Overview of Topics While the user guide briefly covers the most popular phone features, this reference guide describes all of the phone’s menu features in detail. Refer to the user guide for general information about using the phone.

Feature Overview This chapter provides an overview of the features described in each chapter, followed by a menu map with the layout of features on your phone. The order of the chapters reflects the order of the features on the menu map. You or your service provider may have modified the menu structure or changed some feature names. Not all features may be available for all users.

Sending and Receiving Calls Turning Your Phone On Do This 1 Open your phone To expose the keypad 2 Press and hold P (the power key) turn on your phone Power key 3 Enter your four-digit unlock code and press OK (+) unlock your phone, if necessary The unlock code is originally set to 1234. (For more information, see “Locking and Unlocking Your Phone” on page 79.) Sending a Call To call a number, your phone must be turned on, be unlocked, and have a network connection with adequate signal strength.
Sending and Receiving Calls Ending a Call Press O (end key) To end the call Receiving a Call To receive a call, your phone must be turned on and have a network connection with adequate signal strength. If your phone is locked, you must unlock the phone to answer the call. When you receive a call, your phone rings and/or vibrates and displays an incoming call message.
Sending and Receiving Calls When the call goes through, your phone rings or vibrates once, displays Redial Successful, and then connects the call automatically. You must activate automatic redial in order to use the feature. See “Setting Automatic Redial” on page 85. Caller ID The calling line identification (caller ID) feature lets you see who is calling before you answer. • If the caller’s name is stored in your phonebook, the phone automatically displays the name.
Sending and Receiving Calls Entering Numbers in the Notepad Your phone stores the most recent string of digits entered on the keypad in a temporary memory location called the notepad. These digits can be the last phone number that you called, or a phone number that you simply entered but did not call. These digits remain in the notepad even when you turn off the phone.
Sending and Receiving Calls Dialing with One-Touch Dial You can call phonebook entries 2 through 9 with the push of a single key. Just press and hold the one-digit speed dial number for one second. It is recommended that you reserve location 1 in the phonebook for storing your voicemail number. In many cases, your service provider has already stored your voicemail number in location 1.
Sending and Receiving Calls Inserting a Pause, Wait, or ‘n’ Character You can use your phone to make calling card or credit card calls, or to retrieve messages from an answering machine. These types of calls typically require that you dial and send additional digits when prompted. To simplify the process, you can insert the following special characters when dialing.

Sending and Receiving Calls Dialing a Number from a Recent Call You can view or call a number from a call you recently dialed or received. Note: If your phone displays a Missed Calls message and you just want to dial the call you missed, see “Returning an Unanswered Call” on page 15. Tip: To attach another number, repeat the procedure from step 2. 9 N call the number Adding Digits You can add digits (for example, a PIN or credit card number) to the end of a number stored in your phonebook or the recent calls list, and then place a call to the number.
Using Features While On a Call You can use many of your phone’s features during a phone call. You can also set up features in advance to determine how your phone works during a call. Using Call Waiting If you subscribe to call waiting, an alert tone sounds while you are on a call to indicate that you have received a second call.
Using Features While On a Call Muting a Call During a call, you can turn off (or mute) your phone’s microphone to prevent the other party from hearing you: Press 1 Press MUTE (+) (if available) To mute the call or Press M > Mute 2 UNMUTE (+) turn the microphone back on Using a Speakerphone (Hands-Free Mode) You can switch your phone to communicate through a hands-free device, if one is attached.
Using Features While On a Call Sending or Receiving a Data or Fax Call During a data call, your phone sends all new messages and calls to the machine connected to your phone. During a fax call, your phone queues all new messages and calls until the fax call is completed. For information about sending and receiving data or fax calls, see “Data and Fax Calls” on page 72.
Recent Calls You can use the recent calls menu to view received calls or dialed calls, retrieve the last number stored in the notepad, and view or reset call times. Viewing the Received Calls or Dialed Calls List Your phone keeps lists of the numbers from calls you recently received and dialed, even if the calls did not connect. The lists are sorted from newest to oldest entries. The oldest entries are deleted as new ones are added.
Recent Calls The Last Calls Menu includes the following options: Option Store Description Create a phonebook entry with the selected number in the No. field. (This option is not available if STORE appears above the + key, or if the number is already stored as a phonebook entry.) Delete Delete the entry. (This option is not available if DELETE appears above the key.) Delete All Delete all entries in the current list. Send Message Create a new text message, with the selected number in the Tel No.
Recent Calls Call Times Your phone tracks and records call times. Use the recent calls menu to view and reset a call timer. Network connection time is the elapsed time from the moment you connect to your service provider's network to the moment you end the call by pressing O. This time includes busy signals and ringing. The amount of network connection time you track on your resettable timer may not equal the amount of time for which you are billed by your service provider.
Phonebook You can store a list of names and phone numbers in your phone’s electronic phonebook. Your phone can store as many as 400 entries. You can view these entries and call them directly from your phone. To see the list of names stored in your phonebook, press M > Phonebook from the idle display. Scroll to a name and press VIEW (+) to view details of the phonebook entry as shown in the following display.

