CONGRATULATIONS! You are the owner of a world-class heat producing gas direct vent sealed combustion fireplace. This elegant, highly efficient Fireplace will be a constant source of comfort and fascination. It will be the focal point of beauty and interest in your home. The Mendota Gas Fireplace is a true heating appliance incorporating the traditional aesthetics of fireplace fire viewing with the controllability and fuel efficiency of a home gas furnace.
GENERAL INFORMATION Your Mendota Gas Fireplace has a state-of-the-art co-axial direct vent, sealed combustion system. This advanced, highly efficient system brings in outside air for combustion has a separate exhaust vent and efficiently heats and re-circulates room air. The Mendota system maintains high air quality, maximizes efficiency and assures proper operation in today's "tight" homes.
TOP VENT AND REAR VENT OPTIONS DISCUSSION This Mendota Fireplace can be vented using AMERIVENT, DURAVENT, SELKIRK METALBESTOS, SECURITY CHIMNEY brands of coaxial pipe off the top or using 5”x8” coaxial pipe off the rear. Use only Mendota specified vents and vent caps when installing your fireplace. Closely follow venting locations, directions and requirements provided in this Manual. Observe the restrictions related to vent position on exterior of home (see PG. 8).
GAS SUPPLY REQUIREMENTS CORRECT GAS PRESSURE AND PROPER GAS SUPPLY LINE SIZING IS IMPERATIVE TO THE SUCCESSFUL PERFORMANCE OF YOUR MENDOTA GAS FIREPLACE. BE SURE THE GAS SUPPLIER OR PLUMBER CAREFULLY CHECKS FOR CORRECT GAS PRESSURE AND GAS LINE SIZING WHEN INSTALLING THE FIREPLACE. IT IS CRITICAL TO CAREFULLY CHECK FOR GAS LEAKS WHEN HOOKING UP THE FIREPLACE -- CHECK WITH SOAP & WATER SOLUTION. BE SURE TO INSTALL "APPROVED" FLEX GAS LINE WITH BRASS-TO-BRASS FITTINGS TO PREVENT GAS LEAKS AT CONNECTIONS.
GAS PRESSURE REQUIREMENTS A MAJOR CAUSE OF OPERATING PROBLEMS WITH GAS APPLIANCES CAN BE IMPROPER GAS PRESSURE! Such problems as changes in flame color or configuration, gas pilot or burner outages, intermittent operation, changes in heat output, excessive burner noise, etc. are nearly always the result of changes in gas pressure or improper gas pressure at the time of the installation.

A-2. ELEVATED RISE THROUGH-THE-WALL VENTING The required vertical rise is 48 in. when used with a maximum horizontal run of 12 ft. For other venting configurations within these maximum limits, see Figure 6, PG. 14. NOTE: The horizontal run of vent pipe must be level or have a ¼" rise for every 1' of run toward the termination. Never allow the vent to run downward. This will cause high temperatures and the possibility of a fire.
B-1 VERTICAL THROUGH-THE-ROOF VENTING The maximum vertical run of vent pipe is 36 ft. from the top of the fireplace. The fireplace will support a run of a maximum of 36 ft. Maintain 1" air space clearances on all sides of vents (2" above horizontal runs). IMPORTANT: REFER TO DRAWINGS ON PAGES 1-15 WHILE FOLLOWING THESE INSTRUCTIONS. The DXV-35 Fireplace must be installed by a qualified Mendota approved serviceperson. 1. Place the fireplace in its desired location.

