Instant WirelessTM Series Network PC Card and PCI Adapter Planning Your Wireless Network Network Topology A wireless LAN is exactly like a regular LAN, except that each computer in the LAN uses an Instant Wireless™ Network PC Card to connect to the network using no wires. Computers in a wireless LAN must be configured to share the same radio channel.
Instant WirelessTM Series Installing the PCI Adapter and Network PC Card in Your Desktop PC Installing the PCI Adapter PCI Adapter Installing the PCI Drivers for Windows 98 1. Once you boot up your PC, Windows 98 will automatically identify the PCI Adapter and prompt you to install the necessary driver. Insert the Setup Utility CD (included) into your CD-ROM drive and click the Next button to proceed. 1. Turn off your desktop PC.
Instant WirelessTM Series 3. Make sure that Specify a location is selected and type D:\WPC11WDT11\Driver in the location box (where “D” is the letter of your CDROM drive). PCI Adapter 5. During the installation, Windows may ask you for your Windows 98 CDROM. When prompted, place your Windows 98 CD-ROM in the CD-ROM drive and click the Next button. If Windows does not find the file, enter C:\windows\options\cabs in the drop down box that will appear. 6. Windows is now ready to install the driver.
Instant WirelessTM Series Installing the PCI Drivers for Windows ME 1. Windows Millennium will automatically identify the Network PC Card, once it is connected to the PC, and prompt you to install the necessary driver. Make sure the Setup Utility CD is in your CD-ROM drive, select “Specify the location of the driver (Advanced)”, and click the Next button to proceed. PCI Adapter 3. At this point you will be returned to the Add New Hardware Wizard screen.
Instant WirelessTM Series Installing the PCI Drivers for Windows NT Windows NT will setup the Network PC Card differently depending upon whether you’ve previously installed network hardware or not. Please follow the instructions appropriate for you. PCI Adapter 3. Installation will begin and you will reach the screen shown below. You will want to select the box that reads Wired to the network since you are adding network hardware. Then, click the Next button to continue.
Instant WirelessTM Series 5. A list of adapters will appear on the next screen. You will not want to select one of these, however, as your Setup Utility CD has all of the appropriate drivers. Click the Have Disk button to continue. 6. On the Insert Disk screen, type “D:\WPC11-WDT11\Driver\WinNT” (where D: is the letter of your CD-ROM drive) in the field provided. Then, click the OK button to continue. PCI Adapter 8.
Instant WirelessTM Series 10. On the screen showing Network Services, the selections are automatically made. Simply, click the Next button to continue. 11. At this point, Windows NT will be ready to start installing Networking Components. Review your selections and click the Next button to continue if everything is correct. Or, click the Back button to make any necessary corrections. 14 PCI Adapter 12.Windows NT may request further files at this point.
Instant WirelessTM Series 14. After setting the Properties fields, Windows NT will begin installing the network components you previously selected. You may be asked if you would like to configure the protocols with a DHCP server on your network. If this screen comes up, check with your Network Administrator before clicking the Yes or No button to continue. PCI Adapter 17. Verify that the correct information is presented on this screen, which will appear next. To make any corrections, click the Back button.
Instant WirelessTM Series If You Have Installed Network Hardware Before: 1. Windows NT is not a Plug-and-Play Operating System and will not automatically identify the PCI Adapter. To begin setup, insert Setup Utility CD into your CD-ROM drive and click Start then Settings to bring up the Control Panel. Then, double-click on the Network icon. 2. To add the Network PC Card, you will click the Adapters tab and then click the Add button to continue. PCI Adapter 3.
Instant WirelessTM Series 6. You will now reach the screen shown here. This is called the Properties screen. Please check with your other wireless computers for the proper settings. For more information concerning these settings, refer to the section called Configuring the Network PC Card for Windows NT. Adjust the settings as are appropriate and click the OK button. 7. The PCI Adapter has now been installed. You will see it added onto this screen.
Instant WirelessTM Series 3. Select Specify a location, and click the Next button. Insert the Setup Utility CD into your CD-ROM drive. On the following screen, type in D:\WPC11WDT11\Driver (where “D” is the letter of your CD-ROM drive) in the Copy manufacturer’s files from field and click the OK button. PCI Adapter 5. The Digital Signature Not Found screen is a notification by Windows 2000. However, this does not mean that there is a problem. Click the Yes button to continue. 6.
Instant WirelessTM Series Installing the PCI Drivers for Windows XP Windows XP will automatically identify the Network PC Adapter, once it is connected to the PC, and prompt you to install the necessary driver. Make sure that the Setup Utility CD (included) is inserted into your CD-ROM drive. PCI Adapter 3. Windows will notify you that the driver has not passed Windows logo testing. Since this product has been tested to work with Windows XP, click the Continue Anyway button. 1.
Instant WirelessTM Series Configuring the Network PC Card Configuring the Network PC Card for Windows 98, and ME After installing the Network PC Card, Windows 98, or Millennium will automatically identify the card. Next, you will need to configure the Network PC Card’s driver software. NOTE: For the easiest way to configure your Network PC Card, please refer to the Configuration Utility section. 1.
Instant WirelessTM Series 4. Select Network Type and select a Value, from the drop down menu, of either 802.11b Ad-Hoc, Ad-Hoc, o r I n f r a s t r u c t u re . The Infrastructure mode allows a wireless adapter to communicate with a wired network employing an Access Point, while the Ad-Hoc modes allow wireless-towireless, peer-to-peer communication. 802.11b Ad- Hoc is for connecting with other Wireless Adapters that comply with the 802.11b standard.
