• Boot to Window s–Select this check box to start W indows when you start
your computer. When you deselect this check box and restart your
computer, it boots up and takes you tothe DOS prompt (usually the C:\>
prompt). To s tart W indows from this prompt, type WIN and press E
NTER.
• Boot delay in seconds–Selector enter the number of seconds of delay you
wa nt when boo ting the PC. You can increase t he boot delay to h av e e xtra
time for pressing the Windows startup hot keys.
• Safe mode warning message–Select this check bo x if you want W indows
to display a warning message if it start s in S afe mode. If Windows cannot
start n ormally for some reason, it starts in Safe mode,soyoucanmake
cha nge s to eliminate the p ro blem.
• Enablenetworkinsafemode–Select this chec k box if you want to start
Windows in Safe mode including ne twork capabilities.
• Enable fail safe mode –tells W indows to boot i n Safe m ode, even if
everything appears to be O K.
• AlwaysloadDoubleSpacedrivers–Mostlikelyyoushouldkeepthischeck
box selected. The DoubleSpaced river is the filenamed Dblspace.bin.It
is us ed to access drives compressed using DoubleSpace. DoubleSpace is a
disk compression method that creates a compressed drive, which is
actually a compressed volume file, or CVF, (usually named
DBLSPACE.001) that is stored on your hard drive.
• Always load DriveSpace drivers–Most likely you should keep this check
box in i ts default sta te. The DriveSpace dr iver is a file named
Drvspace.bin. It is used to access d rives co mpressed u sing DriveSpace.
DriveSpace is a Windows 95/98 disk compression method that creates a
compressed drive which is a compressed volume file (usually named
DRVS PACE. 001) that is stored on the hard dr ive.
• Enable non-native drive double buffering–Thisoptionisset
autom atically by Wind ow s and ge ne rally should not be changed. Se lect
this check box to avoid lock-ups or errors if your PC has an ISA controller
card and aDOSdriver, and if you have ov er 16M B of RA M in your PC. If
yourPCd oesnoth avean ISAdiskcontrollercardorifyouusean ISAdisk
controller card, but have 16MB o r less of RAM, keep this check box
deselectedbecause thedoublebufferingcould slow downtheperformance
ofyour computerand itpr ovides nobenefitbelow the 16MB threshold for
ISA cards.
• Enable boot-time hot keys–Select this check box if you want to be able t o
usetheW indowsstartupkeys(alsocalledsho rtcutorhotkeys).Pressthese
hot keys aft er t he Windows st arting message appears and before the
Windows 95/98 s tartup screen appears.