Phonebook Tip: Make your voice recording in a quiet location. Hold the phone about four inches (10 centimeters) from your mouth, and speak directly into the phone’s microphone in a normal tone of voice.
Phonebook Press 1 S To scroll to the entry you want to call 2 N send the call Voice Dial To call a number using voice dial: Do This Press and release the voice key on the right side of your phone and say the entry’s name (in two seconds). Result Your phone goes to the entry in the phonebook list, plays back the voice name stored with the phonebook entry, waits two seconds, then automatically dials the call.
Phonebook Checking Phonebook Capacity You can check your phonebook’s capacity to see how many entries you have used and how many more are available. Your phonebook holds 400 entries. To check the phonebook capacity for your phone: Find the Feature M > Phonebook Press 1 M To open the Phonebook Menu 2 S scroll to Ph Book Capacity 3 SELECT (+) select Ph Book Capacity The phone displays the number of entries that are in use and the number that are empty.
Phonebook Troubleshooting You may encounter some errors while working with your phonebook. This section describes some common problems and their resolutions. Problem Phonebook Full If you try to store a new entry when the entire phonebook memory is full, the phone displays a Phonebook Full error before the phonebook entry details. Resolution You cannot save any more phonebook entries unless you delete some existing entries.
Datebook The datebook is a calendar that lets you schedule and organize events such as appointments and meetings. You can review your schedule of events for the week or by the day, and have the datebook play a reminder alarm for specific events. To schedule or see events: M > Datebook Find the Feature The datebook is organized by views—from the week view, to the day view, to a view of a specific event. Week View When you open the datebook, your phone displays a calendar for the week.

Datebook Set the Repeat Interval To specify that an event repeats or happens on a recurring basis: Press 1 CHANGE (+) To select Repeat 2 S scroll to a repeat setting You can set the event to repeat at the following intervals: None, Daily, Weekly, Monthly on day (for example, the second Tuesday of each month), Monthly on date (for example, the 15th of every month), or Yearly.

Datebook Change the Storage Duration To set or change the length of time events are stored in the phone: Find the Feature M > Datebook M > Setup > Delete After Press 1 S To scroll to the setting you want 2 SELECT (+) store the setting Viewing and Dismissing an Event Reminder When you set an alarm for an event, the phone displays or sounds an event reminder. To view or dismiss an event reminder: Press 1 VIEW (+) To view the event Press S to scroll through the event details.
Quick Dial Your service provider may program one or more quick dial numbers into your phone. These easy-to-dial numbers usually include the customer service number. Your service provider may call this feature another name, and may charge for these calls. Dialing a Quick Dial Number Find the Feature M > Quick Dial If the phone displays No Quick Dial Number Stored, see “Storing a Quick Dial Number,” below.
Radio You can use your phone to tune, store presets, and listen to FM radio stations when the optional Motorola Original™ FM Stereo Radio Headset accessory is plugged into the phone’s accessory connector port.
Radio Selecting a Preset To select a preset radio station: Press a number key (1 to 9) To tune the station stored at that preset location Sending and Receiving Calls with the Radio On Your phone interrupts the radio signal and rings or vibrates as usual to notify you of an incoming call, message, or other event.
Messages—Voicemail You can listen to your voicemail messages by calling your network voicemail phone number. Voicemail messages are stored on the network—not on your phone. Contact your service provider for more details. Storing Your Voicemail Number Store your voicemail number in your phone to make it faster and easier to use voicemail. Your voicemail number is provided by your service provider.
Messages—Text Your phone can receive text messages which may include text and phone numbers. Your phone stores these messages in a text inbox. Using Text Messages Text messages are brief messages that you can send and receive (such as Where are we meeting?). Received messages appear on your phone display or in your text message inbox. The number of messages the inbox can hold depends on the length of the messages, and the number of other messages and drafts stored in your phone.

