• Email plugins.OneofthemostconvenientwaystousePGPisthroughone
of the popular em ail applications supported by the PGP plug-ins. W ith
these application s, you can encrypt and sign as well as decrypt and verify
your messages while you are composing and reading your mail with a
simple click of a button.
• PGPtray. PGPtray is a convenient means fo r launching the various PGP
utilities. Located i n t he S y stem Tray, PGPtray enable s you to op en the
PGPkeys wind ow, the Preference s dialog, or PGPtools. In addition, if you
need to encrypt or decrypt files, you can do s o d irectly from the W indows
clipboard by right clicking on the desktop and choosing the appropriate
PGP menu option.
• PGPtools. Ifyouareusinganemailappli cationthatisnots upportedbyt he
plug-ins, you can easily encrypt the text of the message using PGPtools.
PGPtools enables you to encrypt and sign files on the hard disk of your
computerfor secure storage,and tosecurelywipefilesfrom your hard disk
so that sensit ive data can’t be re trieved with d isk recovery software.
• PGPdisk. PGPdisk enables you to create secure volumes of information,
such as floppy disks or areas of your hard drive.
Using PGP
Before you can begin using PGP, you need to generate a key pair. A PGP key
pair is co mposed of a private key to which o nly you ha ve access and a public
key that you can copy andmake freely available to everyone with whom you
exchange information.
To create a key pair
Launch the PGPkeys application to create a n ew key pair. From the PG Pkeys
window:
1. Choose New Key from the Keys menu.
2. The PGP Key G eneration Wizard asks you to enter your name and email
address. You do not have to enter your real name or even your email
address. Ho wever, using your real name makes it easier for ot hers t o
identify yo u as t he o wner of your public key.
3. Click Next; then select a key type.
4. Select a key size, or enter a custom key size from 768 to 4096.
5. Choose w hen the key pair expires (enter a specific d ate or accept the
default, Never).
