The Importance of a Dummy Load:
Dummy Loads are critical tools used in transmitter
testing. They simulate the resistance load of your
antenna, allowing you to safely power-up your trans-
mitter without actually radiating a signal. This helps
you avoid unwanted RF interference. The Dummy Load
absorbs your transmitter’s energy and converts it to
heat, so make sure you select the proper Dummy Load
to match your transmitter’s power output.
Your Dummy Load should be a pure resistance.
It should also be representative of the ideal impedance
of the antenna and transmission line that’s paired
with your transmitter, typically 50 Ω for amateur use.
The goal is to get a perfect impedance match: an
SWR of 1:1.
In addition to transmitter adjustments, you can also
use Dummy Loads to test cables and feedline.
