McAfee VirusScan
All of the command-line scanners allow you to initiate targeted scan
operations from an M S-DOS Prompt or Command Prompt window, or
from protected MS-DOS mode. Ordinarily, you'll use the VirusScan
application's graphical u ser interface (GUI) to perform most scannin g
operations, but if you ha ve trouble starting Windows or if t he VirusScan
GUI components will no t run in yo ur environment, you can use th e
command-line scanners as a backup.
What’s new with VirusScan?
This VirusScan release introducesa number of innovative new features to the
product’s c ore functionality, to its range of coverage, and to the details of its
application architecture. Thesinglemos t sig nificantc hange between previous
VirusScan versions and this release, however, is the integration of two
separateVir usScanversionsoptimizedto runon separateW indowsplatforms
into a single product that runs on both. This single product also takes full
advantage of each platform’s strengths.

Installation and distribution features
McAfee anti-virus products, including VirusScansoftware, now use the
Microsoft Windows Installer (MSI), which comes w ith all Windows 2000
Profes sional sy ste ms. This S e tup utility offers a we alth of custom installation
and configuration features that make VirusScan software rollout across large
organizations much easier and m ore intuitive.
Interface enhancements
Th is release m oves t he Viru sScan int erface for all s upporte d platfor ms solidly
into the territory VirusScan anti-virus software forW indows 95, Windows 98
and Windows ME pioneered with its v 4.0.1 release. T his adds extensive
VShield scanner configurat ion options for the Windows NT Wo rkstation v4.0
and W indows 2000 Professional p latforms,while reducing the c omplexity of
some previous configurat ion options. A le rt Manager serve r configuration, for
example, moves entirely over to the NetShield product l ine—VirusScan
software now a cts strictly as a configurable client application.
This release also adds a new Vi rusScan control panel, which fun ctions as a
central point from which you can enable and d isable all VirusScan
comp onents. T his con trol panel als o lets you set a ce iling for t he num b e r of
items you can scan i n or exclude from a single operation, and can set the
VShield scanner and VirusScancontrol panelto run at startup. Otherchanges
