Setting Policy for On-Access Scanning
Scanning files only when they are read from disk can be a element of
an effective virus protection program. However, under some
circumstances,scanning files only when they arewrittentodiskmay
not be equally effective.Foradditionalinformation,seethe footnote
page 39.
4. Under Scan Floppies, select At system shutdown to scan any floppy
disk that is left in the drive when the computer shuts down.
5. UnderWhattoScan,youcanchoosetoscan allfiles,default files, or only
program files—those file types you can see byclicking Extension.
• Select one of these three choices:
All files Scans every file, irrespective of the file type.
Default files
Scans only those file types that the scanning engine
recognizes as susceptible to virus infection. This list
of file types is specific to the current scanning engine
and the current virus definition (.DAT) files in use.
McAfee recommends selecting this option.
Custom files Scans only those file types with a file name extension
that appears in the list of extensions.
Click Extension to view or edit the list of Custom
Files included in scanning activities. The Program
File Extensions dialog box appears (Figure 3-4).
