How to Guide

STEP 3: PROTECT
NOTES:
Don’t use rollers!
They create air bubbles.
Choose the right materials.
Avoid thinners, tack cloths, waxes and
steel wool. Stick to recommended materials
for best results.
Work from a separate container.
Dipping directly into the can will
contaminate the finish with dust and
other particles.
Tap, don’t wipe.
Wiping brush bristles against the side of
the container will leave the brush too dry.

Choose your sheen. Whether you choose gloss,
semi-gloss or satin, there will be no difference in
durability. However, the glossier the finish, the more
it will show underlying imperfections and future
wear and tear.
Choose the right applicator. Every clear, protective
finish has its preferred applicator, so be sure to
reference the product label.
Brush-ons are best for flat surfaces that need a
durable film (e.g., tabletops).
Wipe-ons are best for contoured surfaces where
heavy wear isn’t a concern (e.g., furniture legs).
Aerosols are best for hard-to-reach surfaces
(e.g., chair spindles).
Select the right brush. Use natural-bristle brushes for
oil-based finishes and synthetic-bristle brushes for
water-based and water-based oil-modified finishes.
Go with the grain. This will give an even appearance.
Apply quick, thin coats. Too much brushing
or coats that are too thick will cause wrinkling
and other problems when dry.
Sand and wipe between coats. 220-grit sandpaper
will ensure good adhesion and smooth away
imperfections. Wipe away dust with a damp cloth.
STEP 3: PROTECT
NOTE:
Most polyurethanes are for interior use only.
To protect exterior projects, use Minwax®
Helmsman® Spar Urethane. It provides
long-lasting protection against sunlight,
water and temperature changes.
