In advanced file placemen t configurations, you can decide where on the disk
various file groups will be located. Disk T une div ides the disk into five
reg ions: Top , High,Middle, Low, and Bottom, and it lets you specify in which
oftheseregionst he various filecategoriesareplaced.Inaddit iontothedefault
filecategories,DiskTune letsyoucreatetwo categorieso f yo ur ownfiletypes,
such as help fil es, graphic images, and so on. You can also group r ecently
mod ified file s and allocate specific areas of the disk to hold them. T he dialog
boxes where you spec ify f ile characteristic s of any of these customizes file
groups are identical, a llowing you to crea te file gro ups for your own exact
requirements.
Initially, youneed to identify the file types to include in your g ro up in theFile
Specifications t ext box, using the adjacent Add, Remove, or Clear All buttons.

lets you use wild ca rdsin the Add dialogb ox tolocateall file s of acertain type.
For exam p le, entering *.HLP locates all the help file s. You can find all files on
your drive, or limit your search for all files in a directory (including or
excluding subdirectories). Cl ickin g the msoffice directory and entering the
file name *.HLP cre ates a fil e specification of \msoffice\*.HLP,which
locatesall the h e lp files in the MicrosoftOffice d irectory. Yo u can also include
or exclude files that are greater than, or less than, a specific size range.
Your other options include:
Using the o perato rs And and Or,so you can groupall files you have selected
in the F ile Specifications text b ox. And or Or files must meet the criteria you
specify in the other check boxes,such as:
Th e condition of your files (Fragmented, Optimized or Str addle d).
The attributes of your files, (such as Archiv e, Read-only, or Hidden).
The date range of your files, where y ou can specify a date range (in
dd/mm/yyyy forma t) when the files were last mo dified, last a ccessed
and/or created.
In most cases, the d efaults provided by Disk Tune shou ld work fine.
Occasionally, you may need to customize the positions of file categories on
yourdisk.Ingeneral,filesyou donotmodify,butaccessfrequently,shouldbe
placed as high (near the beginning) on the disk as possible to improve access
times. Files that you frequently modify should be placed as close to the free
space as possible, to d ecrease the amount of work your system has to d o.
