Te c h n i c a l D o c u m e n t a t i o n Using a TriStar MPPT for Bridged Communication on a Morningstar EIA-485 Network Abstract: This document provides details regarding configura on of the TriStar-MPPT-60, along with addi onal Morningstar devices, for bridged MODBUS/TCP communica on on an EIA-485 network.
IntroducƟon Introduced by the Electronic Industries Alliance (EIA) in 1983, EIA-485 is an alterna ve to RS-232 point to point serial communica on. EIA-458’s 2 wire, half-duplex communica on u lizes differen al signaling, suppor ng mul ple devices on a signal bus up to 1200m(4000 ) in length. Along with the use of twisted-pair wiring, EIA485’s Differen al signaling results in a communica on op on less suscep ble to external “noise” and interference, making it ideal for commercial and industrial applica ons.

Note the use of DC to DC Converter MS View Set-up To take advantage of the TS-MPPT -60’s TCP/MODBUS Bridging capability, all controllers must be properly configured. Setup of the TS-MPPT is accomplished with the use of the MS View TriStar MPPT Set Up Wizard. To access the set up wizard, connect to the TS-MPPT using MS View.
Note: Only one controller may be configured to Bridge Modbus/TCP on the bus. Unique Modbus addressing All communica on on the Morningstar EIA-485 network is accomplished via MODBUS protocol and, as a result, all controllers must have a unique Modbus ID/address. Therefore, each controller’s MODBUS ID must be configured prior beginning bridged communica on. This is also accomplished with the use of our MS VIEW so ware.
Note: The Morningstar Relay Driver has a default Modbus ID of 9. ConnecƟng to Remaining Controllers Bridged communica on on the 485 network requires both physical and so ware connec ons be made with each controller manually. The sequence in which these connec ons are made does play a role in ensuring reliable communica on. Begin by removing all power from the bus and controllers.
TerminaƟon Resistors Smaller networks typically do not require termina on. However, larger, high speed networks require proper termina on to ensure reliable Master/Slave communica on. EIA 485 networks, due to poten ally long distance, high frequency communica on, are suscep ble to signal reflec ons on the transmission line. These reflec ons are the result of differences in the characteris c impedance of the transmission line and the node.
