Caring for your Voyager
Clean the Voyager with a soft, moist cloth only – do not use solvents or abrasive detergents.
The finish of the wood trim can be cleaned with a guitar polish, or a fine furniture polish. Heed the
safety warnings at the beginning of the manual. Don’t drop the unit. If shipping your Voyager, we
recommend the original shipping carton, or an ATA approved Road Case. Shipping the Voyager
in a non-ATA or packaging other than the original carton will void the warranty.
Your Voyager Rack Mount features a gorgeous blue backlit panel legend. It’s ideal for seeing what
you’re doing on stage, or setting the mood in the studio. The light itself is emitted by a special overlay
to the metal chassis that when powered, glows blue. This is then covered by the front panel legend,
so it is well protected from wear and tear. The blue lamps used to light up the panel have a half life
of approximately 4000 Hours at full intensity – this means that the lamp will be half as bright after
4000 hours of use if used at full intensity. The lamp can be conserved greatly by using the brightness
control provided to the right of the keyboard. By running the lamp at half intensity, the useful life of the
lamps may easily extend beyond 10,000 hours. When full counter-clockwise, the lamp is turned off.
We recommend turning the lamp off when the Voyager is powered up in conditions where it is not
necessary to use the blue lamps to see what you are doing, or when the Voyager is powered, but not
used. We also recommend that the lamps are not run at full brightness, as this will increase the life of
the lamps. With proper conservation, you can expect your lamps to last for many years. Moog Music
will be stocking replacement lamps – which can be installed at the factory. A note about safety:
Do not operate your Voyager if the Front Panel Overlay is gouged, or torn, especially if there
is a puncture through the lamps themselves. Do not attempt to remove the Overlays. If any
malfunction occurs, contact Moog Music. There are no user serviceable parts in the Voyager. Do
not open the chassis!
Additional Considerations for the Blue Backlight
The Voyager’s electroluminescent panel lamps are powered by an alternating voltage. When the
lamp is illuminated, it emits an extremely small amount of acoustic energy (sound) at the frequency
of the alternating voltage. The power source also emits an extremely small amount of sound. In
normal studio use, the actual sound given off is inaudible, or barely audible. This is a property of all
electroluminescent panel lamps.
Some studio equipment may pick up and amplify a tiny amount of energy from the Voyager’s EL
lamp circuit. Should you observe this, you should reposition the equipment so it is farther away from the
Voyager. In particular, you should avoid placing sensitive equipment within 50-60 cm of the Voyager’s
left side. You should also route audio connecting cables away from the Voyager’s left side and front
panel. In some cases, you may find it advantageous to use audio cables with better shielding, or to
plug Voyager’s power cord into a different circuit.
Other maintenance of the Voyager should be referred to qualified service personnel. There are
no user serviceable parts inside the chassis.
