1.2 Intended use The Melitta CAFFEO® CI® is intended exclusively for the preparation of coffee and speciality coffees, for heating water and for heating milk. ENGLISH ® Proper use means: • that you carefully read, understand, and comply with the operating instructions. • that you especially comply with the safety instructions. • that you use the Melitta® CAFFEO® CI® within the operating conditions specified in these operating instructions. 1.
2 General safety instructions Please carefully read the following instructions all the way through. Failure to comply with the instructions can affect your own safety and the safety of the appliance. Warning! –– Keep the following objects out of the reach of children: packaging materials, small parts. –– All persons using the appliance must be familiar with its operation in advance, and they must be instructed in the possible hazards associated with the appliance.

My Coffee Press to select your preset personal coffee settings.
Starting up ENGLISH 4 When starting the appliance for the first time, please carry out the following steps. • Placement • Connecting • Switching on for the first time • Selecting a language • Setting the time • Filling the bean container • Filling the water tank When you have completed these steps, the appliance is ready for operation. You can now prepare coffee. We recommend pouring away the first two cups of coffee after the first start up. 4.
4.2 • Connecting Plug the power cable into an appropriate power socket. Warning! Danger of fire and electric shock due to incorrect supply voltage, incorrect or damaged connections and power cable. –– Ensure that the supply voltage corresponds to the supply voltage specified on the identification label of the appliance. The identification label is on the right side of the appliance behind the cover (Fig. B, No. 13). –– Make sure that the power socket meets the applicable standards for electrical safety.
Fill the bean container (see page 11) and press the rotary switch to confirm. →→ The prompt to fill the water tank will appear on the graphic display. • Fill the water tank and reinsert it in the appliance (see page 12). →→ The rotary switch flashes and System start appears on the graphic display. • ENGLISH • Place a vessel under the outlet and press on the rotary switch. →→ The appliance performs an automatic rinse and hot water flows out of the outlet. The buttons are then illuminated.
Note When the tilt lever is vertical during the brewing process, no beans fall into the grinder. 4.5 Filling the water tank • Flip up the lid of the water tank (Fig. A, No. 6) and pull the water tank up and out of the appliance. • Fill the water tank to the maximum mark with fresh tap water and reinsert it. 5 Switching on and off For switching on when starting up the appliance for the first time: see page 10. 5.
Preparing beverages, adjusting settings immediately before dispensing Two options are available for preparing beverages. • Standard dispensing: Settings such as coffee strength, quantity of coffee and milk and can be changed directly before dispensing. • My Coffee button : Personal settings that are already entered and saved can be called with the My Coffee button (see page 19). 6.
6.2 Preparing a cappuccino Prerequisite: The appliance must be ready for operation (see „Switching on and off“ on page 12). • Place a suitable vessel under the outlet. • Push the outlet downwards as far as it will go. • Connect the short tube with the outlet and the supplied Melitta® CAFFEO® CI® milk container (Fig. C) or use the long tube for conventional milk cartons. • Press the button for coffee strength • Press the button for cappuccino to adjust the coffee strength. .
Preparing a latte macchiato Prerequisite: The appliance must be ready for operation (see „Switching on and off“ on page 12). • Place a suitable vessel under the outlet. • Push the outlet downwards as far as it will go. • Connect the short tube with the outlet and the supplied Melitta® CAFFEO® CI® milk container (Fig. C) or use the long tube for conventional milk cartons. • Press the button for coffee strength to adjust the coffee strength. • Press the button for latte macchiato . • Carry out the Easy Cleaning programme, if necessary. The appliance will prompt you to do this automatically (see page 31) OR select another beverage. 6.4 Preparing milk froth or warm milk Prerequisite: The appliance must be ready for operation (see „Switching on and off“ on page 12). • Place a suitable vessel under the outlet. • Connect the short tube with the outlet and the supplied Melitta® CAFFEO® CI® milk container (Fig. C) or use the long tube for conventional milk cartons.
Preparing hot water Prerequisite: The appliance must be ready for operation (see „Switching on and off“ on page 12). • Place a suitable vessel under the outlet. • Press the button for hot water ENGLISH 6.5 . →→ Hot water will start dispensing. Dispensing ends automatically when the set water quantity is reached. • Turn the rotary switch to adjust the water quantity while the hot water is being dispensed.
• Turn the rotary switch to adjust the dispensed quantity while the coffee is being dispensed. • To stop dispensing coffee before the programmed amount is reached, press the button for café crème or the rotary switch.
