devicesafety.TheFDAprovidesthescientificoversight,obtaininginputfromexpertsin
government,industry,andacademicorganizations.CTIA-fundedresearchisconducted
throughcontractswithindependentinvestigators.Theinitialresearchwillincludeboth
laboratorystudiesandstudiesofwirelessdeviceusers.TheCRADAwillalsoincludeabroad
assessmentofadditionalresearchneedsinthecontextofthelatestresearchdevelopments
aroundtheworld.
7.HowcanIfindouthowmuchRadioFrequencyenergyexposureIcangetbyusing
mytablet?
AlltabletssoldintheUnitedStatesmustcomplywithFederalCommunicationsCommission
(FCC)guidelinesthatlimitRadioFrequency(RF)energyexposures.TheFCCestablishedthese
guidelinesinconsultationwiththeFDAandtheotherfederalhealthandsafetyagencies.
TheFCClimitforRFexposurefromwirelessdevicesissetataSpecificAbsorptionRate
(SAR)of1.6wattsperkilogram(1.6W/kg).TheFCClimitisconsistentwiththesafety
standardsdevelopedbytheInstituteofElectricalandElectronicEngineering(IEEE)andthe
NationalCouncilonRadiationProtectionandMeasurement.Theexposurelimittakesinto
considerationthebody’sabilitytoremoveheatfromthetissuesthatabsorbenergyfromthe
tabletandissetwellbelowlevelsknowntohaveeffects.Manufacturersoftabletsmust
reporttheRFexposurelevelforeachmodeloftablettotheFCC.TheFCCwebsite(http://
www.fcc.gov/oet/rfsafety)givesdirectionsforlocatingtheFCCidentificationnumberonyour
tabletsoyoucanfindyourtablet’sRFexposurelevelintheonlinelisting.
