Getting Started Installing the SIM Card and Battery 1 Remove the battery cover Press the battery cover release latch. The battery cover should lift off easily. 2 Remove the battery Lift the bottom edge of the battery, and then carefully remove it from the battery compartment. WARNING: Do not remove the battery when the phone is on; this may damage the phone.
Getting Started 3 Install the SIM card Slide the SIM card into the SIM cardholder. Make sure that the gold contact area on the card is facing downward. To remove the SIM card, pull it gently in the opposite direction. 8 LG GR501 | User Guide 4 Install the battery First, insert the top of the battery into the top edge of the battery compartment. Make sure that the battery contacts align with the terminals on the phone. Press the bottom of the battery down until it clicks into place.
5 Charging your phone Lift the charger port cover on the top of your GR501. Insert the charger connector into the phone (the "B" side of the connector must face up when connecting to the phone), and then insert the plug into the wall socket. Your GR501 must be charged until a message that says “Battery full. Please unplug charger to save energy” appears on the screen. WARNING: Use of unauthorized accessories could damage your phone and void your warranty. Important! Insert the battery before charging.
Getting Started Installing a Memory Card You can expand the memory available on your phone using a microSD™ memory card. The GR501 supports microSD™ memory cards with up to 16 GB of memory. TIP! A memory card is an optional accessory. 1 Lift the memory card cover, and then insert a microSD™ card with the gold contact area facing downwards. Close the memory card cover so that it clicks shut.
Screen Icons The table below describes various indicators and icons that appear on the phone's display screen.
Touch Calibration Adjust your touch screen for ease and press the of use. Touch "+" markers to calibrate the screen. • Once you’ve finished calibrating your screen, Save the settings. Note: To reset the touch calibration, touch , and then touch the tab. Touch , and then choose Touch Calibration.
Start Up Guide After you insert your SIM card and the battery and turn on the GR501, the Start Up Guide will appear on the screen. Touch Start to begin the Start Up Guide. Touch to play the animated Guide for the topic displayed. Or, to move to the touch next topic and Guide.
General Features Making a Call 1 Make sure your phone is on. 2 Touch , and then enter a phone number using the touch pad. Or slide open the qwerty keypad, and enter a phone number using the qwerty keys. To edit a number on the display key screen, simply press the briefly to delete one digit at a time. – Press and hold the key to delete the whole number. 3 Press the [SEND] key to call on the number. Or touch the touch pad.
Ending a Call Making a Video Call When you have finished a call, [END] key. press the You can make a video call in an area with 3G coverage if the person you are calling also has a 3G video phone and is an area with 3G coverage. You can also receive video calls. To make a video call, do the following: 1 Enter the phone number, as usual. 2 To start the video function, touch , and then choose Make Video Call. A message will appear telling you to close other applications to make the video call.
General Features 5 Press to end the call, or close the handset. Note: The video call may take some time to connect. Please be patient. While the video call is connecting, you will see your own image; when the other party answers, his or her image will appear on the screen. Changing your video call settings 1 Press , select Settings, and then choose Call. 2 Select Video call. 3 Choose your video call settings. Decide whether to Use Substitute Image, and then select one.
Answering a Call When you receive a call, the phone rings, and the phone icon appears on the screen. If the caller can be identified, the caller’s phone number (or name if stored in your Address Book) displays. 1 Press the [SEND] key. Or unlock the screen, and touch . If Any Key has been set as the Answer Mode, any key press will answer a call except for the [END] key, , , . and 2 End the call by pressing the [END] key. Note: You can answer a call while using the Address Book or other menu features.

Vibration Mode (Quick) Activate Vibration Mode by on touching and holding the dial pad. You can also adjust Vibration Mode by pressing and holding the side volume keys. The phone will display "Vibrating Mode On". If you want to turn Vibration Mode Off, touch and hold again. Signal Strength If you are inside a building, you may get better reception close to a window. The signal indicator on your phone’s display screen shows you the strength of the signal.
General Features Entering Text ABC Mode Use the phone’s touch pad to enter alphanumeric characters. For example, saving names in the Address Book, writing a message, and scheduling events in the calendar all require you to enter text. You phone supports the following text input modes. In this mode, enter one of the letters labeling a key by touching the key one, two, three, or four times until the letter appears on the screen.
