Occupant safety 40 Useful information i This Operator's Manual describes all Safety models and all standard and optional equipment of your vehicle available at the time of publication of the Operator's Manual. Country-specific differences are possible. Please note that your vehicle may not be equipped with all features described. This also applies to safetyrelated systems and functions. i Read the information on qualified specialist workshops: (Y page 25).
Occupant safety Introduction SRS consists of: RThe 6 SRS warning lamp bags RAir bag control unit (with crash sensors) REmergency Tensioning Devices RBelt force limiters SRS reduces the risk of occupants coming into contact with the vehicle's interior in the event of an accident. It can also reduce the effect of the forces to which occupants are subjected during an accident.
Safety 42 Occupant safety cover, outer sides of the seat backrests, door trim panels, or door frame trims. RDo not install additional electrical/ electronic equipment on or near SRS components and wiring. RKeep area between air bags and occupants free of objects (e.g. packages, purses, umbrellas, etc.). RDo not hang items such as coat hangers from the coat hooks or handles over the door.
G WARNING In order to reduce the potential danger of injuries caused during the deployment of the front air bags, the driver and front passenger must always be correctly seated and wear their seat belts. For maximum protection in the event of a collision, you must always be in the normal seat position with your back against the backrest. Fasten your seat belt and make sure that it is correctly positioned on your body.
44 Occupant safety i After an air bag has been deployed, have Safety the vehicle towed to the nearest qualified specialist workshop, even if your vehicle is ready to drive. Front air bags The front air bags increase protection for the driver's and front passenger's head and chest. The deployment of front-passenger front air bag ; is also influenced by the weight category of the front passenger, which is determined by the Occupant Classification System (OCS) (Y page 47).
Driver's knee bag : deploys under the steering column. If, during a frontal collision, the system determines that air bag deployment can offer additional protection to that provided by the seat belt, driver's knee bag : is deployed along with the driver's air bag. Driver's knee bag : operates best in conjunction with correctly positioned and fastened seat belts. Side impact air bags intended protection in the event of an accident.
46 Occupant safety Safety The side impact air bag on the frontpassenger side will deploy if the frontpassenger seat belt is fastened, regardless of whether the front-passenger seat is occupied or not. Pelvis air bags Pelvis air bags are not available for AMG vehicles. G WARNING Only use seat covers which have been tested and approved by Mercedes-Benz for your vehicle model. Using seat covers or other seat coverings can cause a malfunction of the side impact air bags and/or the pelvis air bags.
Occupant safety vehicle acceleration/deceleration. You will then be protected by the fastened seat belt. 47 display messages that can be displayed in the instrument cluster (Y page 229). Occupant Classification System (OCS) How the Occupant Classification System works The Occupant Classification System (OCS) categorizes the occupant on the frontpassenger seat using a weight sensor. The front-passenger front air bag is deactivated automatically for certain weight categories.
Safety 48 Occupant safety When the OCS senses that the front passenger seat occupant is classified as an adult or someone larger than a small individual, the 45 indicator lamp will illuminate for approximately six seconds when the engine is started and then go out. This indicates that the front passenger front air bag is activated. If the 45 indicator lamp is illuminated, the front passenger front air bag is deactivated and will not be deployed.
Occupant safety If the driver's air bag deploys, this does not mean that the front-passenger front air bag will also deploy. The OCS may have detected that the seat: Ris empty or occupied by the weight of a typical child up to twelve months old, seated in a child restraint system. Ris occupied by a small individual, such as a young teenager or a small adult. Ris occupied by a child in a child restraint system whose weight is greater than that of a typical twelve month old child.
50 Occupant safety being empty, the PASSENGER AIR BAG OFF indicator lamp will continue to light up and not go out. Safety G WARNING If the 4 5 indicator lamp does not illuminate, the system is not functioning. You must contact an authorized Mercedes-Benz Center before seating any child on the front passenger seat. For more information about the OCS, see "Problems with the Occupant Classification System" (Y page 51).
Occupant safety 51 Problem Possible causes/consequences and M Solutions The PASSENGER AIR BAG OFF indicator lights up and remains on. The person on the front-passenger seat: The OCS is malfunctioning. X Make sure that the front passenger is sitting in a correct, upright position. X Have the OCS checked as soon as possible at a qualified specialist workshop. X Observe the additional display messages in the multifunction display (Y page 229).
52 Occupant safety G WARNING Safety If the 45 indicator lamp does not illuminate or remains out with the weight of a typical 12-month-old child in a standard child restraint or less, or is unoccupied, on the front-passenger seat, do not transport a child on the front-passenger seat until the system has been repaired.
Occupant safety NECK-PRO head restraints/NECK-PRO luxury head restraints increase protection of the driver's and front-passenger's head and neck. In the event of a rear collision of a certain severity, the NECK-PRO head restraints/NECK-PRO luxury head restraints on the driver's and the front-passenger seats are moved forwards and upwards. This provides better head support.
Occupant safety 54 infants and children traveling in the vehicle as well as on child restraint systems. Safety G WARNING Remove resetting tool : from the vehicle document wallet. X Slide resetting tool : into guide ; between the NECK-PRO luxury head restraint and the rear cover of the head restraint. X Push resetting tool : downwards until you hear the head restraint deployment mechanism engage. X Pull out resetting tool :.
Even where this is not required by law, all vehicle occupants should correctly fasten their seat belts before starting the journey. i See "Children in the vehicle" (Y page 59) for further information on infants and children traveling in the vehicle as well as on child restraint systems. Correct use of the seat belts G WARNING USE SEAT BELTS PROPERLY RSeat belts can only work when used properly.