Messages—Text Read, Send, or Delete a Draft Text Message You can save unsent messages to your drafts folder. See “Send or Save a New Text Message” on page 49. Messages—Text The Outbox Menu includes the following options: Option Re-send Description Attempt to resend the message Delete Delete the message or all messages in the outbox or Press YES (-) to confirm the deletion Delete All New Open a new text message Setup Open the outbox setup menu Set Up Outbox Text Message Cleanup In your text message outbox, you can set cleanup preferences that tell your phone how long to wait or how many messages to keep before it starts deleting the oldest messages.
Messages—Text View Browser Alert Messages To view your browser alert messages at any time: M > Messages > Browser Alerts Find the Feature Your phone launches the browser and displays a list of the browser alert messages you have received.
Messages—Text Your phone runs these cleanup checks at midnight, but you can run these checks manually at any time using this procedure: Find the Feature M > Messages M > Cleanup All Press YES (-) To confirm the cleanup Troubleshooting You may encounter errors when working with your messages. This section describes some common errors and their resolutions. Problem Cannot Delete a Locked Message Resolution You must unlock the message before you delete it. You cannot delete a locked message.
Shortcuts Your phone includes several pre-programmed shortcuts. You can create additional shortcuts, if you like, to mark frequently used menu items. Standard Shortcuts The following shortcuts are pre-programmed in your phone. You cannot edit or delete these shortcuts.

Shortcuts Shortcut Setup Errors You may see one of the following types of error messages when you set up a shortcut. Invalid Shortcut If you try to set up a shortcut to an item that cannot be marked, your phone displays Shortcut not allowed for this item. See “User-Settable Shortcuts” on page 55.
Shortcuts Similar Voice Shortcut When you record a voice shortcut, your phone compares it to other voice shortcuts. If it is similar to another one, your phone might confuse the two. The phone displays Similar Voice S-Cut Stored. Try Again. Try the voice shortcut again, but with a different recording. Using Shortcuts You can use a shortcut any time, whether you are on a call or scrolling through a menu.
Shortcuts Voice Shortcut Errors You may see one of the following errors when you try to use a voice shortcut. No Voice Shortcuts Stored If you press M and the voice key but your phone has no voice shortcuts stored, the phone displays No Voice Shortcuts Are Stored. Press SHORTCT (+) to go to the shortcut list, or press BACK (-) to go back to the previous display. Voice Shortcut Not Recognized If you use a voice shortcut and your phone does not find a match, the phone displays Repeat Shortcut.
Shortcuts Reordering Shortcuts Once you create some shortcuts, you can change the order in which they are listed. Note: The shortcut list is sorted by key. If you change a shortcut’s place in the list, you change its key.

Voice Notes The voice note feature lets you record personal messages or phone calls. You can play back a voice note at any time. There are no pre-recorded voice notes on your phone. Recording a Voice Note Your phone can store a total of two minutes of voice note recordings. (That is, the combined recording time of all voice notes cannot exceed two minutes.) Use this procedure to record a voice note when the idle display is visible, or use it during a phone call to record the call.
Voice Notes Viewing the Voice Notes List The voice notes list shows all your voice notes along with other important information and features. Voice Notes Locking and Unlocking a Voice Note You can prevent a voice note from being accidentally deleted by locking it. To delete a locked voice note, you must first unlock it. Find the Feature M > Voice Notes Press 1 S To scroll to the voice note you want to lock or unlock 2 M open the Voice Notes Menu 3 S scroll to Lock or UnLock 4 SELECT (+) lock or unlock the voice note You can also lock or unlock a voice note while playing it back.

