The KI Signature Series, by audio guru Ken Ishiwata, is synonymous with
exceptional sound quality and ultra-fine electronics. Each KI Signature model
receives Ken’s personal attention, and takes audio exhilaration to new levels. But how
does he decide which standard Marantz product should have an alter-ego KI special?
First, Ken inspects, tests, and appraises every new model that Marantz engineers
develop. These products are purpose-designed to answer customer needs in terms of
price and performance – but occasionally Ken discovers one that has within it the
promise of more. “From time to time,” Ken says, “you come across a new product
that has greater potential; it has the rudiments of greatness. I try to develop that
greatness by experimenting with alternative components, seeing how far I can go,
searching for reproduction perfection – and all regardless of cost.”
He may start by simply substituting the standard transformer and chassis with a
To r oidal transformer and copper plated chassis. The Toroidal is more efficient and
more capable of providing the correct power instantly. While the copper plating will
reduce impedance and noise. “These basic improvements cost money, but the
difference in sound quality is well worth it.”

Then he applies different electronic components to achieve an optimised musical
balance. But it’s not just a question of switching to more expensive components, as
Ken explains: “Each element must work in harmony with the rest, they must be
carefully selected to ensure they work in complete harmony. After all, we are dealing
with music.”
The result is a truly no-compromise masterpiece. An icon of perfection. “It’s worth
it,” says Ken. “Because music matters.”
