Safety and Security Occupant safety In this section you will learn the most important facts about the restraint systems of the vehicle.
Safety and Security Occupant safety Warning! G In the event that the 1 indicator lamp comes on during driving or does not come on at all, the SRS self-check has detected a malfunction.
Safety and Security Occupant safety Warning! G 앫 Adjust the driver’s seat as far as possible rearward, still permitting proper operation of vehicle controls. The distance from the center of the driver’s breastbone to the center of the air bag cover on the steering wheel must be at least ten inches (25 cm) or more. You should be able to accomplish this by a combination of adjustments to the seat and steering wheel. If you have any problems, please see an authorized Mercedes-Benz Light Truck Center.
Safety and Security Occupant safety Warning! G Accident research shows that the safest place for children in an automobile is in the rear seat. It should be noted that with respect to both front and rear side impact air bags there is a possibility for a side impact air bag related injury if occupants, especially children, are not properly seated or restrained when next to a side impact air bag which needs to deploy rapidly in a side impact in order to do its job.
Safety and Security Occupant safety We caution you not to rely on the presence of the air bags in order to avoid wearing your seat belt. It is important to your safety and that of your passengers that you replace deployed air bags and repair any malfunctioning air bags to make sure the vehicle will continue to provide supplemental crash protection for occupants.
Safety and Security Occupant safety 앫 Never place your feet on the instrument panel, dashboard, or on the seat. Always keep both feet on the floor in front of the seat. 앫 In addition, improper repair work on the SRS creates a risk of rendering the SRS inoperative or causing unintended air bag deployment. Work on the SRS must therefore only be performed by qualified technicians. Contact an authorized Mercedes-Benz Light Truck Center.
Safety and Security Occupant safety i The front air bags in this vehicle have been designed to inflate in two stages. This allows the air bag to have different rates of inflation that are based on the rate of relevant vehicle deceleration as assessed by the air bag control unit. On the front passenger-side, the front air bag deployment is additionally influenced by the passenger’s weight category as identified by the Occupant Classification System (OCS) (컄 page 81).
Safety and Security Occupant safety In addition, the window curtain air bags 2 are deployed in certain vehicle rollovers. The front passenger side impact air bag 1 will not deploy if the OCS senses that the front passenger seat is empty and the front passenger seat belt is not fastened (latch plate is not insert into the buckle).
Safety and Security Occupant safety Warning! G Never ride in a moving vehicle with the seat backrest in an excessively reclined position as this can be dangerous. You could slide under the seat belt in a collision. If you slide under it, the belt would apply force at the abdomen or neck. That could cause serious or even fatal injuries. The seat backrest and seat belt provide the best restraint when the wearer is in a nearly upright position and the belt is properly positioned on the body.
Safety and Security Occupant safety certain rollovers (window curtain air bags and ETD). 앫 Never wear the shoulder belt under your arm, against your neck or off your shoulder. In a frontal crash, your body would move too far forward. That would increase the chance of head and neck injuries. The belt would also apply too much force to the ribs or abdomen, which could severely injure internal organs such as your liver or spleen.
Safety and Security Occupant safety exceeded 15 mph (25 km/h) if either the driver’s or front passenger’s seat belt remains unfastened. If the driver’s or front passenger’s seat belt remains unfastened after 60 seconds, the seat belt telltale < stops flashing and the warning chime stops sounding. The seat belt telltale < then continues to be illuminated for as long as either the driver’s or front passenger’s seat belt are not fastened.
Safety and Security Occupant safety Preventive occupant safety* (PRE-SAFE)® 앫 G Warning! i In such cases, the following systems are automatically activated: ® The PRE-SAFE system is intended to reduce the effects of an accident on properly seat-belted vehicle occupants. Despite having the PRE-SAFE® system in your vehicle, the possibility of injuries occurring as a result of an accident cannot be eliminated.
Safety and Security Occupant safety Children in the vehicle Infant and child restraint systems i If an infant or child is traveling with you in the vehicle: We recommend all infants and children be properly restrained at all times while the vehicle is in motion. Information on child seats with mounting fittings for tether anchorages (컄 page 87). All lap-shoulder belts except the driver’s seat belt have special seat belt retractors for secure fastening of child restraints.
Safety and Security Occupant safety Warning! G Never release the seat belt buckle while the vehicle is in motion, since the special seat belt retractor will be deactivated. A statement by the child restraint manufacturer of compliance with this standard can be found on the instruction label on the restraint and in the instruction manual provided with the restraint.
