HOW TO OB TAIN A PROFESSIO NAL F INISH
BEFORE YOU PA IN T / STA I N
1. Inspect th e door and sand imperfect ions as needed. Fo r wo od or veneer do ors, ens ure
to always sand with the grain. Use wood putty to fill holes and wood imperfections.
When using wo od putty ensure it is dry and sanded prior to painting or staining.
2. Doo rs w ith glass h ave a protective film on the glass. If any por tio n of th e glass is
exposed, use masking tape or painters tape to c over the area. Do no t remove
protective film until door is painted or stained
3. Wipe door down removing dust and dirt w ith a tac k clo th to ensure a dust free finish.
4. P aint in following order fo r doo r type. If you are not using a stain with a sealer an
additional sealer w ill be needed on t op of th e stain to seal t he doo r. Co nsult y our st ain
supplier and follow the manufacturer's instructions.

1. Finish doors with the doo r laying h orizontal on a bench or wor khorse. Spraying is
recommended for uniform results .
2. R emo ve any excess paint or stain from the corners of the panels or lite grilles by
feat hering with a dry 1" brush.
3. Allow paint/stain to dry thoro ughly before applying a seco nd coat . Consu lt th e paint
manufac turers instruct io ns for drying times. Sand in-betw een coats . Do not sand the
final t opcoat.
4. All six sides of th e door must be sealed.
5. After th e door is painted or stained and
completely dry,
inst all hardw are.
6. French doors or doors with glass: Remove
protective
film immediately after finishing the do or. Use a
sharp
blade or utility knife to cut away the protective
plastic
film leaving clean edges around th e lites. Use
protective
gloves during this proc ess.
7. If finish ing mor e than one doo r, c omplete one
door and evaluate the finish before finish ing
multiple do ors.

Deliver do ors to the building sit e after the plaster, dryw all and/or c oncr et e are dry.
Store flat on a level surfac e in a clean, dry , w el l ventilated building. Protect from dirt,
water and abuse. Allow air circulation. Cover t he top door w ith a moisture bar rier.
Doors should not be subjected to abnormal o r sudden variatio ns in heat, dryness or
humidity . Reco mmended h umidity and t emperature are 25% 55% R H and 50°F 90°F
(10°C 32 °C).
Doors should be s tored at least 10 ' away from any heat sourc e. Excessive heat on a
door creates uneven drying which results in war ping, splitting, and bow ing o n the door
surfaces.
