From the System tray
You can access many of the m ain P GP functions by clicking the lock icon,
which is normally located in the System tray, and then choosing the
appropriate menu item. (If you can’t find this icon in your System tray, run
PGPtray from th e Start men u).
Performing PGP functions from the clipboard
You will notice that many of the options on the System tray refer to PGP
functions that you perform from the Windows clipboard. If you are using an
email application that is not supported by t he PGP plug -ins, o r if you are
working with t ext generated by some o ther application, you perform your
encryption/decryptionands ignature/verificationfunc tionsviatheWindows
clipboard.
For instance, to en crypt or sign text, you copy it from your application to the
clipboard,encryptandsignitusingtheappropriatePGPfunctions,thenpaste
itbackintoyourapplicationbef ores e ndingittotheintende d recipients.When
you receive an encrypted o r s igned ema il message, you s im ply reverse the
process and copy the encrypted text, k nown as ciphertext from your
application to t he clipboard, decryp t and verify the inform ation, and then
view the contents. A fter you v iew the decrypted message, yo u can decide
whether to save the information or retain it in its encrypted form.
Opening the PGPkeys window
WhenyouchooseLaunchPGPkeysfromthePGPpop-upmenu,the PGPkeys
windowopens, showingtheprivateand publickeypair s youhavec reatedfor
yourselfas wellasany publickeys of otherusersthatyou have addedto your
public keyring. (If you have not a lready created a new k ey pair, t he P GP Key
Generation Wizard leads you through the necessary steps. From the PGPkeys
window you can crea te ne w key pairs and manage a ll of yo u r oth e r keys. For
instan ce, this iswhere you examinethe attributes associated with a particular
key, specify how con fident you are that the keya ctually belongs to the alleged
owner, and indicate how wellyou trust the owner of the key to vouch for the
authenticity of other users’ keys.
Setting PGP Preferences
WhenyouchoosePGPPreferencesfromthePGPpop-upmenu,youaccessthe
PGP Preferences dialog box i n which y ou specify settings that affect how the
PGP pr ogram functions based on your co mputing environment . By clicking
the appropriate tab, you can advance to the preference settings you want to
modify.