Safety and Security Occupant safety 컄컄 앫 80 If you must install a rear-facing child restraint on the front passenger seat because circumstances require you to do so, make sure that the 59 indicator lamp is illuminated, indicating that the front passenger front air bag is deactivated. Should the 59 indicator lamp not illuminate or go out while the restraint is installed, please check installation. Periodically check the 59 indicator lamp while driving to make sure the lamp is illuminated.
Safety and Security Occupant safety When the child restraint is not in use, remove it from the vehicle or secure it with the seat belt to prevent the child restraint from becoming a projectile in the event of an accident. Do not leave children unattended in the vehicle, even if the children are secured in a child restraint system. Unsupervised children in a child restraint system may use vehicle equipment and may cause an accident and/or serious personal injury.
Safety and Security Occupant safety Warning! G If the 59 indicator lamp illuminates when an adult or someone larger than a small individual is in the front passenger seat, have the front passenger re-position himself or herself in the seat until the 59 indicator lamp goes out, or check whether objects are caught under or around the seat. More information about air bag display messages (컄 page 401).
Safety and Security Occupant safety If the 59 indicator lamp is illuminated, the front passenger front air bag is deactivated and will not be deployed. If the 59 indicator lamp is not illuminated, the front passenger front air bag is activated and will be deployed: 앫 in the event of certain frontal impacts 앫 if impact exceeds a preset deployment threshold 앫 independently of the side impact air bags.
Safety and Security Occupant safety 컄컄 앫 84 If you must install a rear-facing child restraint on the front passenger seat because circumstances require you to do so, make sure that the 59 indicator lamp is illuminated, indicating that the front passenger front air bag is deactivated. Should the 59 not illuminate or go out while the restraint is installed, please check installation. Periodically check the 59 indicator lamp while driving to make sure the 59 indicator lamp is illuminated.
Safety and Security Occupant safety 앫 that the seat was occupied by a small individual (such as a young teenager or a small adult) or a child weighing more than the weight of a typical 12-month-old child in a standard child restraint - instances where the system may suppress deployment of the front passenger front air bag even though the impact met the criteria and was of sufficient severity to deploy the driver front air bag. The 59 indicator lamp is located in the center console.
Safety and Security Occupant safety 컄컄 앫 Do not place objects under and/or around the front passenger seat. 앫 Do not hang anything from or attach any items to the seats. 앫 Do not stuff objects such as books between the middle console and the front passenger seat. 앫 Do not move the front passenger seat backwards against stiff objects. 앫 Sit properly belted in a nearly upright position with your back against the seat backrest.
Safety and Security Occupant safety Installation of infant and child restraint system 왘 This vehicle is equipped with tether anchorages for a top tether strap at each of the rear seating positions. 왘 i Guide top tether strap between head restraint and top of seat back. For safety, make sure the hook has attached to the ring beyond the safety catch, as illustrated.
Safety and Security Occupant safety Child seat anchors – LATCH type i This vehicle is equipped with two LATCH (Lower Anchors and Tethers for CHildren) type anchors (at each of the outer rear seats) for the installation of a LATCH child seat with matching mounting fittings. Non-LATCH type child seats may also be used and can be installed using the vehicle’s seat belt system. Install child seat according to the manufacturer’s instructions.
Safety and Security Occupant safety Warning! G Children too big for a toddler restraint must ride in seats using regular seat belts. Position shoulder belt across chest and shoulder, not face or neck. A booster seat may be necessary to achieve proper belt positioning for children from 41 lbs until they reach a height where a lap/shoulder belt fits properly without a booster. Blocking of rear door window operation You can block the rear door window operation (e.g.
Safety and Security Occupant safety Warning! G Activate the override switch when children are riding in the back seats of the vehicle. The children may otherwise injure themselves, e.g. by becoming trapped in the window opening. When leaving the vehicle, always remove the SmartKey or SmartKey with KEYLESS-GO* from the starter switch, take it with you, and lock the vehicle. Do not leave children unattended in the vehicle, or with access to an unlocked vehicle.

Operation Driving instructions 왔 Driving instructions Drive sensibly – save fuel Fuel consumption, to a great extent, depends on driving habits and operating conditions. Fuel consumption is also increased by driving in cold weather, in stop-and-go traffic, on short trips and in hilly areas. Pedals Warning! G Drinking and driving To save fuel you should: G 앫 Keep tires at the recommended inflation pressures. Warning! 앫 Remove unnecessary loads. 앫 Remove roof rack when not in use.
