Configuring System Settings
Th e f ollowing steps will help th e Administrator set up the System portion of
theconfiguration.Whilethec onfigurationfile(CPD.SFR)isnotintendedtob e
transferrable, the A pplications settings can be successfully copied from one
system to another. The System settings cannot. This is because different
systemshavedifferentnetworkdevicesanditisuncommontofindtwothat
are the same.
1. List all the network segments that are connected to computers that are to
be configured.
Include internal networks and any co nne ction to an external network (e.g.
the Internet) even if it is by modem. Thisis often a simple task,since most
computers have just one or two network connections.
2. Decide what n etwork traffic should be allowed on each network segment.
3. Select the Settings menu item, and the System option on the popup menu.
4. From the list of network devices, determine which device is connected to
which netwo rk seg ment you listed in Step (1). If you have one modem but
seetwo"Dial-UpAdapter" entries,oneof themmaybe a M icrosoftVirtual
Privat eNetworkAdapt e r.Usua lly,theentrywiththelowerdevicenumber
(e.g. [0000]) is the physical device and the other is the virtual device.
5. For each device:
Highlight the device in the list and select Prope rt ie s.
A ccording to the policies you defined in Step (2) above, allow or block
the different types of n etwork traffic.
Choose OK w he n done. Note : changes take effect for this dev ice when
you choose OK on the Properties page. C hoosing Cancel on the
System/Settings page d oes not cancel these changes.I f in doubt, review
the settings later to confirm.
6. Choose OK to close the System/Settings dialog box.
NOTE: You must check System Settings a fter adding or removing
network devices.
