Password Protection
While M cAfee Firewall is designed to protect a Windows computer from
unwanted network communication, the security it provides can be
undermined if the configuration can be a ltered. T his is especially easy on
Windows 95 and 9 8.
Th is prob lem is partially address ed by adding pass word protection to the
configuration file . The protectio n is only partial because o nly the operating
system can provide access control, such as is found in Linux and Unix.
When you use a password to protect your configuration:
The settings cannot be c hanged while McAfee Fire wall is ru nning unless
the c orrect password has been en tered.
The tamper ing of the configuration f ile will be detected the next ti me
McAfe e Firewall is run, if (and whe n) the p asswo rd is ente red
If the passwordh as notbeen entered, new networking applicationsw ill be
blocked automatically.
