2. Aerosol Instruments
An aerosol observation system with primary aim of Atmospheric Radiation measurement (ARM) platform for in situ
aerosol measurements at the surface. The principal measurements are those of the aerosol absorption and scattering
coefficients as a function of the particle size and radiation wavelength. Additional measurements include those of the
particle number concentration, size distribution, hygroscopic growth, and inorganic chemical composition.
i. Alpha/ beta aerosol Monitor for continuous monitoring of aerosol bound activity in air by detector assembly that
includes a leak proof aerosol filter and a sealed countertube with lead shielding
ii. Realtime Particulate Monitor: To measure mass concentration of airborne dust; smoke; haze; mist and fumes, while
providing continuous realtime reading of air; handheld portable instrument with particle sizing monitor/ data logger
and dual impact wavelength nephelometer; For particle size range 30nm to -m diameter; with 72 hr rechargeable
battery
iii. High Volume Air Sampler: For high volume particulate sampling of wide size ranges
iv. Aethlometer: For measurement of black carbon particulate materials.
v. Biological aerosol sampling collector: For effectively collecting particles for determination of airborne biological
threats
vi. efficient inlet system that samples particles up to 8 um diameter
vii. Humidified nephelometers to allow better characterization of vertical profiles of aerosol hygroscopic growth.
