40 Occupant safety Vehicle equipment Safety i This manual describes all the standard and optional equipment of your vehicle which was available at the time of purchase. Country-specific differences are possible. Bear in mind that your vehicle may not feature all functions described here. This also refers to safety-related systems and functions. Occupant safety Overview of occupant safety In this section you will learn the most important facts about the restraint system components of the vehicle.
G Warning The SRS self-check has detected a malfunction if the 6 SRS warning lamp: Rdoes not come on at all to go out approximately 4 seconds after the engine was started Rcomes on after the engine was started or while driving For your safety, Mercedes-Benz strongly recommends that you have the system checked as soon as possible at an authorized Mercedes-Benz Center. Otherwise the SRS may not be activated when it is needed in an accident, which could result in serious or fatal injury.
42 Occupant safety Safety RNever place your feet on the instrument panel, dashboard, or on the seat. Always keep both feet on the floor in front of the seat. RImproper repair work on the SRS creates a risk of rendering the SRS inoperative or causing unintended air bag deployment. Work on the SRS must therefore only be performed by qualified technicians. Contact an authorized Mercedes-Benz Center.
Occupant safety hold the steering wheel by the rim. Placing hands and arms inside the rim can increase the risk and potential severity of hand/arm injury when the driver front air bag inflates. RAdjust the front-passenger seat as far back as possible from the dashboard when the seat is occupied. ROccupants, especially children, should never place their bodies or lean their heads in the area of the door or the rear side trim panel where the side impact air bag inflates.
Safety 44 Occupant safety belts regardless of whether your vehicle is equipped with air bags or not. It is important for your safety and that of your passenger to have deployed air bags replaced and to have any malfunctioning air bags repaired. This will help to make sure the air bags will continue to provide supplemental crash protection for occupants. Front air bags G Warning Observe "Important safety notes" (Y page 42).
Occupant safety When deployed, the side impact air bags offer additional protection for the thorax of the vehicle occupants on the side of the vehicle on which the impact occurs. However, they do not protect the: Safety Driver's knee bag = (Y page 44) increases protection for the driver against the risk of: Rknee injuries Rthigh injuries Rlower leg injuries Driver's knee bag = (Y page 44) inflates beneath the steering column.
Safety 46 Occupant safety seat belt is not fastened (the belt tongue is not engaged in the seat belt buckle), the side impact air bag on the front-passenger side will not deploy. The side impact air bag on the front-passenger side will deploy if the frontpassenger seat belt is fastened, regardless of whether the front-passenger seat is occupied or not. Window curtain air bags G Warning Observe "Important safety notes" (Y page 42).
accessories that have been approved by Mercedes-Benz. Both the driver and the front passenger should observe the 42 indicator lamp to determine whether or not the front passenger is positioned correctly. G Warning If the 42 indicator lamp lights up when an adult or someone larger than a small individual is in the front-passenger seat, have the front passenger reposition himself or herself in the seat until the 42 indicator lamp goes out.
Safety 48 Occupant safety recommended for the size and weight of the child. The infant or child restraint system must be properly secured with the vehicle's seat belt, the seat belt and Top Tether strap, or lower anchors and Top Tether strap, fully in accordance with the child seat manufacturer's instructions.
Occupant safety 49 System self-test The 42 indicator lamp illuminates when you: the SmartKey to position 1 or 2 in the ignition lock Rpress the KEYLESS-GO Start/Stop button once or twice If an adult occupant is properly sitting on the passenger seat and the OCS classifies the occupant as an adult, the 42 indicator lamp illuminates and goes out again after approximately 6 seconds.
50 Occupant safety Safety Problems with the occupant classification system Problem Possible causes/consequences and M Solutions The 42 indicator lamp illuminates and remains illuminated. The person sitting on the front-passenger seat: OCS is malfunctioning. X Have OCS checked as soon as possible at an authorized Mercedes-Benz Center. X Observe the additional display messages in the multifunction display (Y page 348).
Occupant safety G Warning The PRE-SAFE® system reduces the impact of an accident on vehicle occupants, as long as their seat belts have been fastened correctly. Although your vehicle is equipped with a PRESAFE® system, the possibility of injury in the event of an accident cannot be ruled out. You should therefore always drive carefully and adapt your driving style to the prevailing road, weather and traffic conditions.
Safety 52 Occupant safety seat belt properly buckled. Without your seat belt buckled, you are much more likely to hit the interior of the vehicle or be ejected from it. You can be seriously injured or killed. In the same crash, the possibility of injury or death is lessened if you are properly wearing your seat belt. The air bags can only protect as intended if the occupants are properly wearing their seat belts.
portion of the seat belt under your arm. For this purpose, you can adjust the height of the seat belt outlet. RPosition the lap belt as low as possible on your hips and not across the abdomen. If the lap belt is positioned across your abdomen, it could cause serious injuries in a crash. RNever wear seat belts over rigid or breakable objects in or on your clothing, such as eyeglasses, pens, keys etc., as these might cause injuries. RMake sure the seat belt is always fitted snugly.
Occupant safety 54 Safety X Adjust the seat and move the backrest to an almost vertical position (Y page 92). X Pull the seat belt smoothly through belt sash guide :. X Without twisting it, guide the shoulder section of the seat belt across the middle of your shoulder and the lap section across your hips. X Engage belt tongue ; in buckle =. 438 Mode Vehicle equipment i This manual describes all the standard and optional equipment of your vehicle which was available at the time of purchase. Country-specific differences are possible. Bear in mind that your vehicle may not feature all functions described here. This also refers to safety-related systems and functions. Important safety notes Contact an authorized Mercedes-Benz Center if you require information on tested and recommended tires and wheels for summer and winter driving.