Micro-Browser The micro-browser lets you access Web pages and on your phone. Contact your service provider to set up access, if necessary. Starting a Micro-Browser Session To open the micro-browser: Find the Feature M > Browser The micro-browser displays the home page set up by your service provider.
Ring and Vibrate Features Your phone rings or vibrates to notify you of an incoming call, message, or other event. This ring or vibration is called an alert. You can use a standard alert for all events, or set different alert types for different events.
Ring and Vibrate Features Selecting a Reminder Reminders are alerts that ring or vibrate to notify you about a voicemail or text message that you have received, or a datebook event that you have scheduled. See “Set the Alarm” on page 39, and “Viewing and Dismissing an Event Reminder” on page 42.
Phone Status The phone status menu lets you view your phone number, battery meter, and other phone status information. Displaying Your Phone Number Find the Feature M > Settings > Phone Status > My Tel. Number The phone displays your phone number. Shortcut: Press M # to see your phone number. Changing the Phone Number Display You can view and change the way your phone number is displayed at any time. 70 Find the Feature M > Settings > Phone Status > My Tel.
Phone Status Displaying the Battery Charge Level The battery meter on your phone display provides basic information about the battery charge level. A more detailed display is provided with the phone status battery meter. M > Settings > Phone Status > Battery Meter Find the Feature The phone displays the battery meter. The more shaded segments, the greater the charge.
Data and Fax Calls A Motorola Original™ data kit lets you transfer data between your phone and a computer or other external device. You can: • synchronize data between your phone and an external device with TrueSync® software, a Motorola accessory product. See the TrueSync user guide for more information. • use your phone as a wireless modem to connect to the Internet • use your phone to send and receive data and fax calls on your computer or hand-held device.
Data and Fax Calls Attaching a Serial Cable Use the interchangeable head on the Motorola Multi-Connect Serial Cable to connect a computer, Palm III device, or Palm V device to your phone. Do This 1 Plug the serial cable into the detachable head. Make sure that the Motorola logo on the detachable head and the metal shielding on the serial cable plug are both facing you. 2 With the Motorola logo and the phone both facing you, plug the detachable head into your phone’s accessory connector port.
Data and Fax Calls Sending a Data or Fax Call You can connect your phone to a computer or hand-held device to send data or a fax from the connected device. Use this feature to transfer data from your computer onto another device, and to synchronize phonebook and datebook information between your phone, computer, and/or hand-held device.
Data and Fax Calls Note: You cannot answer incoming voice calls when your phone is in data or fax mode. Any voice calls you receive are treated as unanswered calls. You must reset your phone to voice mode to return these calls. See “Reset Normal Voice Operation” on page 75 and “Returning an Unanswered Call” on page 15. Transfer the Data or Fax Your phone notifies you when the data or fax call arrives, and transfers the call to the connected device.
In-Call Setup Use the in-call setup menu to set the features that are active during a call, such as the in-call timer and call answering options.
In-Call Setup Setting Answer Options You can set up your phone to answer a call when you press any key (Multi-key) or when you open the flip (Open to Answer).
Security Assigning a New Code or Password Your phone’s four-digit unlock code is originally set to 1234, and the six-digit security code is originally set to 000000 at the factory. Your service provider may reset these numbers before you receive your phone. If your service provider has not reset these numbers, we recommend that you change them to prevent other users from accessing your personal information or modifying your phone settings.
Security If You Forget a Code or Password If you forget your security code (originally set to 000000), contact your service provider. If you forget your unlock code, try entering 1234 or the last four digits of your phone number.

If necessary, see “If You Forget a Code or Password” on page 79. 2 OK (+) unlock your phone Locking and Unlocking Your Keypad You can lock your phone keypad to prevent accidental use.
Security Press 5 CHANGE (+) To change the Allow setting 6 S scroll to All, None, or Phonebook 7 SELECT (+) select the calls you want to allow Tip: The phonebook application is not locked when you restrict calls to numbers stored in the phonebook. To prevent a user from adding (and then calling) a new phonebook entry, you may want to lock the phonebook application under these circumstances. See “Locking and Unlocking Applications” on page 81.
Personalized Settings User-settable phone options are set to their default values when you receive your phone. You can use the default settings or adjust phone features to your own preference. Changing the Wake-up Greeting When you turn on your phone, it greets you with a text message. You can personalize this wake-up greeting to say whatever you like.
Personalized Settings Changing the Quick Dial Number Your service provider may program one or more quick dial numbers (such as a customer service number) into your phone. The service provider can either block user access or allow you to edit the quick dial number.
Initial Setup This chapter covers the phone settings that you may want to change as soon as you begin using your phone. These settings help you get started quickly and easily.

