5.3.1.1 Single Tones
Tones are the basic elements of music. With the
term "tone", one, single tone is meant. You have to distinguish tones from sounds, which are
composed of more than one tone. The basis of all tones is, via a frequency, an exactly defined
sinus tone. An instrumental tone, e.g. from a violin, is a complicated mixture of the (playing and
sounding) basic tone and a couple of simultaneously occurring over tones. This fact, among
others, is responsible for the typical sound of the instrument.
5.3.1.2 Tonality
For defining a certain tonality of a chord, all intervals
have to be included. In most cases, the tonality of the chord is corresponds to the basic tone of
the strongest interval.
5.3.1.3 Scale
In the musical field, the adjectives 'major' and 'minor'
can describe a scale, key, chord, or interval. For intervals, the terms refer to a difference in their
relative width, major referring to notes somewhat further apart; the other terms are classifications
based on the use of certain intervals, especially the major or minor third.
