2- SAFETY PRECAUTIONS MEASURES DE SECURITE PRECAUCTIONES DE SEGURIDA[. SAFETY PRECAUTIONS (ANSI B175.1-1991, 2-1. KICKBACK SAFETY FOR CHAIN SAW USERS Annex C, CAN3-Z62.1-M85 FEB85) PRECAUTIONS WARNING Kickback may occur when the nose or tip of the guide bar touches an object, or when the wood closes in pinches the saw chain in the cut. If the bar tip contacts, it may cause a lightning-last reverse reaction, kick the guide bar up and back towards the operator.
2. Keep a good firm grip on the saw with both hands, the right hand on the rear handle, and the left ha_, on the front handle, when the engine is running. Use a firm grip with thumbs and fingers encircling tl chain saw handles. A firm grip will help you reduce kickback and maintain control ol the saw, Don't t, go, Make sure that the area in which you are cutting is free from obstructions. Do not let the nose of the gui(: bar _:ontact a log.
2. DO NOT operate a chain saw when you are fatigued. 3. Use safely footwear, devices. 4. Use caution when handling lueL Move the chain saw at least 10 teat (3 m) Irom the fueling point before starting tile engine. DO NOT allow other persons to be near when starling or cutting with the chain saw. Keep bystanders and animals oul ol the work area. 5. snug-fitting clothing, protective gloves, and eye, hearing and head protection 6.
13. When cutting a limb that Is under tension, be aled for springbeck so that you will not be struck when the tension in the wood fibers is released. 14. Keep the handles dry, clean, and tree of oil or fuel mixture. 15. Operate the chain saw only in well-ventilated areas. 16. DO NOT operate a chain saw in a tree unless you have been specifically trained to do so. 17.
A C 2-3A 2-3. MORE ABOUT 2-3B KICKBACK WARNING DANGER! BEWARE OF KICKBACK! Kickback can lead to dangerous loss of control of the chain saw and result in serious or fatal injury to the sa operator or to anyone standing close by. Always be alert. Rotational kickback and pinch-kickback are maj_ chain saw operational dangers and the leading cause ol most accidents. BEWARE OF: ROTATIONAL KICKBACK (Figure 2-3A) A = Kickback path B = Kickback reaction zone 2-3.
KICKBACK may occur when the NOSE or TIP of the guide bar touches an object, or when wood closes in and pinches the sew chain In the cut. Tip contact in some cases may cause a lightning-fast reverse reaction, kicking the guide bar up and back toward the operator. PINCHING.the saw chain along the BOTTOM ol the guide bar may PULL the saw Iorward away from the operator. F_NCHING the saw chain along the TOP of the guide bar may PUSH the guide bar rapidly back toward the operator.
2 3 WARNING 1. Beware of kickback. 2. Do not attempt to hold saw with one hand. 3. Avoid bar nose contact. RECOMMENDED 4. Hold saw properly wilh both hands. AVERTISSEMENT |_ M I, Attention aux rebonds. 2. Ne passe servir de la trongonneuse d'une seule main. 3. Eviter tout contact avec la pointe du guide-chalne. RECOMMANDE deu 4. 3-4A 3-4. SAW CHAII_I TENSION ADJUSTMENT Proper tension of saw chain is extremely important and must be checked beforte starting, as well as during any cuttin, operation. ; Taking the time to make needed adjustments to the saw chain w II result in improved cart ng performance and pmionge chain lt[e. CAUTION A new saw chain stretches, requiring adjustment after as few as 5 cots.
D I / 3-4B TO ADJUST SAW CHAIN: 1. Hold nose of guide bar up and turn a_ustroent screw (D) CLOCKWISE to increase chain tension. Tuming scr, COUNTERCLOCKWISE will decrease amount of tension on chain. Ensure the chain tits snugly aMthe way arou, Iha guide bar (Figure 3-48). 2. After making adjustment, end while still holding nose of bar in the uppermost position, tighten the bar retaining nt, securely. Chain has proper tension when it has a snug lit all eroend and can be pulled around by gloved hand.
3-5A 3-5B WARNING , The purpose of the CHAIN BRAK_ is to reduce the possibility of inju_/due to kickback; however, it cannot provide the intended measure of protection _fthe sew is operated carelessly. . . Start making the upper notch cut ((3) on the side of the tree facing the felling dhecifen (E).
6-1C Never saw completely through the trunk. Always leave a hinge. The hinge guides the tree. If the think is co_letely cu through, control over the felling direction is lost. Insert a wedge or felling lever in the cut weg before the tree becomes _nstable arid stads to move. This will prevent tfK guldebar from binding in the felling cut if you have misjudged the falling direction. Make sure no bystanders have enterer the range of the falling tree before you push it over. ING Before making the linaf cut.
6-2A 6-2. _ 6-3A LIMBING Llmblng a tree is the process of removing the branches from e lagen tree. Do not remove supporting limbs (A) until after the log Is bucked (cut) into lengths (Figure 6-2A). Branches under tension should be cut from the bottom up to avoid binding the chain saw. WARNING Never cut bee limbs while standing on tree trunk. :6-3. BUCKING Bucking is cutting a fallen log into lengths. Make sure you have a good footing and stand uphill of the leg when cutting on sloping ground.
I 6-3C 2. Log supported on I end: First. col from bottom (underbuck) 1/3 diameter of log to avoid splinledog. Second, cut from above (overbuck) to meet lirst cut and avoid pinching (Figure 6.3B). 3.
