreliesontheFDAandotherhealthagenciesforsafetyquestionsabout
tablets.