Initial Setup Find the Feature M > Settings > Other Settings > Initial Setup > Auto PIN Dial Press 1 CHANGE (+) To change the current auto PIN dial setting 2 S toggle the auto PIN dial feature to On 3 SELECT (+) select the auto PIN dial setting The phone displays the PIN entry prompt. 4 keypad keys enter your PIN 5 DONE (-) confirm the setting and PIN number The phone briefly displays the Changed: Auto PIN Dial On message, and returns you to the Initial Setup menu.
Initial Setup Adjusting the Status Light A status light at the top of your phone provides information about your current phone service, and indicates incoming calls and messages. You can turn off the status light to conserve battery power.
Initial Setup Turning Animation On and Off Animation provides smooth scrolling within and between text fields, and it highlights menu selections and soft key choices. When animation is turned off, the cursor jumps from field to field, rather than moving between them. Some items do not flash. You can turn off animation to conserve battery life.
Initial Setup Resetting All Options Use the master reset feature to reset all user-selectable options, except for the unlock code and security code, back to their original factory settings. Find the Feature M > Settings > Other Settings > Initial Setup > Master Reset Press 1 keypad keys To enter your security code 2 OK (+) send your security code The phone displays the Reset All Phone Settings? message.
Network Services Your service provider has registered your phone to its network. In some situations, such as using the phone as a wireless modem or connecting it to a TTY device, you may need to change the network registration.
Network Services The Type setting lets you specify the type of network search that your phone performs: Setting Home Only Scans for networks matching the Home SID Scan A that are type A systems only Scan B that are type B systems only Automatic automatically based on priority Adjusting Service Tones Service tones cause the phone to beep each time the network registration status changes.
Hands-Free Use You can purchase an optional Motorola Original™ hands-free car kit or headset for your phone. These accessories provide alternative ways for you to use your phone without using your hands. Note: The use of wireless devices and their accessories may be prohibited or restricted in certain areas. Always obey the laws and regulations on the use of these products.
Hands-Free Use Power-Off Delay When your phone is connected to a car kit, you can set it to stay on for a specified time period after you switch off the ignition. This keeps your phone from draining your car battery by staying on indefinitely, but leaves your phone on long enough that you do not have to reenter your unlock code when you make short stops.
Glossary A AC adapter An accessory device that allows you to power your phone and charge any attached batteries from a wall outlet. accessory connector port A socket on the bottom of the phone where you can attach accessories such as an AC adapter, battery charger, vehicle power adapter, or optional accessories. add digits You add digits to the end of a number. See also: attach number. air-time The amount of time you spend using a wireless system.
Glossary Bluetooth A technology that lets your phone communicate with other electronic devices without using wires. block cursor A box that indicates the current highlighted character in a text message. After two seconds, the block cursor reverts to a flashing cursor and moves to the next position. See also: flashing cursor. browser See: micro-browser. C call back number A phone number in a text message, provided by the sender.
Glossary D datebook An application that stores and provides simple event information and notification. It can display event details, or event lists for a week or a day. dialed calls The list of the numbers that you called most recently. dialed calls timer The total amount of time you spent on all dialed calls since the last time you reset this timer. Also see timer. dialog A phone display that asks you a question or asks for confirmation.
Glossary H hands-free mode A mode where your phone sends and receives sound through an external speakerphone or headset rather than its internal microphone and earpiece. It is for use in situations like driving, where you need both hands free. help (interactive services) Some network service providers offer help during interactive services. An M in the center of the lowest display line indicates when help is available. I icon One of the variety of symbols used to designate menu features and messages.
Glossary lifetime timer The total amount of time spent on all calls ever made on this phone (cannot be manually reset). See also: timer. Lithium Polymer A battery technology used in personal wireless telephones. lock Use this feature to prevent unauthorized access to your telephone. M master clear Resets all user-selectable options back to their original factory settings (except for the unlock code and security code). This also clears your resettable timers, phonebook, and recent calls lists.
Glossary O one-touch dial Lets you call phonebook entries two through nine just by entering their single-digit entry number. You assign this feature to your first nine SIM card or fixed dial list entries instead. open to answer If activated, this feature lets you answer incoming calls by opening the flip phone. Outbox Stores your most recent sent messages. You can look in the outbox to re-read messages and check their status—read, sent, sending, or failed. You can even re-send them.
Glossary R radio You can listen to FM radio stations when the optional Motorola Original™ FM radio headset accessory is plugged into the accessory connector port on your phone. Your phone turns the radio on/off, tunes stations, and stores presets. recent calls lists This includes the received calls and dialed calls lists. See also: received calls, dialed calls. received calls The list of numbers for calls that you most recently received—both calls that you answered and calls that you missed.
Glossary smart key A special key on the side of your phone used to perform intuitive functions. This key’s function changes depending on what your phone is doing. soft keys The two unmarked keys at the top of your keypad. Labels in the lower corners of the display identify the function performed by each soft key. These functions vary depending on your location in the menu system. speakerphone An external microphone and speaker for your phone. This lets you use your phone without holding it to your ear.
Glossary U unlock code A four-digit code used to access your phone once it has been locked. The factory programmed unlock code is 1234. V vehicle power adapter An accessory device that allows you to power your phone and charge any attached batteries from a car’s cigarette lighter. voice dial The feature that lets you call a phonebook entry by saying the entry’s voice name. voice name You can record a voice name for a phonebook entry.
