Nintendo 3DS NFC Reader/Writer
Operations Manual
This accessory is only for use with Nintendo 3DS or Nintendo 3DS XL
systems.
NOTE: Before using an amiibo™ or other NFC-supported devices with this accessory, read
the Nintendo 3DS/Nintendo 3DS XL Operations Manual, the instructions for the amiibo or
other NFC-supported device, and the intructions for the game you are playing for information
on using these products.
Be sure to carefully read Health and Safety Information and Usage Guidelines in the
Nintendo 3DS or 3DS XL Operations Manual. Failure to do so may result in injury or damage
to your system. If this product will be used by young children, this manual should be read
and explained to them by an adult.
Also read the built-in Health and Safety information on your system by tapping
when
the HOME Menu is displayed on the Touch Screen.

Installing Batteries
NOTE: A parent or guardian should install or replace the batteries if a child is using
this product.
This accessory uses 2 AA alkaline batteries.
Remove the battery cover and insert the batteries negative end first, as shown in the
illustration. When replacing the batteries, remove the positive end first.
When installing the battery cover, insert the edge with the two tabs first and then press the
cover into its recess until it clicks into place.
NOTE: Battery life will vary depending on the frequency of communication and the operat-
ing environment, such as temperature.

Usage Instructions
Make sure wireless communication is enabled on the Nintendo 3DS system. Place your
Nintendo 3DS system and the reader/writer on a flat, level surface.
Follow the on-screen instructions for the game you are playing and touch an amiibo or other
NFC-supported device to the NFC area. This will allow data to be written or read.
NOTE: The Nintendo 3DS/Nintendo 3DS XL system may need a system or software update in
order to use the NFC reader/writer.
Press the POWER Button.
The power indicator LED will turn on blue.
The LED will turn red when the battery power is
getting low.
The accessory will turn o automatically after 5
minutes of inactivity.
Orient your system to the reader/writer as shown below.
The power indicator LED will blink when the NFC reader/writer is correctly facing the
Nintendo 3DS infrared transceiver and communicating with the system.

Troubleshooting
If this accessory fails to operate correctly, check the following conditions before seeking
assistance. If it still does not operate correctly after trying the troubleshooting steps, visit
support.nintendo.com for assistance and additional troubleshooting and repair options or
call 1-800-255-3700.
The accessory does not turn on:
Make sure the batteries are installed correctly.
Make sure the batteries are not depleted.
Unable to read or write data:
Make sure the software you are using supports NFC devices. Check the game
packaging and look for this icon for support of this feature:
Make sure that your system has wireless communication enabled and that your system
and the reader/writer are oriented correctly and placed the correct distance from each
other.
Make sure you are correctly using the NFC-compatible product with the software. Review
the instructions for the software you are using for details on using NFC-compatible
products.
Make sure you are touching the NFC-compatible product to the center of the NFC area. Do
not move the NFC-compatible product while writing or reading data.
Make sure you are using the correct NFC-compatible product with the software you are
using. Visit support.nintendo.com/3ds/amiibo for more information.
Make sure that there is nothing inferfering with infrared communication, such as direct
sunlight or other sources of stong light, heat, or electromagnetic energy.
Make sure the IR transceivers are not dirty. Clean with a soft cloth if necessary.
NOTE: After infrared communication is inactive for a certain period of time (5 minutes after
turning the power on or approximately 90 minutes after finishing communication), the
power will automatically turn off.
