PREP STEP 1 For the truest color and a finish that lasts, it’s important to prepare the surface. 1. Start with bare wood that’s in good condition. Exceptions: Minwax® PolyShades® finish, which lets you stain over existing stain and Minwax Gel Stain, which lets you stain even non-porous materials like fiberglass and metal. 2. STAIN STEP 2 1. Start by stirring the stain (but don’t shake it). This keeps the pigment from settling into the bottom of the can. 2. Because wood species can affect final color, pre-test color in a hidden spot, applying with the wood grain and wiping off per label directions. 3. Apply stain in the direction of the wood grain. 4. Wait for stain to soak in. The label will tell you how long to wait. (If you decide to do a second coat, leave it on this long again to assure even color.) 5.
PROTECT STEP 3 SHOP FOR: Every project deserves a protective topcoat to keep it safe from life’s bumps and bruises. Choose oil-based protection for oil-based stain projects and water-based protection for water-based stain projects. Exception: On lighter colored woods and light or cool colors of stains (like gray and blue) use water-based protection — even when the stain is oil-based — to best maintain your original color.
