Send and receive data
• Ensure that the IR ports of the sending and receiving devices are pointing at
each other and that there are no obstructions between the devices.
• To activate the IR port of your phone, select Menu > Settings > Connectivity >
Infrared.
• The user of the sending phone selects the desired IR function to start data
transfer.
If the data transfer is not started within 2 minutes after the activation of the IR
port, the connection is cancelled and has to be started again.
Connecting icon
When blinks continuously, the IR connection has been activated and your
phone is ready to send or receive data using its IR port.
The IR connector deactivates automatically.
■ GPRS and EGPRS
GPRS (general packet radio service) is a network service that allows mobile
phones to be used for sending and receiving data over an Internet protocol
(IP)-based network.
EGPRS (enhanced GPRS), also known as EDGE (enhanced data rates for global
evolution), is similar to GPRS. For more information on the availability of EGPRS
and data transfer speed, contact your service provider.
When you have selected GPRS as a data bearer, the phone uses EGPRS instead of
GPRS if it is available in the network. You cannot select between EGPRS and
GPRS in your phone, but for some applications, you may be able to select either
GPRS or GSM data (CSD—circuit switched data) as the data bearer. The data
bearer is part of the preferred access point and can be changed in Configuration
settings (see ”Configuration settings” on page 64 ).
The applications that may use GPRS are MMS, instant messaging, browsing
sessions, e-mail, remote SyncML, Java application downloading, and the PC
dial-up (for example, Internet and e-mail).
Before you can use GPRS technology, contact your service provider for
availability of and subscription to the GPRS service and save the GPRS settings
for each of the applications used over GPRS.
