Doors should be acclimatized to the average prevailing h umidity and temperat ure
befo re hanging for at least 48 hours. In below-z er o or ex treme temper atures, doo rs
should be s tored pro per ly in a dry building at nor mal room temperatures fo r at least 72
hours before hanging.
Handle with clean hands or gloves and do not drag doo rs ac ross other surfaces.
PR EPA RA TION
Do ors should acclimate to the environment where they will be installed for a minimum
of 48 ho urs under normal room temperatures co nditions ( 72 H ours in extr eme w eather
conditions). Avoid finish ing immediately after a rain or damp weath er and during
perio ds of higher than average humidity. In very dry co nditions, the doo r sh ould be
finished right after the w rapping is removed. Ensure adequate air flow around all
surfaces of the door when condit ioning. F ollow the paint/stain manufacturers
inst ructions noting both t emperature and humidity recommendations. Remo ve all
hardw are before finish ing.
PR E- PR I ME D D O OR S
Ligh t sanding of pre-primed doors prio r to painting is recommended. If primer has been
removed or damaged from any part of t he door during shipping or handling, lightly sand
and re-prime t he exposed areas. Follow the primer manufacturers instruc tio ns for
applic ation. If additio nal primer is us ed, ensure the primer meet s the desired finish ed
door result s. Ensu re the primer is compatible w ith both th e paint and primed doo r.
PR IME R
Molded panel doors and wh ite flush doors are primed. If primer has been removed or
damaged fro m any part of the do or dur ing sh ipping or h andling, remove handling marks
by lightly sanding before r e- priming all areas w here it is removed. If additional primer
is used ens ure the paint meets the desired finish ed door results. F ollow the primer
manufac turers instruct io ns for application. Ensure th e primer is c ompatibl e with bo th
the paint and primed door.
U N P R I M ED D OO R S
Fill any holes and blemish es with col or matching woo d filler. All doors will require a light
sanding to ensure a uniform finish . Remove handling marks by ligh tly s anding before
applying finish. Surface should be cl ean and dry, fr ee o f all dir t, grease, glue, stains and
machine marks.
PA IN T
Recommended: a high-qual ity semi-glo ss, w ater-based or oil- based paint. Consult with
your topco at supplier for the co rrect paint to w ork with yo ur door . Fo llow the paint
manufac turers instruct io ns. A quality finish is ac hieved w ith a minimum of two coats
following th e paint manufac turers instruct io ns for dry ing t ime and application. Not
recommended: dark or h igh gloss paints. If a higher quality finish is prefer red additional
coats and sanding will be required fo llowing the c oating manufacturers instruc tions.
STA I N
Recommended: a high-qual ity water -based or oil-based stain. Follow th e paint or stain
manufac turers instruct io ns. Do not thin stain w it h water or other chemicals. If humidit y
is high or difficult t o co ntrol, high quality oil stain is r ecommended. It is recommended
to test s tains and paint o n wood doors to ensure an acc ept able finish. Finish ed doors
must be allowed time to dry in acc ordanc e with the paint or stain manufac turers
recommendations.