My Coffee button: Preparing beverages with personal settings Prerequisite: The appliance must be ready for operation (see „Switching on and off“ on page 12). • ENGLISH 7 If necessary, create a user in the menu and save personal beverage settings for this user, see page 21. Marie • Place a suitable vessel under the outlet. • Press the My Coffee button continuously until the desired user name is displayed. • Press the button for your desired beverage (see page 13).
8 Overview and operation of menus 8.1 Accessing the main menu Prerequisite: The appliance must be ready for operation (see „Switching on and off“ on page 12). • Settings Exit My Coffee Care 8.2 Press and hold the rotary switch for more than two seconds. →→ The main menu will appear on the graphic display. • Turn the rotary switch to select the sub-menu you require. The selection is highlighted.
By pressing any of the dispensing buttons, you can exit every sub-menu directly and return to standby mode. 8.3 “My Coffee” sub-menu ENGLISH Note In this sub-menu, you can set and save different beverage settings for standard dispensing and for "My Coffee" dispensing.
Entering user settings for beverages Latte Macchiato Exit Milk quantity Froth quantity • • Turn the rotary switch until the beverage is highlighted for which you want to adjust the user settings, e.g. Latte macchiato and press it to confirm the selection. • Turn the rotary switch until the property is highlighted for which you want to save a setting e.g. Milk quantity. Press the rotary switch to confirm the selection. Turn the rotary switch until the desired quantity is highlighted, e.g.
You can disable a stored user name, for example if the user has not used the appliance over a long period. The user remains stored but cannot be selected using the My Coffee button. Enabled/Disabled Exit Disabled√ Enabled • Select the user name you wish to switch to disable. • Select Enabled/disabled in the menu. • Turn the rotary switch until Disabled is highlighted and press the rotary switch to confirm the selection.
Starting the care and cleaning programme • Care Easy Cleaning Intensive Cleaning Cleaning • Select the Care sub-menu. →→ The care and cleaning programmes are displayed on the graphic display. • Turn the rotary switch until the care and cleaning programme you wish to start is highlighted, e.g. Intensive Cleaning and press it to confirm the selection. Turn the rotary switch until Start is highlighted and press it to start the programme.
"Set clock" sub-menu You can change or deactivate the time in this sub-menu. Set clock 13 : 10 : 07 • Select the Set clock sub-menu. • Turn the rotary switch to select the desired hour and press it to confirm. • Turn the rotary switch to select the desired minutes and press it to confirm. ENGLISH 8.6 →→ The time is saved. The appliance automatically returns to the main menu. Deactivating the time display • Enter the time 00:00. →→ No time is displayed when the appliance is ready for operation.
Auto OFF at • Turn the rotary switch until OFF at... is highlighted if you want to program a switch-off time. • Turn the rotary switch to select the desired hour and press it to confirm. • Turn the rotary switch to select the desired minutes and press it to confirm. →→ The time is saved. The appliance automatically returns to the main menu. Note It is not possible to fully disable the Auto-OFF function.
"Language" sub-menu In this sub-menu, you can set the language for the graphic display. • Select the Language sub-menu. • Language Exit English√ Français Turn the rotary switch until the desired language is highlighted and press it to save the selected language. ENGLISH 8.9 →→ The question Change language? is displayed. • Turn the rotary switch until Yes is highlighted and press it to confirm the selection. →→ The selected language is saved. The appliance automatically returns to the main menu.

Danger of burning and scalding from hot steam The machine releases hot steam when it is vented. Never allow any part of your body, e.g. your face to come into contact with the hot steam. Venting Remove water tank • Lift the lid of the water tank (Fig. A, No. 6) and pull the water tank up and out of the appliance. ENGLISH Warning! →→ The appliance is vented. The appliance then automatically switches off completely. 8.
9 Care and maintenance 9.1 General cleaning • Clean the outside of the appliance with a soft, damp cloth and ordinary dishwashing liquid. • Empty and clean the drip tray regularly, at the latest when the float (Fig. A, No. 2) projects out of the cup plate. • Clean the coffee grounds container regularly. Caution! To avoid damage to the appliance surface, do not use scouring cloths, sponges or cleaning products. 9.