Using T9 Mode T9 predictive text input mode allows you to enter words easily using a minimum number of keystrokes. As you touch each key, the phone starts displaying the characters it predicts you are typing, based on a built-in dictionary. As new letters are added, the word changes to reflect the most likely word candidate in the dictionary. 1 When you are in T9 predictive text input mode, begin entering a word by pressing the touchto . screen keys Press once for each letter.
General Features To delete letters, touch . Touch to delete the and hold down entire text entry. Note: See the table below for more information on the characters available using the keys. [END] key Note: Pressing the will save your unsaved message in the Drafts folder. Touch to enter an Uppercase letter. To change text entry mode from Lowercase to Uppercase, twice, and the key will touch turn orange ; this tells you that Caps Lock has been activated.
Using 123 (Numbers) Mode When in 123 Mode, you can enter numbers in a text message (e.g., a telephone number) more quickly. Touch the keys corresponding to the digits you want before manually switching back to the appropriate text entry mode. T9 Dictionary The T9 Dictionary allows you to add special or personal words to the T9 standard language database. Access the T9 Dictionary in the Text Entry Settings under Options . In the T9 Dictionary, you can add, modify, delete, or reset personal words.
General Features To enter a symbol in the text entry field, press the key, and then select a symbol on the touch screen. Or, to enter a symbol using the qwerty keys, just press , and then press the corresponding key. To return to ABC mode, press again. Complete each word with a space by pressing . To delete a key. character, press the When entering an accented letter When you select French or Spanish as the text entry language, you can enter special French or Spanish characters (e.g.: é).
Note: When you use the Touch Keypad, you can only enter a limited number of special characters. For example, you can only enter "à" and "â" when you press the "a" key repetitively on the Touch Keypad. Using Korean Mode When using the Qwerty Keypad Open the slide and touch . Choose Text Entry Settings and Show Key Guide. The Korean key guide appears on the display screen. To enter numbers, touch . Allows you to type Korean characters when you set the language to Korean.
Contacts On the standby screen, touch , . The following and then touch Address Book submenus will appear. Contact List This menu allows you to save and manage contact address information. With Contact List, you can add new addresses or search for existing contacts by name. To search for a contact, touch , and then enter the person’s name. When on the standby screen, you can directly search for a contact by and then touching touching . 26 LG GR501 | User Guide • • : Search for a contact.
New Contact Use this menu to add a new contact address. Enter contact information such as name, phone number, email address, group information, image, ringtone, and memo. 1 On the standby screen, , and then touch Touch . 2 Touch to set a Picture ID for a contact using a saved picture from Pictures or by taking a new picture of the person. Choose No picture, Pictures, or Take New Picture. After you take a new picture of the person, touch to set it as the Contact Picture ID.
Contacts • Enter the first name, last name, or both. • Enter up to five different numbers. Touch to set the number as a Speed Dial. • Enter an email address. • Select a Group for the contact. • Set a ringtone for the contact, or leave the default ringtone. • Add a Memo, if you like. • Choose whether to save the contact to Phone or SIM Card memory. 3 Touch to save the contact. 28 LG GR501 | User Guide Caller Groups This menu allows you to manage group information.
• Your Voicemail is already set to speed dial 1. This is a default setting that cannot be changed. Touch the speed dial number you want to assign a contact to, . and then touch • To call an assigned speed dial on the number, touch Standby Screen. Then touch and hold the assigned number; the call will automatically be placed to the assigned number. Management • This will open your address book. Touch the contact you want to assign to that number twice.
Contacts Service Number You can view a list of Service Dial Number (SDN) assigned by your network provider. These numbers could include Directory Assistance; Customer Service and Taxi, and voicemail numbers. You may see the names of the available services. Select a service number, and then press the [SEND] key. Please check with your network service provider for more information about service numbers. My Numbers This displays your personal phone numbers, stored in your phone and SIM card.
In-Call Menu Your phone provides a number of control functions that you can use during a call. To access these functions during a call, touch to unlock the screen, and then touch . During a Call The menu displayed on the handset screen during a call is different from the default menu displayed when on the Standby screen. The options are described below. Making a Second Call To make a second call, just select the number you want to dial. 1 Unlock the Screen.
