Choosing a Freezer
Purchasing a freezer is a major decision, and deciding what size freezer you need can be the hardest part of the
decision. A freezer's capacity can range from less than 10 cubic feet for a small household to nearly 25 cubic feet for
large families and commercial use. Continue reading to learn more about the different sizes freezers are available in

About Freezer Capacity
Freezer capacity is displayed in cubic feet. However, this is not always the most useful measurement to help you
determine which freezer capacity is best for you. Rather, pounds of food per cubic foot can be a helpful way to
choose a freezer. Generally speaking, for every 1.0 cubic foot of space, there will be room for approximately 35
pounds of food, though this will vary depending on the kind and shape of items being stored. To ensure that you will
have enough space for all of the food your family needs, allow for at least 35 pounds (2.5 cubic feet) of freezer space
per person.
Use the helpful chart below to help you choose the perfect freezer size:
Number of People in
Household
Cubic Footage Needed Approximate Food Capacity
1 2.5 35 lb
2 5.0 70 lb
3 7.5 105 lb
4 10.0 140 lb
5 12.5 175 lb
6 15.0 210 lb
7 17.5 245 lb
8 20.0 280 lb
9 22.5 315 lb
10 25.0 350 lb
Note: If you frequently entertain guests at your home, purchase groceries in bulk, garden, or hunt, you will want to
purchase a larger freezer than what the guidelines above indicate.