Operation Driving instructions Brakes Warning! G After driving in heavy rain for some time without applying the brakes or through water deep enough to wet brake components, the first braking action may be somewhat reduced and increased pedal pressure may be necessary to obtain expected braking effect. Maintain a safe distance from vehicles in front.
Operation Driving instructions ! When driving down long and steep grades, relieve the load on the brakes by shifting into a lower gear to use the engine’s braking power. This helps prevent overheating of the brakes and reduces brake pad wear. After hard braking, it is advisable to drive on for some time, rather than immediately park, so that the air stream will cool down the brakes faster. Driving off Apply the brakes to test them briefly after driving off.
Operation Driving instructions 컄컄 앫 Turn the SmartKey to starter switch position 0 and remove, or press KEYLESS-GO* start/stop button (vehicles with KEYLESS-GO*). 앫 Take the SmartKey or the SmartKey with KEYLESS-GO* with you and lock vehicle when leaving. Operation Tires and wheels Recommended tire inflation pressure Warning! G Follow recommended tire inflation pressures. Do not underinflate tires. Underinflated tires wear excessively and/or unevenly, adversely affect handling and fuel economy, and are more likely to fail from being overheated. Do not overinflate tires.
Operation Tires and wheels Placard (Example A) lists the recommended cold tire inflation pressures for maximum loaded vehicle weight. The tire inflation pressures listed apply to the tires installed as original equipment. Placard (Example B) Important notes on tire inflation pressure Warning! G If the tire inflation pressure repeatedly drops: 앫 Check the tires for punctures from foreign objects. 앫 Check to see whether air is leaking from the valves or from around the rim.
Operation Tires and wheels Checking tire inflation pressure Warning! Regularly check your tire inflation pressure at least once a month. Check and adjust the tire inflation pressure when the tires are cold. The tires can be considered cold if the vehicle has been parked for at least three hours or driven less than one mile (1.6 km).
Operation Tires and wheels 컄컄 i Run Flat Indicator If you have overfilled the tire, release tire inflation pressure by pushing the metal stem of the valve with e.g. a tip of a pen. Then recheck the tire inflation pressure with the tire gauge. While the vehicle is being driven, the Run Flat Indicator monitors the set tire inflation pressures by evaluating each wheel’s rotational speed. This allows the system to detect a significant loss of pressure in a tire.
Operation Tires and wheels i The recommended tire inflation pressures for your vehicle can be found on the tire placard located on the driver’s door B-pillar (컄 page 339). The tire inflation pressures are not listed in the owner’s manual. Warning! G The Run Flat Indicator does not indicate a warning for wrongly selected tire inflation pressures. Always adjust tire inflation pressure according to the placard on the driver’s door B-pillar or fuel filler flap.
Operation Tires and wheels Reactivating the Run Flat Indicator 왘 The tire inflation pressure monitor must be reactivated in the following situations: 앫 If you have changed the tire inflation pressure 앫 If you have replaced the wheels or tires 앫 If you have installed new wheels or tires 왘 Using the tire placard on the driver’s door B-pillar or, if available, the inside of the fuel filler flap, make sure the tire inflation pressure of all four tires is correct.
Operation Tires and wheels Checking tire pressure electronically with the Advanced Tire Pressure Monitoring System* (Advanced TPMS*) i The Advanced Tire Pressure Monitoring System* (Advanced TPMS*) is equipped with a combination low tire pressure/TPMS malfunction telltale in the instrument cluster (컄 page 24).
Operation Tires and wheels Warning! G The TPMS does not indicate a warning for wrongly selected inflation pressures. Always adjust tire inflation pressure according to the placard on the driver’s door B-pillar or, if available, the supplemental tire pressure information on the inside of the fuel filler flap. The TPMS is not able to issue a warning due to a sudden dramatic loss of pressure (e.g. tire blowout caused by a foreign object).
Operation Tires and wheels i Reactivating Advanced TPMS* i If a condition causing the TPMS to malfunction develops, it may take up to 10 minutes for the system to signal a malfunction using the TPMS telltale flashing and illumination sequence. The TPMS must be reactivated when you have adjusted the tire inflation pressure to a new level (e.g. because of different load or driving conditions). The TPMS is then recalibrated to the current tire inflation pressures.