In-Call Menu Answering an Incoming Call Rejecting an Incoming Call To answer an incoming call when your handset is ringing, simply [SEND] key, or touch press the . Your handset also alerts you to an incoming call while you are already on a call. A tone will sound in the earpiece, and the display will show that a second call is waiting. This feature, known as Call Waiting, is only available if your network provider supports it.
WARNING: Because of increased volume levels, do not place the phone near your ear while the speakerphone is enabled. The maximum number of callers in a conference call is five. Once you have set up a conference call, you are in control of the call. Only you can add calls to the conference call. Setting Up a Conference Call Conference Calls The conference call service allows you to have a conversation with more than one party at a time.
In-Call Menu Adding Calls to the Conference Call To add a call to an existing conference call, touch , and then choose Conference Call. Then select Exclude Call and View Members from the Conference Call option. Private Call in a Conference Call To talk privately with one caller in a conference call, touch , and then select Private Call from the Conference Call option. When the numbers of the parties appear, select the one you want to talk to in private.
Your Standby Screen From here, you can access all then menu options, make a quick call, and view the status of your phone, as well as many other actions. Touch Screen Tips The standby screen is a great place to get accustomed to the touch screen. To select an item, touch the icon accurately. You can set your GR501 to vibrate slightly when it recognizes you’ve touched an option. To scroll through lists, touch the last visible item, and then slide your finger up the screen.
Your Standby Screen The Quick Keys The quick keys on your standby screen provide easy, one-touch access to your most used functions. Touch to make a call using the touch Dialing Keypad. Enter the number as you would with a normal keypad, , or and then touch hard key. press the Touch to open Contacts and search for the number you want to call. You can also create new contacts and edit existing ones. Touch to access the Messages options menu. From here, you can create a new outgoing Message.
Home Screen Allows you to use Widgets and even add them to your Home screen. • Click to open the Home Screen. • Drag a Widget from the roll-out Menu onto the Home screen. This allows you to use Widgets. • You can play songs, add memos, check your calendar, play slide shows, set alarms, or add events directly from the standby screen using Home Screen. • Click again to close the Home Screen.
Your Standby Screen • First, touch on the standby screen. Touch and hold down . • Select to choose a contact. You can choose up to six contacts for each page. 38 LG GR501 | User Guide • If you want to delete a contact from the screen, touch . • Touch to align the contacts on the screen.

With the GR501 Annunciator, you can quickly connect to the Music Player, Bluetooth service, and more. Touch the top of the standby screen. • Touch to add another application, touch to delete the application from Shortcuts, to finish. and touch • You can use Music Player to edit a playlist or turn on Bluetooth.

Messaging This menu includes functions related to SMS (Short Message Service), MMS (Multimedia Message Service), voicemail, and your network's service messages. Create Message 1 On the standby screen, select . 2 Touch Create Message. Editing a message The following options are available when Editing a Message. • Symbol: You can insert symbols ranging from sentence notes twice to emoticons. Touch to select the symbols you want. and to scroll You can use through the various pages of symbols.
Messaging Inserting Multimedia files in outgoing messages is easy. Press button, and then select the one of the options below: • Picture: Preview the selected picture. Then touch to insert the selected picture. • Audio: Insert audio from your saved Audio files. • Video: Insert videos from your saved Video clips. • New Picture: Insert a new image taken from the camera by touching [Capture]. • Template - Text: You can easily insert frequently used sentences into your text message. - Multimedia: Preset multimedia templates are available. - Signature: Enter a signature you create yourself. For further details, see page 51. • More: Allows you to insert Subject, vCard, vCalendar, vNote, vTask, or Contact. Note: vCard, vCalendar, vNote, vTask, and Contact are created by the Address Book, Calendar, Notepad, and Tasks functions. See the corresponding sections for detailed information.
Messaging • Delivery Options - Delivery Receipt: If this is set to On in this menu, you can check whether your message was sent successfully. - Reply via Same Message Center: Set this to On or Off. • Save to Drafts: Saves the selected message to Drafts. • Writing Font Size: Set the Writing Font Size to Small, Medium, or Large. • Cancel Message: Allows you to exit the Message without saving what you have already written.
- Delivery Options: Priority, Delivery Receipt, Reply via Same Message Center, Add Cc, and Add Bcc. - Edit Message: Return to message editing mode. - Save to Drafts: Saves the selected message to Drafts. - Text Entry Settings: This menu allows you to set the Text Entry Language. It also gives you the following options: Hide/Show Word Candidate List and Next Word Prediction On/Off. - T9 Dictionary: Access the T9 Dictionary to delete, add, or modify words. - Cancel Message: Cancel your message.
