Informationen zum Vorbild: Die 13 Schnelltriebwagen der Bauart „Hamburg“ waren ursprünglich alle mit elektrischer Kraftübertragung ausgerüstet. Angetrieben wurden die beiden Achsen des in der Zugmitte vorhandenen Jacobs-Drehgestells. Ende der 40er Jahre wurden die nach dem Zweiten Weltkrieg noch vorhandenen Fahrzeuge instandgesetzt, als VT 04.1 bezeichnet und erhielten den inzwischen für Triebzüge üblichen roten Anstrich. Eingesetzt wurden sie stets zusammen mit den dreiteiligen VT 06.
