What Cookie Blocker does
Cookies are smallfiles thatyour Web browser stores onyour PC attherequest
of a W eb server. Each tim e you view a Web page from the Web server, your
browser sends the cookie back to the server. These cookies can act l ike a tag,
which lets the Web server track what pages you view and how oftenyou
return to them. Some Web sites, such as Microsoft Expedia
™
, use cookies to
store your passwor d and preferences so that you can automatically log on to
the site.
Internet Guard Dog’s Cookie Blocker offers three options for controlling the
use of cookies on yo ur com p uter. Internet Guard Dog can:
• Reject all cookies.
• Accept all cookies.
• Display an alert message each time a cookie is sent to your browser. The
alert d isplays the nam e of the entit y t rying to set the cookie, and p rovides
you the option either to accept the cookie or not.
When setting up Cookie Blocker in ProtectionSettings, you can select one
optionfordirect sitesand anotherforindirect sites. Directsites aret hose that
you deliberately access. For e xample : typing th e URL address in the
location bar of your Web browser; clicking a link in a Web page; or
selecting from your list of bookmarks or favorite sites. Indirect sites are
those that you access because the site y ou are connecting to directly
displays contentfrom anothersiteas part of itsown content. For example,
if you went direct ly to Cool_site.co m, it cou ld display an ad from
Ads-r-us.com (the indirect site) in a separate frame in the Cool_site page.