Instant WirelessTM Series 8. The Value for SSID depends on what Network Type selected in item 2. (SSID is also commonly known as ESSID.) If the Network Type you have chosen is "Infrastructure", it should have the same SSID or ESSID name as the Access Point. If the Network Type is "AdHoc", all clients should share the same SSID name. Click Use Wep to continue or the OK button to finish and continue to the Installing Network Protocols section. 9.
Instant WirelessTM Series 32 PCI Adapter 2. The IRQ Base level can be changed in order to avoid possible conflicts with other system devices. 4. The SSID depends on what Mode is selected. If the Mode is Infrastructure, it should have the same SSID name as the Access Point. If the Mode is Ad-Hoc, all clients should share the same SSID name. 3. The Mode setting should be either Infrastructure or AdHoc, depending upon your network’s settings.
Instant WirelessTM Series 34 PCI Adapter 6. RTS Threshold should remain Disabled as set by default. Do not change the setting of the RTS Threshold unless connection quality is poor. Then, increase this setting by the smallest value first to establish a better connection. 8. Select Power Save Mode and select either “Enabled” or “Disabled”. “Disabled” will allow for uninterrupted data communication. Selecting “Enabled” allows your notebook to enter “sleep” mode and could interrupt data communication.
Instant WirelessTM Series 10. The ATIM Window should remain Disabled as set by default. Changing the setting of the ATIM Window may reduce performance. PCI Adapter 12. The TX Rate setting should remain Fully Auto as set by default. Changing this to a different transfer rate will lock in that rate and may result in dropped connections. You may choose between 1, 2, 5.5, 11, or Fully Auto. Click the OK button to continue. 11. The Listen Interval setting should remain at 1 Beacon per Second.
Instant WirelessTM Series PCI Adapter Configuring the Network PC Card for Windows 2000 After installing the Network PC Card, Windows 2000 will automatically identify the card. Next, you will need to configure the Network PC Card’s driver software. 4. On the Properties screen, click the Configure button to configure your card. 1. From the Start Menu, select Settings and bring up the Control Panel. From the Control Panel, double-click the Network and DialUp Connections icon. 2.
Instant WirelessTM Series Installing Network Protocols PCI Adapter 3. Highlight Protocol and click the Add button. Protocols are necessary for computers to be recognized on your network. Windows NT and 2000 users need to check their Windows User Guides for protocol installation. Installing the Network Protocols for Windows 98 and ME 1. From the Start Menu, select Settings and bring up the Control Panel. From the Control Panel, doubleclick on the Network icon. 2.
Instant WirelessTM Series Configuration Utility PCI Adapter 3. TheWelcome screen appears next. After reading this screen, click the Next button to continue. The Configuration Utility is provided to allow you further customization of the Network PC Card, the PCI Adapter, and your wireless network. Installing the Configuration Utility 1. To install the Configuration Utility, first put the Setup Utility CD into your CD-ROM drive. Then, click the Start button, choose Run, and type D:\Setup.
Instant WirelessTM Series 5. The following window will appear next. To install the Configuration Utility in the default directory (recommended), click the Next button. If you prefer to install the Utility in another directory, click the Browse button, locate the preferred directory then click the Next button. 6. When the following screen appears, choose either Infrastructure mode or Ad-Hoc mode, depending on your needs.
Instant WirelessTM Series Infrastructure Mode 1. If you have chosen Infrastructure mode, the following screen will appear. If you have chosen Ad-Hoc mode, skip to the next section. You will be prompted to enter an SSID value in the box provided. The SSID may be up to 32 characters in length and may include any character on the keyboard. All SSID values on your wireless network must match. If you are unsure, use the default value of “linksys”. Then, click the Next button.
Instant WirelessTM Series Ad-Hoc Mode 1. If you have chosen Ad-Hoc mode, the following screen will appear. If you have chosen Infrastructure mode, refer to the previous section. You will be prompted to choose a Channel from the list provided. All computers on your wireless network must be using the same channel in order to communicate with each other. If you are unsure about which channel to use, select the default channel (Channel 6). Once you have chosen your channel, click the Next button.
Instant WirelessTM Series 4. The following screen will appear, indicating that all of the appropriate files are being copied onto your drive. Click the Cancel button if you need to stop the installation for any reason. PCI Adapter Configuring the Network PC Card with the Configuration Utility After you start up the utility from the Program Folder as specified in the previous section, you will see the Wireless LAN Configuration Utility screen.
Instant WirelessTM Series CONFIGURATION ENCRYPTION The Configuration screen allows you to customize the settings for the Network PC Card, the PCI Adapter, and your wireless network. The 40-bit or 128-bit WEP keys can be generated from a user-defined passphrase or entered manually. The Mode setting determines the architecture of your wireless network. Select Ad-Hoc or Infrastructure Mode depending on your network type.

PCI Adapter Troubleshooting Common Problems and Solutions This chapter provides solutions to problems usually occurring during the installation and operation of the Network PC Card. I cannot communicate with the other computers linked via Ethernet in the Infrastructure configuration. • Make sure that the notebook PC to which the Network PC Card is associated is powered on. • Make sure that your Network PC Card is configured on the same channel and with the same security options as with the other computers in the Infrastructure configuration.