Never clean the brewing unit in the dishwasher. • Let the brewing unit drip dry. • If necessary, remove coffee residues from the surfaces in the interior of the appliance where the brewing unit is inserted. • Reinsert the brewing unit into the appliance and turn the handle of the brewing unit anti-clockwise to stop to lock. • Insert the two catches of the cover into the back of the appliance and swing the cover to the left until it locks into place. 9.
You can also rinse the milk unit in-between. Care Quick rinsing Easy Cleaning Intensive Cleaning Easy Cleaning Exit Start • Place a vessel below the outlet. • Select the Care sub-menu. • Turn the rotary switch until Easy Cleaning is highlighted and press it to confirm the selection. • Turn the rotary switch until Start is highlighted and press it to start the programme. • Connect the tube to the outlet and to the drip tray (Fig. D).
Fill the milk container with 50 ml of milk system cleaning agent and then fill it up to the 0.5 l mark with warm tap water. • Connect the tube to the milk container and to the outlet and press the rotary switch to confirm. →→ The “Intensive Cleaning” programme will start. This will release steam from the machine and hot cleaning liquid will flow out of the outlet. ENGLISH • →→ Subsequently, the programme interrupts automatically and prompts you to rinse the milk container.
• The milk container and the milk distributor are dishwasher-safe. Caution! Do not clean the front cover with the chrome-plated outlet openings in the dishwasher. • Reassemble the parts in reverse order. 9.6 Integrated cleaning programme The integrated cleaning programme removes residues, including coffee oil residues, that cannot be eliminated by hand. It takes a total of approximately 10 minutes. You can check the progress of the programme at any time on the progress bar on the graphic display.

The prompt Insert cleaning tab into ground coffee chute will then appear on the graphic display.
9.7 Integrated descaling programme The integrated descaling programme removes lime scale in the interior of the appliance. It takes a total of approximately 25 minutes. You can check the progress of the programme at any time on the progress bar on the graphic display. Caution! –– Run the integrated descaling programme every 3 months; at the latest, however, when a prompt appears on the graphic display. –– Only use the Melitta® ANTI CALC Espresso Machines descaling agent.
Comply with the safety instructions and the dosing information specified on the descaling agent packaging. 8 Reinsert the water tank. 9 Place a vessel with a capacity of about 0.7 l or the coffee grounds container under the outlet and press the rotary switch to continue. ENGLISH Warning! 10 Connect the tube to the drip tray and to the outlet (Fig. D) and press the rotary switch to confirm. Descaling Empty container and tray →→ The integrated descaling programme is continued.
16 Remove the tube from the drip tray. 17 Empty the drip tray and the coffee grounds container and then reinsert them. →→ The integrated descaling programme has finished. The appliance is ready for operation. 10 Inserting, changing and removing the water filter A Melitta® Claris® water filter is supplied with the appliance for filtering out lime scale and other contaminants. Using the filter helps to reduce the required frequency of descaling.
Carefully screw the Melitta® Claris® water filter into the thread on the base of the water tank using the screw-in aid at the bottom end of the coffee scoop provided. • Fill the water tank to the maximum mark with fresh tap water and reinsert it. • Press the rotary switch. • Place a vessel with an approximate capacity of 0.5 l under the outlet and press the rotary switch to confirm. ENGLISH • →→ The appliance rinses and then returns to standby mode. The water hardness is automatically set to Soft.
→→ The appliance rinses and then returns to standby mode. 10.3 Removing the water filter • Flip up the lid of the water tank (Fig. A, No. 6) and pull the water tank up and out of the appliance. • Unscrew the water filter from the thread on the base of the water filter. • Reinsert the water tank. • Select the Remove filter menu option from the sub-menu. • Turn the rotary switch until Start is highlighted and press it to confirm the selection.
Transport and disposal 11.1 Transport • Clean the drip tray and coffee grounds container. • Vent the appliance, page 28. • Empty the bean container. • Secure loose parts (cup plate et cetera) with suitable adhesive tape. • Transport the appliance in the original packaging if possible, including the hard foam elements, to prevent transport damage.
12 Troubleshooting Problem Cause Solution Coffee only flows drop by drop. Grinding fineness is too fine. Set the grinding fineness coarser. Clean the brewing unit. Descale, if necessary. Run the integrated cleaning programme, if necessary. Coffee does not flow. Water tank not filled or incorrectly inserted. Fill the water tank and make sure it is inserted correctly. Brewing unit is obstructed. Clean the brewing unit Beans do not drop into the grinder (beans are too oily).
Warning! Risk of crushing injury Never reach into the interior of the appliance when it is in operation.