Messaging Note: If you see the message “No space for USIM messages,” you should delete some messages from your Inbox. If you see the message “No space for messages,” you can delete either messages or files to free up space. Inbox You will receive an alert when you receive a message. Alerts are stored in the Inbox. In the Inbox, you can identify each message by icons. To access the Inbox from the Standby , and then touch screen, touch Inbox.
• Extract Data: Make a voice call, or send a message. You can save the number as follows: As New or Updating Existing contact. • Copy to SIM or Move to SIM: Copy/move a message to the Phone. • Message Details: View information about received messages: message Type, Subject, Sender's address, and message Time. The following Options are available in the Inbox folder. • Delete: Select a message to delete. • Standard/Conversation View: Select between the two viewing modes.
Messaging IM The Instant Messaging feature can only be used with the support of the network operator or communities such as Windows Live™ and Yahoo!® Messenger. For Instant Messaging users, a valid User ID and Password is required to log in and exchange messages as well as check online status. 50 LG GR501 | User Guide To access the IM feature 1 Touch , and then touch . Offline Menu Email Sign In This allows users to log in by filling in the User ID and Password. Mobile Email allows you to access your GR501 Sympatico, Windows Live Hotmail, Yahoo! Mail, Gmail, and other accounts on your phone. Now, you can quickly and easily check your email while you are away from your computer. Note: Once the User ID and Password are saved, you will not be required to type them in again during the Log-in process. This feature is optional. Sign Out It begins the log-out process.
Messaging • Log In 1. Highlight the ID entry field, and then touch and type in your existing email ID. 2. Touch the Password field to highlight it, and then enter your password. Quick Tip: Your password is case button sensitive. Press the on the keypad to change to lowercase or uppercase. 3. To save your password, scroll down to Save Password, and then press on the box to check the box. 4. Select Sign In.
Outbox Outbox is a temporary storage place for messages waiting to be sent. When you press the [SEND] key, you can make a call to the recipient number of the selected message. If the message is not sent from the Outbox, you will receive a sound alert along with a Message Sending Failure notice on the screen. Another attempt will be made to send the failed message. After two unsuccessful attempts, the message will no longer be sent automatically. To send the failed message, you must touch .
Messaging These options are available when you select a message in Outbox. • Make Video Call: Make a video call to the sender. • View Status: Shows message status as failed, sent, or error. • Edit: Allows you to edit the selected message. • Select slide: If the multimedia message has more than one slide, you can select and move to the desired slide. • View Attachment: View the message attachment.
Message Settings Text Message To configure Messaging settings, Quick key on the touch the Standby screen, and then touch Message Settings. • Text Templates There are six predefined messages in the list. You can view and edit the template messages or create new ones. The following options are available when you touch . - Add New: Allows you to create a new template. - Delete: Allows you to delete the selected template message. - Delete All: Deletes all messages in the folder.

• Send Read Receipt: Allows you to send a message read confirmation mail for a Multimedia Message. • Download Options - Download Without Ask: Allows Multimedia Messages to be downloaded automatically. - Ask Always: Download a multimedia message manually. - Discard: Used when the user rejects download of the Multimedia Message. • Message Center: The details for the Multimedia gateway are preloaded into your handset and should not be changed.
Messaging Info. Service Info. Service messages are text messages delivered by the network to your handset. They provide general information, such as weather reports, traffic news, tax, pharmacies, and stock prices. When you receive an info. service message, you will see a pop-up message with the relevant information. • Receive: Set the reception status. • Topics: To create a new topic, select Topics, and then touch New Topic on the screen. If you want to edit the topic, touch the topic, and then edit it.
Web This menu shows you how to access the Internet using the WAP browser. Note: Check the availability of WAP services, pricing, and tariffs with your network operator and/or the service provider of the service you want to use. Service providers will also give you instructions on how to use their services. Please contact your service provider to open an Internet account. To launch the browser in Standby mode, touch the Quick key , tab. Touch and then choose the . Once connected, the home page appears.
