Measure three 32" boards on the 5/4" x 8" x 8' select pine.

STEP 1: Measure Boards

Cut three 32" boards out of the select pine using a miter

saw. Always be safe and wear safety goggles when sawing.

STEP 3: measure dowels Measure nine 4" lengths on the 1/2" x 36" round dowel. STEP 4: cut dowels Cut out the nine 4" dowels. STEP 5: mark dowel locations Clamp all three boards together and set them upright. Mark dowel locations on each board 2" from both ends and one in the middle. You should end up with three marks on each board, two at the ends and one directly center. STEP 6: cross marks Draw a line across the three marks made in the previous step.

STEP 8: tape drill bit Measure 4" from the tip of the 1/2" drill bit with one of the 4" dowels cut earlier. Wrap a small band of tape around the 4" mark on the drill bit to use as a drilling depth indicator. STEP 9: drill Drill into each mark made with the screwdriver in Step 7. Stop drilling when the drill bit reaches the beginning of the tape attached in the previous step for the proper depth of each hole.

STEP 13: mark dowels Mark 1-1/2" on each of the 4" dowels. STEP 14: sand dowels Sand the longer portion of each dowel (the end further from the 1-1/2" mark). Insert each dowel into the drill chuck, hold out a piece of sandpaper supported by a piece of wood, and spin the dowel on the sandpaper. The longer end of each dowel should have a slightly tapered shape to allow for easier assembly later.

STEP 18: stain Apply the wood stain of your choice. STEP 19: wipe clean Wipe stain clean with a rag. STEP 20: apply polyurethane Pull each ripped portion away from the shelf board after the stain has dried. Apply two to three coats of clear satin polyurethane. STEP 21: map out shelf locations Map out the locations on the wall where you would like to install your shelves. STEP 22: find studs Use a stud finder to find the studs before drilling into your wall.

STEP 23: transfer stud marks to shelves Mark the stud locations onto the 1-1/2" ripped shelf boards. STEP 24: pre-drill for fastening Pre-drill holes where marked in the previous step. STEP 25: countersink screws Using an impact driver, countersink the screws into the 1-1/2" boards to attach them to the wall. STEP 26: attach shelves Push the shelf boards onto the dowels to complete the shelves.
