WOOD GUIDE WOOD GUIDE How will your wood react to stain? All woods have two characteristics that determine their final appearance: their natural color and their pore size. Because stain is absorbed into the wood, as opposed to resting on top of it, these two characteristics determine the final look of the piece after the stain has been applied. Be sure to test stain products in an inconspicuous place to get an idea of what the final results will look like. This guide will get you started.
STEP 1: PREP STEP 2: STAIN • Inspect and repair your project surface. Make note of any holes, cracks, splits or loose joints that need to be repaired. Use Minwax® Stainable Wood Filler to fill small holes and cracks. For weak joints or boards, tighten screws, replace wood or add braces. Pick the right stain for you. The type of stain you use is a matter of personal preference. Here are some things to keep in mind: • Remove all hardware from the item. This will prevent metal discoloration.
STEP 2: STAIN • Applying additional coats. To achieve a darker, richer color, apply a second coat according to label instructions. • Let the stain dry. Don’t move on to Step 3 (Protect) until the stain has dried completely. Reference the product label for dry times. STEP 3: PROTECT Whether you choose to stain your wood or not, you must apply a protective finish. It will add richness and depth while protecting it from nicks, scrapes, spills, and everyday wear and tear.
STEP 3: PROTECT • Choose your sheen. Whether you choose gloss, semi-gloss or satin, there will be no difference in durability. However, the glossier the finish, the more it will show underlying imperfections and future wear and tear. • Choose the right applicator. Every clear, protective finish has its preferred applicator, so be sure to reference the product label. • Brush-ons are best for flat surfaces that need a durable film (e.g., tabletops).
WOOD CARE MAINTENANCE Stained and treated wood will last for decades if it’s well taken care of. Here are a few clever products that will help maintain your wood’s beauty for years to come. Disguise Nicks and Scratches Use Minwax® Wood Finish™ Stain Markers for touch-ups and minor scratches on hardwood floors, stairs, railings, moldings, kitchen cabinet doors and drawers. Fix Nail Holes Use Minwax® Wood Putty® to disguise nail holes left in furniture, molding and trim.

PASO 1: PREPARACIÓN PASO 2: TEÑIR • Revise y repare la superficie del proyecto. Verifique si hay orificios, grietas, aperturas o juntas sueltas que deban repararse. Esto distribuirá de manera pareja los pigmentos y los demás componentes que se hayan decantado. Siempre retire el excedente de tinte.
PASO 3: PROTEGER • Elija el brillo. Aunque elija brillante, semibrillante o satinado, la duración será la misma. Sin embargo, cuanto más brillante sea, más mostrará las imperfecciones de la madera y el desgaste cotidiano. • Elija el aplicador adecuado. Cada acabado protector transparente tiene un aplicador recomendado, por lo que debe consultar la etiqueta del producto. • Los fluidos son mejores para superficies planas que necesitan una capa duradera (como los mesones).