Web • Bookmarks : Takes you to your Bookmark menu. Holding down this key will add the current page to your Bookmarks. • Zoom : Displays the Zoom bar to Zoom in or out while browsing. Once you are connected to the Internet, the following menu options are available as buttons or through the Options menu : Note: If you are browsing the Internet in Landscape mode, you can access the Options Menu by tapping any part of the browser screen that does not contain a link.
- New Folder: Allows you to add a new folder manually. - List View: View the bookmarks list. < Portrait View > Note: You cannot delete or edit preinstalled bookmarks. • View Full Screen/View Normal Screen: For full-screen view, hold your phone horizontally and open the slide. If you hold the phone vertically and then close the slide, you see normal screen view. • Search Text: Search the current page for specific text. • Recent Pages: View a list of recently visited pages.
Games Access Games on your GR501, or download new ones by browsing the catalog of games available for purchase. To launch Games while on the Standby screen, touch the Quick . key , , and then Note: The JAR file is a compressed format of the Java program, and the JAD file is a description file that includes detailed information. Prior to download, you can view all the detailed file descriptions in the JAD file on the network.
Applications To launch Applications while on the Standby screen, touch the Quick key , tab , and then . This menu displays the list of Java programs downloaded using WAP. You can select, delete, or view in detail all previously downloaded programs in the Application menu. Get More This menu option connects to the GR501 application download site. You can see the available downloaded applications in the list.
Multimedia Camera Touch Touch , then choose the . tab. Take Photo Using your phone's built-in camera module, take pictures of people or events while on the move. In addition, send photos to other devices as picture messages. Press to switch to camera from mode directly. Or choose tab.
Getting to know the viewfinder Back: Touch here to return to the previous screen. Camera mode: Camera mode is on. Image Size Flash status Album Capture: Take the picture Flash Settings: Touch this icon to open the settings menu. See Using the Advanced Settings on page 66 for details. Zoom Bar: Allows you to zoom in and out when taking a picture. This option is only available when taking pictures at 640-x-480 and 320-x-240 resolutions. Video camera mode: Change between camera and video camera modes.
Multimedia Settings Menu Preview tab • View Mode: Choose between Full Image and Full Screen. • Image Size: You can capture an image resolution of 1600 x 1200 / 1280 x 960 / 640 x 480 / 320 x 240. • Brightness: Use the slider to adjust the brightness. • Color Effects: Options include Color, Mono, Sepia, Negative, and Blue. • White Balance: Set the White Balance to Auto, Daylight, Cloudy, Illuminate, or Indoors. • Night Mode: This is useful when taking photos under dark lighting conditions.
Record Video When recording video, you have many of the same Settings options you have when taking a photo. Getting to know the viewfinder Back: Touch here to return to the previous screen. Video mode: Video mode is on. Video Size Flash status Album Start recording Flash Settings: Touch this icon to open the settings menu. Zoom: Touch to zoom in or to zoom out. Multimedia Settings Menu Preview Tab • Video Size: Sets the size of video to 320 x 240 or 176 x 144. • Brightness: Use the slider to adjust the brightness. • Color Effects: Options include Color, Mono, Sepia, Negative, and Blue. • White Balance: Set the White Balance to Auto, Daylight, Cloudy, Illuminate, or Indoors. • Night Mode: Use when recording videos under dark lighting conditions. • Video Quality: Determines the quality of a video clip. Includes options for Super Fine, Fine, and Normal.
Camera Album Pictures View the Album containing your Pictures and Videos. For more available options, touch . One-by-One View/Sort by/Send/ Print via Bluetooth/Delete/Slide Show/Delete All. Touch and the tab, and . then choose This allows you to view pictures while browsing. • Shop Graphics: Connects to the GR501 graphic download site. • Take Photo: Switches to camera mode. • Make GIF Animated file: Make an animation file using the selected images in the list. • View the image files in the list.
Music Music Music Player To launch GR501 Music while in Standby mode, touch the Quick tab, and key , touch the . then touch • All Songs: View all the songs in your music library. • Playlists: Make your own playlists. • Artists: Lists all the artists in your music library, and displays all the songs of a selected artist. • Albums: Lists all the albums in your music library, and displays all the songs on a selected album.
Playing Music To listen to music saved on your phone or in the external memory, follow these quick and easy steps: 1 On the Standby screen, touch , and then open the Multimedia tab by touching . 2 Then touch . 3 Select Music Player to view your options. You can select from All Songs, Playlists, Artists, Albums and Genres.
