Unvented Natural Gas Vent Free Room Heaters
4. Wait five (5) minutes to clear out any gas. Then smell
for gas, including near the floor. If you smell gas, STOP!
Follow “B” in the safety information above. If you do not
smell gas, go to the next step.
5. Turn counterclockwise to PILOT/IGN, if knob does
not turn then slightly depress and turn. Once knob is in
PILOT/ IGN depress for five (5) seconds.
Note: The first time that the heater is operated after
connecting the gas supply, the control knob should be
depressed for about 30 seconds. This will allow air to bleed
from the gas system.
6. With control knob pressed in, push down and release
the ignition button. This will light pilot. If needed keep
pressing igniter button until pilot lights.
7. Keep control knob pressed in for (30) seconds after
lighting pilot. After 30 seconds, release control knob.
If pilot does not stay lit, refer to Troubleshooting, pages
12-13. Also, contact a qualified service person or gas
supplier for repairs.
If control knob does not pop up when released, contact
a qualified service person or gas supplier for repairs.
8. When the pilot is lit, turn the control knob
counterclockwise to desired heating level. The main
burner should light.
9. To select the desired heat level, turn the temperature
setting knob to desired comfort setting from 1 to 5.
CAUTION: Do not try to adjust heating level by using
equipment shutoff valve.
TO TURN OFF GAS TO APPLIANCE
SHUTTING OFF HEATER:
1. Turn off equipment shutoff valve.
2. Turn control knob clockwise to the OFF
position.
SHUTTING OFF BURNER ONLY (PILOT STAYS LIT)
1. Turn control knob clockwise to the PILOT/IGN
position.
THERMOSTAT CONTROL OPERATION
FOR MHVFRD20NGBT, MHVFRD20NGT, MHVFRD30NGBT,
MHVFRD30NGT:
The thermostatic control used simply turns on and off the
burner.
FOR MHVFBF20NGBT, MHVFBF20NGBT, MHVFBF30NGBT,
MHVFBF30NGBT:
The thermostatic control used modulates the flame size as
the temperature gets closer to set point, then it turns off
the burner upon reaching temperature.
The burner will cycle back on when room temperature
drops below the set temperature. The control knob can
be set to any heat level between 1 and 5. Selecting the HI
setting will cause the burner to remain on.
INSPECTING BURNER
Check pilot flame pattern and burner flame pattern often.
PILOT FLAME PATTERN
Figure 17 show a correct pilot flame pattern and also shows
an incorrect pilot flame pattern. The incorrect pilot flame
pattern is not touching thermocouple. This will cause the
thermocouple to cool. When the thermocouple cools, the
heater will shut down. If pilot flame pattern is incorrect, as
shown in Figure 17:
Turn heater off (see To Turn OFF Gas to Appliance,
page 10)
