McAfee VirusScan
• The VShield scanner. This component giv e s you continuous anti-virus
protectionfrom viruses that arriveon floppy disks,fromyour network,or
from varioussources on theInternet.TheVShieldscannerstartsw henyou
start your computer, and staysin memory untilyou shut down. A flexible
setofpropertypagesletsyoutellthescannerwhichpartsofyoursystem
to exa mine, what to look for, w hich parts to leave alo ne, and how to
respond to any infecte d files it finds. In addition, th e scanner can alert you
when it finds a virus, and can summarize each of its actions.
Th e VShield scanner comes with thre e othe r specialize d modules that
guard against hostile Java applets and ActiveX controls, that scan e-mail
messages and attachments that you receive from the In ternet via Lotu s
cc:Mail, Microsoft Mail or other mail clients th at comply with Micr os oft’s
MessagingApplication ProgrammingInterface (MAPI) standard,andthat
block access to d angerous Internet sites. Secure password protection for
your configuration o ptions prevents others fr om making unauthori zed
cha nge s. The same convenient dialo g box controls configuration options
for all VShield modules.
• Safe & Sound.Thiscomponent allowsyoutocreatebackupsetsin
protected volumefiles,whichisthe safestandpreferredtypeofbackup.A
protected volume file is a sectioned-off area of the drive, som etimes called a
logic al drive.
NOTE:Safe & Sound is only available for Windows 95, 98 and
Windows ME.
• Quarantine. T his comp onent allo ws you t o mo ve infected files to a
quarantine folder. This moves infected files from areas where they can be
accessed and enables you to clean o r delete them at your convenience.
• The E-Mail Scan extension. This c omponent allows you to scan your
Microsoft Exchange or Outlook mailbox, or public folders to whichyou
have access, directly o n the s erver. This invaluable “x-ray” peek into your
mailboxme ansthatVirusScan softwar ec anfindpo tentialinfectionsbefore
they make their way to your desktop, which can stop a Melissa-like virus
in its tracks.
• A cc:Mail scanner. This co mponent includes technology optim ized for
scanning Lotus cc:Mail mailboxes that do not use the MAPI standard.
Install and use this component if your workgroup or network uses cc:Mail
v7.x or earlier.