Mode RRegularly check the wheels and tires of your vehicle for damage (e.g. cuts, punctures, tears, bulges on tires and deformation or severe corrosion on wheels), at least at least once a month, as well as after driving off-road or on rough roads. Damaged wheels can cause a loss of tire pressure. RRegularly check the tire tread depth and the condition of the tread across the whole width of the tire (Y page 439).
440 Winter operation surfaces decreases significantly when the tread depth is less than 1/8 in (3 mm). RReplace the tires after six years at the latest, regardless of wear. This also applies to the emergency spare wheel/spare wheel. The service life of tires depends, among other things, on the following factors: Rdriving style pressure Rmileage Rtire Winter operation Once you have installed the winter tires: X X Check the tire pressures (Y page 444). Restart the tire pressure monitor (Y page 445).
Tire pressure Ryou may not attach snow chains to all wheel-tire combinations; see the "Tires and wheels" section in the "Technical data" chapter. Rmount snow chains only in pairs and only on the rear wheels. Observe the manufacturer's installation instructions. ! If snow chains are mounted on the front wheels, the snow chains could grind against the bodywork or components of the chassis. This could result in damage to the vehicle or the tires.
442 Tire pressure operating conditions. If you check the tire pressure when the tires are warm, the reading will be higher than if the tires were cold. This is normal. Do not reduce the tire pressure to the value specified for cold tires. The tire pressure would otherwise be too low. Observe the recommended tire pressure specifications for cold tires on the Tire and Loading Information placard on the B-pillar on the driver's side.
Tire pressure 443 Tire pressure table for all approved tires installed at the factory (example) Tire pressure too low or too high Underinflated tires G Warning Follow recommended tire inflation pressures. Do not underinflate tires. Underinflated tires wear excessively and/or unevenly, adversely affect handling and fuel economy, and are more likely to fail from being overheated.
444 Tire pressure Radversely Rincrease affect ride comfort stopping distance Maximum tire pressure G Warning Tires and wheels Never exceed the maximum tire inflation pressure. Follow recommended tire inflation pressures. Do not underinflate tires. Underinflated tires wear excessively and/or unevenly, adversely affect handling and fuel economy, and are more likely to fail from being overheated. Do not overinflate tires.
check the tire pressure again using the tire pressure gauge. X Screw the valve cap onto the valve. X Repeat the steps for the other tires. Tire pressure monitor Important safety notes If a tire pressure monitor is installed, the vehicle's wheels have sensors installed that monitor the tire pressures in all four tires. The tire pressure monitor warns you when the pressure drops in one or more of the tires.
446 Tire pressure Tires and wheels If the tire pressure monitor is malfunctioning, it may take more than 10 minutes for the tire pressure warning lamp to inform you of the malfunction by flashing for 60 seconds and then remaining lit. When the malfunction has been rectified, the tire pressure warning lamp goes out after driving for a few minutes. This device complies with the RSS-210 Rules from Industry Canada. Operation is subject to the following two conditions: 1.
TPMS warning messages If the tire pressure monitor detects a significant pressure loss on one or more tires, a warning message is shown in the multifunction display. A warning tone also sounds and the tire pressure warning lamp lights up in the instrument cluster. For each tire that is affected by a significant loss of pressure, the tire pressure is shown in yellow.
448 Loading the vehicle Loading the vehicle Instruction labels for tires and loads G Warning Do not overload the tires by exceeding the specified load limit as indicated on the Tire and Loading Information placard on the driver's door B-pillar. Overloading the tires can overheat them, possibly causing a blowout. Overloading the tires can also result in handling or steering problems, or brake failure. Tires and wheels Two instruction labels on your vehicle show the maximum possible load.
Loading the vehicle 449 Number of seats i The details on the Tire and Loading Information placard illustration are only an example. The number of seats is vehiclespecific and can differ from the details shown. The number of seats in your vehicle can be found on the Tire and Loading Information placard. Tires and wheels Maximum number of seats : determines the maximum number of occupants allowed to travel in the vehicle. This information can be found on the Tire and Loading Information placard.
450 Loading the vehicle Tires and wheels Determining the maximum load The following steps have been developed as required of all manufacturers under Title 49, Code of U.S. Federal Regulations, Part 575 pursuant to the "National Traffic and Motor Vehicle Safety Act of 1966". X Step 1: Locate the statement "The combined weight of occupants and cargo should never exceed XXX kg or XXX lbs." on your vehicle's Tire and Loading Information placard.
Step 3 Example 1 Example 2 Example 3 Weight of the occupants Occupant 1: 150 lbs (68 kg) Occupant 2: 180 lbs (82 kg) Occupant 3: 160 lbs (73 kg) Occupant 4: 140 lbs (63 kg) Occupant 5: 120 lbs (54 kg) Occupant 1: 200 lbs (91 kg) Occupant 2: 190 lbs (86 kg) Occupant 3: 150 lbs (68 kg) Occupant 1: 150 lbs (68 kg) Gross weight of all occupants 750 lbs (340 kg) 540 lbs (245 kg) 150 lbs (68 kg) Permissible cargo and trailer load/ noseweight (maximum gross vehicle weight rating from the Tire and Loading
452 Uniform Tire Quality Grading Standards Trailer load/noseweight The trailer load/noseweight affects the gross weight of the vehicle. If a trailer is attached, the trailer load/noseweight is included in the load along with occupants and luggage. The trailer load/noseweight is usually approximately 10% of the gross weight of the trailer and its cargo. Your Mercedes-Benz is designed for transporting persons and their luggage. Mercedes-Benz does not recommend towing a trailer with your vehicle.
Tire labeling The tread wear grade is a comparative rating based on the wear rate of the tire when tested under controlled conditions on a specified U.S. government test track. For example, a tire graded 150 would wear one and one-half times as well on the government test track as a tire graded 100.
