The hard disk map
DiskTune displays amapoftheh arddiskwith blocks—eachblockconsists of
a v ariable number o f clusters, d epending on the disk’s size—color coded to
indicate their status.
You can id entify the contents o f a block in the hard d rive map by clicking it.

these particular files are fragmented, or held (d esignated a s unmovable), and
so o n. The file lis t offers inf ormation on the Cluster Numbe r, Contents,
Condition , Ty pe, an d Attribu tes of all the f iles in the block. You can also click
a column title to sort files by that column.
Setting advanced options
You can access Disk T une’s advanced options by clicking the A dvanced
button. T he Defragmentation O ptions dialog box a ppears, which provides
three tabs of o p tions: Functions, File P lacement a nd Directory Sort.
The Functions tab
The Functions tab allows you to select the functions, safety level and write
verification levels.
• ZeroFreeS pace–zerosoutthefreeclustersafteryoufinishtuning thedisk.
This wipes out any leftover data from deleted files, an d prevents recovery
using an undelete program.
• Show Final O rga niza tion–showsthefinalmapofyourdiskonceyouhave
completedd efragmentation and optimization.
• Single Sector I/O–reads and writes data on a “single sector by single
sector” basis. This meth od is v ery slow but m ay be necessary fo r some
types of disk drive controllers.
• Remove Deleted Directory En tries–removes d eleted entries from
directories and consolid ates active entries t o optimize directories.
• OptimizetheSwapFile–optimizesth eWindowsSwapFileto improvethe
performance o f your system.
• Safe Mo de and Exclusive Lock–increases the safety of your data during
optimization. Safe M ode takes extra steps to ensure that you will not lose
any drive data even in the event of a power failure. Exclusive L ock
prevents any other application from accessing your disk during the
tune-up which wo uld slo w down the t u ning process.
