not install or run mo re than one VShi el d scanner on the same
wo rkstation. Doing so can ca use the scann e rs to interfere with each
others' operations.
Why use the VShield scanner?
The VShield scannerhasun ique capabilitiesthatmakeit anint egralpart ofthe
VirusScan comprehensive anti-virus software security package. These
capabilities include:
• On-access scanning. This means that the scanner looks for viruses in file s
that you open, copy, save, or otherwise modify, and files that you read
from or write to floppy disks and n etwork drives. It therefore can detect
and stop viruses as soon as they appear on your system, i ncluding those
that arrive via e-mail or as downloads from the Internet.This means you
canmaketheVShieldscannerbothyo urfirstlineofanti-virusdefense,a nd
yourbackstoppr otectioninbetweeneachscanoperationthatyouper form.
The VShield scanner detects viruses in m emory and as they attempt to
execute from w ithin infected files.
• M alicious object detection and blocking. The VShield scanner can block
harmful ActiveX and Java objects from gaining access to your system,
before they pose a threat. The sc anner d oes this by scanning the hu ndreds
ofobjectsy oudownloadasyouconnecttothewebortootherInternetsites,
and the file attachments you receive with your e-mail.It compares these
itemsagainstacurrentlistofharmfulobjectsthatitmaintains,andblocks
those that couldcause problems.
• Internet site filtering. The VShie ld scanner comes with a list o f da ngerous
web-orInternetsitesthatposeahazardtoyoursy stem,usuallyintheform
of downloadable malicious software. You can add any other site that you
wanttokeepyourbrowsersoftwarefromconnectingto,eitherbylistingits
Internet P rotocol (IP) address or its domain name.
• Automatic op eration. The VShield scanner integrates with a range of
browser software and e-mail client applications.This allows thescannerto
log on to and scan your e-mail attachments for viruses before they ever
reach your computer.