56 Occupant safety Safety G WARNING Do not pass seat belts over sharp edges. They could tear. Do not allow the seat belt to get caught in the door or in the seat adjustment mechanism. This could damage the seat belt. Never attempt to make modifications to seat belts. This could impair the effectiveness of the seat belts. Fastening seat belts G WARNING According to accident statistics, children are safer when properly restrained on the rear seats than on the front-passenger seat.
Occupant safety 57 up. Otherwise, the seat belt or belt tongue will be trapped in the door or in the seat mechanism. This could damage the door, the door trim panel and the seat belt. Damaged seat belts can no longer fulfill their protective function and must be replaced. Visit a qualified specialist workshop. Adjust the height so that the upper part of the seat belt is routed across the center of your shoulder. X To raise: slide the belt sash guide upwards.
Safety 58 Occupant safety After the vehicle comes to a standstill, the warning tone is reactivated and the 7 seat belt warning lamp flashes again if the vehicle speed again exceeds 15 mph (25 km/h). The 7 seat belt warning lamp only goes out if: The ETDs do not correct incorrect seat positions or incorrectly fastened seat belts. The ETDs do not pull vehicle occupants back towards the backrest.
force exerted by the seat belt on the vehicle occupant is reduced. The seat belt force limiters for the front seats are synchronized with the front air bags, which take on a part of the deceleration force. This results in the force exerted on the occupant being distributed over a greater area. Always read and follow the manufacturer's instructions when using an infant or child restraint system or booster seat. Observe all warning signs in the vehicle interior and on the infant or child restraint.
Safety 60 Children in the vehicle lamp is illuminated, indicating that the front passenger front air bag is deactivated. RA child in a rear-facing child restraint on the front passenger seat will be seriously injured or even killed if the front passenger front air bag inflates in a collision which could occur under some circumstances, even with the air bag technology installed in your vehicle.
G WARNING G WARNING Infants and small children should never share a seat belt with another occupant. In the event of an accident, they could be crushed between the occupant and seat belt. A child's risk of serious or fatal injuries is significantly increased if the child restraints are not properly secured in the vehicle and/ or the child is not properly secured in the child restraint. Children that are too large for a child restraint must travel in seats using normal seat belts.
Children in the vehicle 62 Activating the special seat belt retractor: Pull the seat belt out fully and let the seat belt retractor retract it again. While the seat belt is retracting, you should hear a ratcheting sound. The special seat belt retractor is activated. X Push down on the child restraint system to take up any slack. Safety X Removing a child restraint system/ deactivating the special seat belt retractor: Always comply with the manufacturer's installation instructions.
63 Safety Children in the vehicle Vehicles with rear-seat through-loading facility X Install the LATCH-type (ISOFIX) child restraint system. Comply with the manufacturer's instructions when installing the LATCH-type (ISOFIX) child restraint system. Top Tether G WARNING Always lock the rear seat backrests in their upright position when the rear seats are occupied by passengers.
64 Children in the vehicle Child-proof locks Important safety notes vehicle is unlocked, the door can be opened from the outside. 192 Driving systems ATTENTION ASSIST Driving and parking Important safety notes ATTENTION ASSIST is only an aid to the driver. It might not always recognize fatigue or increasing inattentiveness in time or fail to recognize them at all. The system is not a substitute for a well-rested and attentive driver. ATTENTION ASSIST helps you during long, monotonous journeys, such as on highways. It is active in the range between 50 mph (80 km/h) and 112 mph (180 km/h).
Driving systems General notes Blind Spot Assist uses a radar sensor system to monitor the areas on both sides of your vehicle. It supports you from a speed of approximately 20 mph (30 km/h). A warning display in the exterior mirrors draws your attention to vehicles detected in the monitored area. If you then switch on the corresponding turn signal to change lanes, you will also receive a visual and audible collision warning. Blind Spot Assist uses sensors in the rear bumper for monitoring purposes.
194 Driving systems Due to the nature of the system: Driving and parking Rwarnings may be issued in error when driving close to crash barriers or similar solid lane borders. Rthe warning is canceled when driving for an extended period next to long vehicles, such as trucks. The two radar sensors for Blind Spot Assist are integrated into the sides of the rear bumper. Make sure that the bumper is free of dirt, ice or slush in the vicinity of the sensors.
Driving systems 195 The Lane Keeping Assist warning does not return the vehicle to the original lane. There is a risk of an accident. You should always steer, brake or accelerate yourself, in particular if warned by Lane Keeping Assist. : Active Lane Keeping Assist camera If you select km on the on-board computer in the Display Unit Speed-/Odometer function (Y page 215), Lane Keeping Assist is active starting at a speed of 60 km/h.

Adaptive When Adaptive is selected, no warning vibration occurs if: Ryou switch on the turn signals. In this event, the warnings are suppressed for a certain period of time. Ra driving safety system intervenes, e.g. ABS, BAS or ESP®.
Driving systems Active Blind Spot Assist may not detect narrow vehicles, such as motorcycles or bicycles, or may only detect them too late. Driving and parking This device has been approved by the FCC as a "Vehicular Radar System". The radar sensor is intended for use in an automotive radar system only. Removing, tampering with, or altering the device will void any warranties, and is not permitted by the FCC. Do not tamper with, alter, or use in any non-approved way.
198 Driving systems Driving and parking the bumpers, have the function of the sensors checked at a qualified specialist workshop. Blind Spot Assist may otherwise not work properly. Indicator and warning display Active Blind Spot Assist is not active at speeds below approximately 20 mph (30 km/h). Vehicles in the monitoring range are then not indicated.
Driving systems 199 Either a very slight course-correcting brake application, or none at all, may occur if: are vehicles or obstacles, e.g. crash barriers, located on both sides of your vehicle. Ra vehicle approaches you too closely at the side. Ryou have adopted a sporty driving style with high cornering speeds. Ryou clearly brake or accelerate.