REAR FLUE VENTING COMPONENTS 5”X8” DURAVENT VENT PIPES AND COMPONENTS ARE RECOMMENDED.
REAR FLUE VENTING REQUIREMENTS NOTE: A 9” MAXIMUM HORIZONTAL PIPE SECTION CAN BE USED WHEN VENTING THE DXV35 USING THE REAR VENT OPTION AGAINST A FLAT EXTERIOR WALL or IN AN EXTERIOR CORNER. WARNING MENDOTA RECOMMENDS THE USE OF DURAVENT 5”X8” COAXIAL PIPES AND FITTINGS. DURAVENT COMPONENTS PROVIDE THE MOST FLEXIBILITY SINCE DURAVENT HORIZONTAL TERMINATION CAPS SLIDE FULLY OVER THE 6” OR 9” STRAIGHT PIPE SECTION USED. COMBUSTIBLE MANTEL MUST REMAIN IN THIS TRIANGULAR AREA.
INSTRUCTIONS FOR HORIZONTAL VENTING AGAINST EXTERIOR WALL Mendota recommends the use of Duravent 5”x8” coaxial pipes and fittings. Duravent components provide the most flexibility since Duravent horizontal termination caps slide fully over the 6” or 9” straight pipe section used. Using Amerivent pipes and components are limiting and will increase the minimum framing depth. A 9” maximum horizontal pipe section is permitted when venting horizontally using the rear vent option against an exterior flat wall.
WARNING: Only Horizontal Runs are allowed when using the Rear Vent Option. 1. Position fireplace in desired location against an exterior wall. See PG. 8 for guidelines on proper vent cap placement on the exterior of home. Check to determine if wall studs are in the way when venting system is attached. If this is the case, you may want to adjust the fireplace location. 2. Determine the desired floor level for the fireplace.
CORNER INSTALLATION USING THE REAR VENT OPTION NOTE: The horizontal run of vent pipe must be level or have a ¼" rise for every 1' of run toward the termination. Never allow the vent to run downward. This will cause high temperatures and the possibility of a fire. USING OFFSETS AND RETURNS: A single 45º horizontal elbow is already calculated into the allowable maximum 9” horizontal run.
WARNING: Only Horizontal Runs are allowed when using the Rear Vent Option. When planning to install the DXV35 Fireplace with the rear vent option in an outside corner, it is recommended that thorough calculations and measurements be made prior to any construction. The diagonal distance desired will determine the exact location on the wall where the Horizontal Termination Cap will be placed relative to the inside corner. 8. Position fireplace in desired location. See PG.

DXV-35XL DEEP TIMBER LOG SET INSTALLATION INSTRUCTIONS ORIFICE SIZES REQUIREMENT: When the DXV35 employs the rear vent option, the rear burner orifice must be changed in the Natural Gas configuration to a #53 Spud Orifice (supplied with the Fireplace). The front burner orifice remains unchanged at #42 for Natural Gas applications. See LP kit for LP Gas applications. 1. Cut the clear tapes and outer plastic wrap using a sharp utility knife or equivalent.
2. Place Log “1” between Rear Brick Panel and rear-most burner tube – centered left to right in firebox and butted against rear brick. Leave a ¼” gap between front surface of log #1 and rear burner tube. 3. Place Log #2 between rear-most burner and middle burner tube as shown below. Place this log so that the pilot light notch and burner tube notches are positioned properly, as shown. The tilt angle of this log will be fixed in subsequent steps as you install Logs #3 and #4.
4. Place Left Top Log #4 behind Log #2 and on top of Log #1 in the left rear corner area, as shown below. 5. Place right front log #6 behind front burner as shown. Slide this piece towards the right until it’s under structure touches the U-bend in the burner tube.
6. Place left front log #5 behind front burner and to the left of Log #6, as shown. Slide to the right side and butt Log #5 against Log #6. 7. Slide Log #5 to the right side until it butts against the left edge of Log #6.
8. Place log #3 as shown below – Align Pin in Log #2 with Hole in Log #3. Rotate Log #3 downward until Pin in Log #2 is inserted into hole in Log #3. 9. Log #3 rests on top of Log #2 and Log #6, as shown above. Rotate front end of Log 3 towards the right as far as its freedom allows. Do not force.
10. The completed log set shall look as depicted in the Figure below. 11. Add Large Chunk Coals, first, in the area shown in the diagram below.
12. Space coals apart about ¼ inches side to side and bridge coals that span across the burner ports across the burner tube so that the coals do not plug any burner ports. This also provides for a cove under each coal that will glow red and create an attractive ember bed effect. If you provide large gaps between the large chunk coals and leave the gaps open, the front burner flames will yield random yellow flames along the front edge and between the coal pieces. Avoid packing small coals tightly.