Operation Tires and wheels 컄컄왘 Press the j or k button repeatedly until you see the current inflation pressures for each tire appear in the display or the following message appears in the display Tire pressure display appears after driving several minutes 왘 Press the reset button (컄 page 24). The following message will appear in the multifunction display: Check current tire pressure? 왘 Press the æ button.
Operation Tires and wheels Tire labeling Besides tire name (sales designation) and manufacturer name, a number of markings can be found on a tire.
Operation Tires and wheels General: Tire width Rim diameter Depending on the design standards used, the tire size molded into the sidewall may have no letter or a letter preceding the tire size designation. The tire width 1 (컄 page 355) indicates the nominal tire width in mm. The rim diameter 4 (컄 page 355) is the diameter of the bead seat, not the diameter of the rim edge. Rim diameter is indicated in inches (in).
Operation Tires and wheels Warning! G The tire load rating must always be at least half of the GAWR (컄 page 365) of your vehicle. Otherwise, tire failure may be the result which may cause an accident and/or serious personal injury to you or others. Always replace rims and tires with the same designation, manufacturer and type as shown on the original part. Warning! G Do not overload the tires by exceeding the specified load limit as indicated on the placard located on the driver’s door B-pillar.
Operation Tires and wheels Summer tires Index Speed rating Q up to 100 mph (160 km/h) R up to 106 mph (170 km/h) S up to 112 mph (180 km/h) T up to 118 mph (190 km/h) H up to 130 mph (210 km/h) V up to 149 mph (240 km/h) W up to 168 mph (270 km/h) Y up to 186 mph (300 km/h) (Y) above 186 mph (300 km/h) ZR above 149 mph (240 km/h) 앫 At the tire manufacturer’s option, any tire with a speed capability above 149 mph (240 km/h) can include a “ZR” in the size designation (for example: 245/4
Operation Tires and wheels i Not all M+S rated tires provide special winter performance. Make sure the tires you use show M+S and the mountain/snowflake.marking on the tire sidewall. These tires meet specific snow traction performance requirements of the Rubber Manufacturers Association (RMA) and the Rubber Association of Canada (RAC) and have been designed specifically for use in snow conditions.
Operation Tires and wheels DOT, Tire Identification Number (TIN) DOT (Department of Transportation) A tire branding symbol 1 (컄 page 360) which denotes the tire meets requirements of the U.S. Department of Transportation. U.S. tire regulations require each new tire manufacturer or tire retreader to mold a TIN into or onto a sidewall of each tire produced.
Operation Tires and wheels Tire type code Maximum tire load Warning! The code 4 (컄 page 360) may, at the option of the manufacturer, be used as a descriptive code for identifying significant characteristics of the tire. Do not overload the tires by exceeding the specified load limit as indicated on the placard located on the driver’s door B-pillar. Overloading the tires can overheat them, possibly causing a blowout. Overloading the tires can also result in handling or steering problems, or brake failure.
Operation Tires and wheels Maximum tire inflation pressure Always follow the recommended tire inflation pressure (컄 page 345) for proper tire inflation. Warning! G Never exceed the max. tire inflation pressure. Follow recommended tire inflation pressures. 1 Maximum permissible tire inflation pressure i For illustration purposes only. Actual data on tires are specific to each vehicle and may vary from data shown in above illustration. This is the maximum permissible tire inflation pressure for the tire.
Operation Tires and wheels Quality grades can be found, where applicable, on the tire sidewall between tread shoulder and maximum section width. For example: Treadwear Traction Temperature 200 AA A All passenger car tires must conform to federal safety requirements in addition to these grades. Treadwear Traction The treadwear grade is a comparative rating based on the wear rate of the tire when tested under controlled conditions on a specified government test course.
Operation Tires and wheels Temperature The temperature grades are A (the highest), B, and C, representing the tire’s resistance to the generation of heat and its ability to dissipate heat when tested under controlled conditions on a specified indoor laboratory test wheel. Sustained high temperature can cause the material of the tire to degenerate and reduce tire life, and excessive temperature can lead to sudden tire failure.
Operation Tires and wheels Tire and loading terminology Accessory weight The combined weight (in excess of those standard items which may be replaced) of automatic transmission, power steering, power brakes, power windows, power seats, radio, and heater, to the extent that these items are available as factory-installed equipment (whether installed or not).
