Using Disk Tune to defragment or consolidate a disk
Afte r you specify one or more dr ives to tu ne and click N ext >, D isk Tu ne
analyzesthedriveto determinethe mostsuitable levelsofoptimization.Once
the a nalysis is complete, depending upon the degree of fragmentation, Disk
Tune recommends one of four methods:
• Reorder and Unfragment–defragments your files and arranges them on
the hard dis k a ccord ing to all the criteria specifie d in the Advanced
options.
• Fu ll Unfragment–defragments your files and writes them to the hard disk
sothatallfr eespacei sgroupedseparatelyfromusedspace,withoutregard
to th e File Placement c rit e ria s p ecified in the Defragm entation Op tions
dialog box (click the Advanced button).
• QuickUnfragment–defragments your fragmentedfilesand rewritesthese
to the disk without rearrangingother files, and without regardto the File
Placement criteria. Free space remains fragmented.
• Consolidate Free Space– moves files and file segme nts to the beginning o f
thedisk without regard to the File Placement criteria,so that allfree space
appears at the end . Files remain fragmented.
Disk Tune displa ys a map of your hard drive with blo cks th at a re color cod ed
by status. You can watch the map change asD isk Tune analyzes the disk,and
you can cust omize the colors codes and click a block in the hard drive map to
identify its contents.
