McAfee VirusScan
I f BOO TSCAN.EX E finds a virus , it wil l try t o clean the infected file. If it
fails , it wi ll deny access to the file andconti nue the scan operation. Aft er
it finishes all of its scanning passes, it shows a summary report the
actions it took for each hard disk on the screen. The report tells you:
• Ho w ma ny files the scanner examined
• How ma ny files of that number are clean, or uninfected
• H ow many files contain potential infections
• How ma ny files of that number the scanner cleaned
• H ow many boot sector and MBR files the scanner examined
• H ow many boot sector and MBR files contain potential infections
If the scanner detects a virus, it beeps and r eports the name and location
of the virus on the screen.
6. When the s canner fin ishes examining your hard disk, remove the
Em ergency Disk from your floppy drive, then s hut your computer off
again.
7. When B OOT SCAN.EXE finishesex amining your s ys tem, you can either:
• Return to working with you r computer. If BOOTSCAN.EXE did
not f ind a viru s,orifit cleanedany infected files it did find,remove
the Emergency Disk from your floppy drive, then restart your
co mputer normally. If you had planne d to install VirusScan
software on your computer but stopped when Setup found an
inf ection, yo u can now contin u e with your installation.
• Try to clean or delete inf ected files yourself. If BOOTSCAN.EXE
found a virus that it could not remove, it will identify the infected
filesandtellyouthatitcould notcleanthem ,orthatitdoes nothave
a current remover for the infecting virus.
As your next step, l oc ate and de le te the infected file or files. You w ill
need to restore any files that you d elete from backup files. Be sure to
check your backup files for infections also. Be sure also to use the
VirusScan application at yo u r earliest oppor tunity to scan your system
completelyinordertoensurethatyoursystemisvirus-free.
