• Check for D uplicate File Nam es–checks for duplicate file names—files
with the same name in the same d irectory.
• Test Drive Surface–performs read/write tests of a disk’s recordable
surface media. If a sector is damaged, Disk Minder saves the data
elsewhere so you can try to recover it later. Disk Minder maps out the
bad sectorso it won’t be used in the future.
• Surface S can Repetitions–becomes ac tive if you select t he Test Drive
Surfa ce check bo x. E nt er a number between 1 and 10 , for the numbe r of
times you want to perform a complete read/write test on the dr ive’s
surface. If y ou decide to run several repetitions, yo u may also w ant to
use the Aut o Fix Errors option and let Disk Minder perform the tests
whileyouareawayfromyourPC.
NOTE: There i s also a Read/Write/Read/Compare Surface Scan
av ailable. This is a more in-d epth diagno st ic te st and can often find
damaged sectors (orsectors thatare likely to fail)where thenormal
surface scan cannot.
Creating and reverting to an Undo file
IfDiskMinderfind saproblem,itasksif youwantt ocreateanUndo filebefore
making any changes t o the d isk.
• To create a n Undo file, click Yes and pick a des tination for the Undo file.
• ToreverttoanUndofile,c lickUndointheDiskMinderw ind ow.Selectthe
drive with an Undo file you want t o use . Then click OK.
Using Disk Minder in DOS
Disk Minder lets you repair disks even i f you cannot start Windows.
To use Disk Minder in DOS:
1. Do one of the follow ing at the DOS prompt, and pr ess E
NTER:
Type: C:\WINDOWS\DMDOS
Disk Minder s earches yo ur PC for d rives and th en asks you to s elect th e
drivesyouwanttocheckfromtheDriveslist.
2. Press the T
AB key to change the d riv e s that are cu rrently selecte d to be
scanned. Selected drives have an x beside them in the list.
